UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD HUBER, OF MARION, OHIO.
STEAM-ENGINE GOVERNOR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 239,252, dated March 22, 18811.
Application filed December 21. 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD HUBER, of Marion, in the county of Marion, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Engine Governors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and" to the letters of reference marked thereon, inaking a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in steam-engine governors; and it has for its object to provide a governor which may be attached directly to the hub of a disk or wheel of the main shaft of the engine, and suitable mechanism in connection therewith Whereby the throw of the eccentric may be varied correspondingly to the speed of the engine, and regulate the throw of the slide-valve This object I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of myimproved governor, showing the parts complete. Fig. 2 represents asectional View through the disk and eccentric, and Fig. 3 represents a detached View of the curved bearin gs against which the gibs work.
The letter A indicates the disk, mounted on the shaft of an ordinary engine, which disk carries the mechanism of my improved governor.
The letter 0 indicates a guide or way extending diametrically across the face of the disk, inwhich are adapted to reciprocate the sliding blocks D, secured to the eccentric E.
The letter F indicates two angle-levers, secured to the studs at diametrically opposite points on the face of the disk, the longer arms being provided with governor-weightsB, the short arms being connected by links G with the projections H on the sides of the collar I, which is loosely mounted on the hubof the disk A, mounted on the main shaft of them- (Model) gine. The said projections on the collar are to their seats by means of the arms II on the collar V, secured to the shaft W. The curved bearings are formed one nearer the center of the eccentric than the other, so that when the collar is shipped by the operation of the governor-weight the eccentricity of the eccentric will be changed so as to vary the throw of the eccentric and the valve which it operates according to the speed of the engine, and thus govern the admission of steam to the cylinder. The projecting arms can be used without gibs, and when thus constructed they must be made longer than when the gibs are used.
I do not claim, broadly, a governor consisting of a disk with levers pivoted thereto and provided with governor-weights, as Iarn aware that such is old.
Having thus described my invention, what I I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat cut, is
In combination with the main shaft of an engine, the disk as described, the levers pivoted thereto and provided with governor- Weights, the collar secured to the hub which connects the lever with said collar, and said hub provided with friction-arms having gibs, the eccentric operated by said friction-arms, and the arms for confining the gibs to their seats, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of November, 1880.
. EDWARD HUBER. Witnesses:
