BOOT AND SHOE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,285, dated March 22, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

) Be it known that I, HUGH \VHITE, of Ohica-go, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification. I

This invention relates to improvements in boots and shoes for wear in rolling-mills and similar places where heat is to be guarded against. In this class of footgear it has been customary to hobnail the soles to lift the leather above contact with the heated surfaces whereon the wearer stands or walks, and also, in some instances, perforated metal plates have been applied to the tread of the soles for the like purpose. This, of course, protects the leather in some-degree; but both the nails and the plates become so heated after exposure for a short time that they transmit the heat to the leather, and the latter in time becomes as effectually ruined as itwould have been had it been allowed to rest directly upon the floor or heated surfaces. Sometimes, also,the tread of the soles has been guarded by under-soles of wood; but such under-soles are stiff and also sensitive to the injurious action of heat.

My invention is designed to obviate the objections to these and similar kinds of soles; and it consists in constructing the shoe with an under covering ofasbestus, secured in'place and protected against abrasive wear by hobnails, substantially as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein Figure lis a side view, Fig. 2 a bottom view, and Fig. 3 a section upon the line 00 3 of Fig. 2, of my invention, like letters indicate like parts wherever used.

mit the sole to bend, and is also a material not 5 injuriously affected by heat and a non-conductor thereof. Asstated,this asbestus should preferably cover the entire under surface of the sole, but it may not be employed under the shank, nor under the heel. I recommend 0 its use, however, under the whole shoe, as thereby the entire sole is protected from the heat radiated from the door.

In order that the asbestus may not receive wear, and to securely fasten it to the boot, I stud the entire bottom, or so much thereof as is covered by the asbestus, with hobnails G and C, which pass through it into the leather of the sole Of these hobnails those marked 0 are placed around the edges, and are provided upon one side with an upwardly'projecting ear, 0, which is made to hugth'e edges of the asbestus and leather, as indicated in the drawings, thereby protecting such edge from contact with exterior objects and preventing injury to it. If the boot is to be worn in the wet, the asbestus is preferably coated with some water-proof material which isnot readily inflammable and will retain its water-turning quality under the action of such heat as the boot will be subjected to in ordinary use.

By my method of manufacture the heads of the nails do not come in contact with the leather, and the latter receives only a small fraction of the heat through their points and 7 the ears of those at the sides, which is a great advantage over the old construction.

I claim- I The boot or shoe, for use in rolling-mills or similar places, provided with an under covering of asbestus secured in place and protected from abrasive wear by hobnails, as shown and described.
