"flu-and? 8 UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE. I
JOHN A. BARRETT, OF WOODSTOCK, VERMONT.
SPRINKLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,305, dated March .29, 1881.
Application filed August 23, 1680. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ARNOLD BAR- RETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodstock, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Sprinkler, of which the following is a "specification.
metal or other suitable material at an angle with the line of the stream, and so shaped as to present to the stream an edge more or less knife-like and formed by the angular sides of the blade, by which means the stream is laid open into a more or less fan-shaped sheet, and finally converted into spray by the divergent course of its particles. 1 The advantages of this peculiar form of the arm or blade are, principally, that no backward flow or general spattering of the fluid is occasioned about the orifice of the pipe or about the sprinkler, that neither the volume nor the Velocity of the stream is appreciably impeded, and that the fluid is thoroughly distributed. The arm or blade is rigidly held in position by means of a shank or stem extending backward and attached to the pipe or nozzle.
The accompanying drawings exhibit, in two figures, the sprinkler attached to an ordinary hose-nozzle.
Figure 1 represents a side view, and Fig. 2 a top View, of the same.
0 represents the nozzle.
0 represents the shank or stem of the sprinkler, by which the latter is attached to the nozzle c. I prefer to make this shank with its cross-section in the form of the letter V instead of a curve, so that it may be more securely' held on different sizes of pipes or nozzles.
(Z represents a convenient form of spring to be attached at right angles to the shank c, for the purpose of holding the same on the nozzle e. I prefer to make this spring with a bend in to make for accommodating the rim, if any, on r the end of the nozzle.
For use, the sprinkler is adjusted to the pipe or nozzle substantially as shown in the drawin gs, and the stream turned on.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is--' The sprinkler for hose-nozzles, consisting of an arm or blade formed with angular sides, and adapted to be attached to the nozzle, whereby the stream is laid open into a more or less fanshaped and diverging sheet, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN ARNOLD BARRETT.
