Description

(No Model.) Q 1 0. P. NORRIS.
I Gar Ventilator. No. 239,188. Patented March 22,1881.
NFETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. NORRIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CAR-VENTI LATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,188, dated March 22, 1881,
Application filed January 26, 1881. (No model.)
- T 0 all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, CHARLES F. NORRIS, of
New York, in the county of New York, and in can withoutthe admission of drafts of cold air.
or smoke or cinders from the engine, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I at tain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2 a sectional view thereof. The letter A indicates the top of the car, and B an opening therein. 0 indicates a transverse ridge, mounted on opposite ends upon the angular supports D. The said ridge, on its under side, is rabbeted, as indicated by the letter E, the rabbetsforming seats for the edges of the hinged lids F, which are pivoted in the rabbets by means of the bolts G. The said lids, When in a normal position, set against the inclined sides of the angular supports 1), and close the openingsat the opposite sides of the same. Thelids may be provided with anysuitable means by which they can be elevated and held in an elevated position. f'
.When in use on a car thelid toward the rear of the car is elevated, the other one being kept down. It is evident that the smoke or cinders from the engine cannot pass into the car while the lids are in this position, and that nevertheless a free. escape for the foulair from within the car is provided.
Having thus described my invention, what .1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s a In combination with the roof of a car, having an opening therein, the rabbeted transverse ridge, mounted on angular supports, and the hinged lids adapted to be opened or closed, substantially as specified.
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing 1 have hereunto set my hand and seal this 20th day of January, 1881.
CHARLES F. NORRIS.
