UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST RESOIN SKI, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
LA P- MAT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 239,193, dated March 22, 1881. Application filed February 16, 1881. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
vBe it known that I, AUGUST REsciNsKI, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lap-Mats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in mats to be used while holding infants and in beds where infants'sleep; and it consists in a flat open-mouthed bag, which is to be placed inside of a suitable covering of any desired description, so as to catch the urine from the infant, and thus prevent the clothing of persons andthebed-clothin gfrombecomingsoiled, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to form a mat of such a shape that it can be always conveniently placed under a young child, whether it is in its bed or in the lap of a person, and which bag will always catch the urine from the child under any circumstances.
Figure l is a plan view of my invention incased in a suitable covering. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the bag wit-bout any covering placed over it. a
A represents a bag, which is to be made of rubber or any suitable material which will hold water. This bag is made from a single sheet of material which has its corners cut away, and then the ends and edges are turned over upon the same side and sewed or cemented together. This bag is always open upon its top when left free, and the turned-over ends and edges will rise upward sufficiently far to allow the bag to hold a considerable quantity of water without spilling it under any circumstances. This bag is preferably to be inclosed in a suitable ornamentalnetting of any desired construction or design, and which will hide its real character from general observation. This netting does not in any way interfere with the open mouth of the bag, so that when a child is lying upon it, whether in a persons lap or in its bed, any urine which may run from the child will be caught in this bag and held until intentionally emptied out.
A device such as is above described eftectw ally serves to prevent a persons clothing from being soiled while holding the child, and also prevents the mattress and clothing of the bed in which the child sleeps from becoming soiled and injured, as is always the case when a mere blanket or other material is placed underit.
In order to preventthe weight of the child from entirely closing the mouth of the bag while lying upon it, small projecting ends B are left projecting from the turned-over edges, and then these small projecting ends are bent inward and fastened to the inside of thecloth. These turned-in ends serve to keep the edges of the bag from closing tightly down on they bottom of the bag, and thus there are always left small spaces around each edge, so that the water can run down into the edges of the bag. Were these small projecting ends not used, the slightest weight would serve to close the edges of the bag, so as to make it practically of but little use.
Having thus described claim- 1. A flat open-mouthed bag, made of any suitable water-proof material, to be used in connection with small children.
2. The combination of a flat open-mouthed bag made of waterproof material, with a suitable netting or covering forincasing the bag, substantially as set forth.
3. The bag A, having an open mouth and provided with the turned-in ends B, substantially as set forth.
my invention, I
In testimony whereof I attiz; my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST RESOINSKI.
