This invention relates to a rethreading tool and it is one object of the invention to provide a tool by the use of which threads of a bolt Which have become marred may be recut .and thus allow a nut to be easily screwed upon the bolt.
Another .object of .the invention is to provide a .,rethreadng tool which may be held in .a per- .sons hand and applied to a bolt for Vrecutting the thread o f the bolt.

This improved rethreadi-ng tool is preferably formed as illustrated in Figs l through 3 of the .drawing and has a body I formed of strongmetal.

This .screw has ,a .turning head I8 at its upper end and, in spaced relation to its lower end, is formed with a circumferentially .extending groove IS to receive a set screw 20 which is screwed into an opening 2| Aformed in the head ill transversely thereof and has .a reduced inner end portion .22' for engaging ,in groove 19. The adjustngserew meshes with threads .of the socket l5 and when it is turned, the block or jaw I 3 will be shifted longitudinally into or out of -position for gripping the bolt 6 and rinly holding the bolt vbetween the jaws. While it has been stated that the b olt is rmily held between the jaws, itis to be understood that the grip upon v the bolt is such that the tool may be turned about the 'bolt or the tool held in one 'hand while the bolt is turned with va pair of pliers.
As the bolt is turned, or the tool turned about the bolt, .rust or rough places are to be cut from its thread. ,in order to do so, .there .has .been provided a outter .22 vwhich is mounted in .ah opening 23 and at its vupper end is formed with a spherical head 24 rotatably engaged in a socket 25 4formed at the lower en d of a pressure-applying screw `2li. The screw 26 has'a turning head gaged in the thread ofthe bolt that'as the -tool is turned about the bolt the threads of the bolt will be cleared of rust or other obstructions.
In Figs. 4 and 5 there has been illustrated a rethreader of a modied construction. In this embodiment of the invention, the body 29 is circular and formed with an opening 30 tapered toward its lower end. A block or lower jaw 3l is removably received in the opening 30 and formed with side ilanges 32 which overlap faces of the body along the tapered lower portion of'. opening 39 and prevent the block from shifting .transversely out of the opening. At its top, the body is formed with a socket 33 having threaded walls 3 and from this socket extends an opening 34 lo- Y.
portion 4B reduced in thickness and swiveled to the upper end of the cutter by a ball and socket joint`4l. A locking nut 42 is carried by the pressure screw to hold the screw and the cutter in adjusted position and, at its upper end, the screw jis formed with a turning head 43 by means of which it may be readily turned to shift the cutter longitudinally. vIll-Iaving thus described the invention, what is l claimed is:
1. A rethreading tool comprising a body formed with an opening tapered toward its lower end and having a head at its top, a reversible diamond-shaped block inthe tapered lower portion of said body constituting a lower jaw formed with vupper and lower V-shaped recesses constituting vbolt-receiving seats `and a threaded bore between 'the seats, a screw rotatably passing through an opening in the lower end of said body and engaged in the threaded bore to `hold the block in place, said head being formed with a vertical passage and with a pocket at a side thereof, a block -constituting an upper jaw slidable vertically through said passage and having ajVV-sha'ped bolt-receiving recess at its lower end and a threaded pocket open along one side and co'nfront'ing the pocket of said head, an adjusting screw said pockets meshing" with threads of the pocket inthe upper block for shifting the `upper block vertically, said screw being formed with a circumferential groove, aset screw thread- 4'ed through a side'opening, insaid head and engaged in the groove to rotatablymount the adjusting screw, the upper block being formed with a longitudinal passage threaded from its upper end, a; thread cutter shiftabile longitudinally through said passage and protruding downwardly therefrom, and a' pressure screwjthreaded into said passage and swiveled to the upper end ofthe thread cutter.
l2; A rethreading tool comprising a body Yformed with an opening and having a head at Aits upper end formed with passage communieating 'with' the opening, a reversible lower jaw in the lower portion of the opening fmedwith upper and lower bolt-receiving seats, a block slidable vertically through said passage and constituting anrupper jaw having: va, Ybolt-receiving seatl in its lower end, said blockbeing formed with a longitudinal bore threaded from its upper end, a cutter `in said bore shiftable vertically therein and projecting downwardly from the block, a screw rthreaded into the bore from the upper end thereof and swiveled to the upper end of said cutter, and an adjusting screw rotatably mounted vertically in said head and having threaded engagement with a side portion of said block to adjust the block longitudinally when the adjusting screw is turned.
3. A rethreading tool comprising a body uformed vwith an opening and having a head at itstop formed with a vertical passage communicating with the opening, a lower jaw at the bottom of said opening reversibly mounted and having upper and lower seats, a block shiftable vertical-ly through said passage and constituting an upper jaw., means for shifting said block longitudinally and holding the block in adjusted position, said block being formed with a longitudinal passage, a cutter shiftable longitudinally in said passage of said block, and projecting from the lower end thereof, and a screw threaded into the passage of the block through the upper end thereof and having its lower end swiveled to the upper end of said cutter.

A rethreading tool comprising a body formed with an opening and having a head at its top formed with a vertical passage communicating with the opening, a lower jaw at the bottom of said opening, an upper jaw shiftable longitudinally through said passage and formed at a side with a socket open along its side and internally threaded, the head of the body being formed at one side of its passage with an opensided socket registering with the socket of the upper jaw, an adjusting screw rotatably received in the pocket of the body with a portion extending into the socket of the upper jaw and meshing with the threads thereof to shift the upper jaw longitudinally when the screw is turned, said vbody being formed witha horizontal threaded opening communicating with the open-sided socket of the body, said adjusting screw being formed with an annular groove opposite the inner end of the horizontal threaded opening, a set screw in the horizontal threaded opening having its inner end engaged in the annular groove of the adjusting screw to prevent longitudinal movement ofthe adjusting screw, and a cutter adjustably carried by said block and projecting downwardly therefrom.

A rethreading tool comprising a body formed with an opening, a lower jaw in said opening, the upper portion of said body beingv formed with a passage, an upper jaw shiftable longitudinally through said passage into and out of said opening, means for shifting said upper jaw and holding same in adjusted position, said upper jaw being formed with a longitudinal bore, a cutter shiftable longitudinally in said bore and protruding downwardly from the upper jaw,` and `a pressure-applying screw threaded into the bore through the upper end thereof and having its lower end swiveled to the upper end of said cutter.
6. A rethreading tool comprising a body formed with an opening, a lower jaw in said opening, the upper portion of said body being Vformed with a pocket, a block mounted in said pocket and formed with a longitudinal bore, a
.cutter shiftabledongitudinally in said bore and extending therefrom into said opening, and a pressure screw threaded into said bore through the upper end thereof and swiveled to the c'utter. 7. A Yrethreading tool comprising a body formed with an opening, a lower jaw in said opening, the upper portion of said body being formed with a threaded socket and with a reduced passage leading therefrom to the opening, a block over said body having a threaded shank screwed into said socket, the block being formed with a longitudinal bore registering with the reduced passage, a cutter shiftabie longitudinally through the bore of said block and through said passage and projecting into the opening oi the body, anda pressure screw threaded into said bore through the upper end thereof and swiveied to the cutter.
