Description

Ja n. 29,1946.
J. R. KATZMAN REMOVABLE BODY FOR HAND TRUCKS Filed SE; L
INVENTOR.
Patented Jan. 29, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE REMOVABLE BODY FOR HAND TRUCKS James R. Katzman, New York, N. Y. I Application September 22, 1944, Serial No. 555,357
2 Claims.
This invention relates to removable bodies for hand trucks and is designed more especially as an improvement upon the structure disclosed in Patent 1,548,094 issued on August 4, 1925.
It has been found in practice that it is desirable to place the center of gravity farther back on the body than hasheretofore been possible, and also to provide means whereby the load will be prevented from spilling forwardly when the body is hastily transferred from a hand truck to a floor or other supporting surface.
An object of the present invention is to attain these advantages by a new and novel means and, with these objects in view, the invention consists of certain details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the'claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a removable truck body constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged section on line 22, Figure 1, material to be transported on the body being piled thereon as indicated by broken lines.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, I designates side rails shaped to provide sill 2 and upstanding back portions 3. Angular supports or braces 4 constituting fulcrums are secured to the angle portions of the frame formed by the side rails l and the back portions 3 of the side rails are joined by members 5 securely attached to the rails. Similar members 6 are also connected to the base portions 2 of the rails, these members 5 and 6 being of any suitable material such as wood, metal or the like. In the present case there is provided a toe board 1 which is secured fixedly to the front end portions of the rails so as to form a part of the base structure. This toe board I difiers from the members 2 in that the back edge portion 8 thereof is of the same thickness as, the members 2 while the opposite edge of the toe board is of much greater thickness, as indicated at 8. Thus the top surface of the toe board is inclined downwardly and backwardly. Consequently, when a load is stacked on the removable body the inclined toe board will tend to throw the center of gravity backwardly closer to the fulcrum members formed by the supports or braces 4 with the result that the body with the load thereon can be more readily tilted forwardly or backwardly than heretofore has been possible. Furthermore, with the front portion of the load supported at a different angle from the remaining portion of the load, due to the shape of the toe board 8-, the tendency of the load to spill forwardly when the body is swung from a hand truck onto the floor, is greatly reduced.
This improvement has been found to be of a decided advantage in the manipulation of removable truck bodies of the type described.
What is claimed is:
1. A removable body for hand trucks includ-- adjoining members and up to the front edge of the body.
2. A removable body for hand trucks including a load-supporting bottom structure and an upwardly extended back structure, said structures being rigidly joined and defining an obtuse angle, and fulcrums extending backwardly from the bottom portion, said bottom structure having the top of its front end portion inclined forwardly and upwardly to the front edge of the body thereby to provide means for positioning the center of gravity of a load on the body nearer the back structure.
