Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
, JAMES NUITALL, OF NEV ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN IRON TIES FOR COTTON-BALES.
Specifica-tion forming part of Letters Patent No. 23,940. dialed May l0, lt).
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES N UTTALL, of the city of New Orleans, State of Louisiana, have inade a new and useful Improvement in Ties for Iron Bands for Cotton-Bales; and I hereby declare the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference lnarked thereon, making a part of this speeioation--tlie same letters being used to designate the same partskshown in the respective ligures.
Figure 1 is a side or top View. Fig. 2 is an end View. Fig. 3 is a sectional edge View.
The ends of the band to be joined are marked A and B, and the part where the attaehniient is made marked a b, as shown morepartieularly in Fig. 3, the clasp which confines the hooks in this figure being omitted purposely, so the form of the hooks, as caught in plate S, can be seen, being each separately hooked in the inortise m in the plate. The hook a is supposed to bea permanent one-that is, any Changes to be made in the length of the band, this hook is not disturbed, the elasp c being passed over plate s and hook a when the tie is being made and set down against the shoulders on the edges and at one end of plates. (See Fig. l.) Vhen the clasp is so placed, the mortise in the plate is uncovered to allow the end of the band B to be passed through the mortise, and when drawn taut, theend lapped down on the plate, thus making the hook b. The elasp, being moved over both hooks, holds them I irm. In 'compressing the bale, moving the clasp, as stated,'off hook 11 allowsthat end to be again drawn through the mortise and allow another hook', to be made, as has been stated. i
After this my description, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
clasp c, when made use ot' in confining the hooks a and b as af fastening for iron ties for Cotton-bales, when made and arranged the saine or substantially as has been set forth.
J AS. NUTTALL.
