This invention relates to new and useful improvements in the operation of summary card punch devices when associated with tabulators.
The object of the invention is to enable the movement of the wheels of the accumulator in the tabulator to control the movement of certain selected elements of the summary punch card device, said elements being, for example, the punch setting slides.
Generally considered, the invention, in one form, has to do with an accumulator in which the wheels move from a normal to an operative position and when this movement takes place a device is operated which places a controlling element in operative relation to certain slides of the summary punch to preferably prevent their movement.
Morev particularly the invention may be applied to a tabulator and summary punch in which the tabulator is of the type in which certain accumulators thereon are of the direct subtraction form and move from normal in either of two directions. Means are associated with the accumulator thus moved to operatively actuate certain locking elements on the summary punch so that when the accumulator moves inone direction a certain set of slides is locked out and when the accumulator moves in the other direction another set of slides is locked out.
The general mechanism of the two machines, apart from the invention, is set forth in Patent 2,354,549, to A. G. Rindfleisch, issued July 25, 1944, and entitledCard controlled mechanism, and particular reference may be had to Figs. 2 and 7 thereof.
A present preferred form which the invention may assume is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a partial cross sectional elevation of the tabulator and the associated summary punch, with the parts in normal position;

In the drawings, there is shown the combination of a tabulator and summary punch mechanism somewhat similar to the combination shown in the above mentioned Rindfleisch patent. As shown and described therein, there is a series of sectors adapted to be positioned by the tabulator and sensed by the punch setting slides 16 of the summary card punch, which slides position an interponent member H31 in selective relation to the punch setting means so as to actuate the punches I in accordance with the stepped position of the sector 65 sensed.
In this application and improvement, the rear accumulator wheels 5| (see Fig. '7 of Patent 2,354,549) are adapted to be positioned for addition or subtraction by the movement thereof through the intermediary of a link 3|6 (see Fig. 3 of the instant case) According to this improvement, this link 3|6 is provided at its upper end with a special screw or head 60, preferably attached to the link closely adjacent the righthand frame 6| of the tabulator.
A bracket plate 62 is attached to the outside of the frame 6| and supports a vertically slidable plate 63 by means of suitable pin and slot connections. This plate is provided with a slot 64 (Figs. 2 and 3 of the instant case) into which projects the screw 60 above mentioned. Since this screw is connected to the link 3l6 which controls the operation of the rear accumulator of the tabu1ator, preferably the last direct subtraction unit of the tabulator, it is obvious that it moves up and down with the corresponding movement of said accumulator. Where the accumulator is part of a direct subtraction unit, it may be moved from a normal inactive posi tion to either an adding or a, subtracting position. When the accumulator is an ordinary one it is moved from a normal inactive position only to an adding position.
When the rear accumulator is moved to the adding position, the screw 60 is moved to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, which positions the plate 63 as shown. This plate has a notch along one edge into which fits the end of a short lever pivoted at 81 on the bracket plate 62. The other end of this lever is connected to one end of a spring 82, the other end of which is connected to the bracket plate 62 at 83. This lever and spring arrangement is preferably of the dead center type, so that when the plate 63 is moved to one position, such as the down position, the spring 82 tends to hold it there, and when it is moved to the upper position from normal, the spring likewise tends tohold it there also.
The plate 63 is moved upward or downward from a normal position so that it will act as an intermediary in the action of looking out one or the other of two sets of punch slides 16 as will be later set forth in detail. To achieve this result the plate I53 is provided with an operating slide plate 84 (Fig. 7) provided with slots 85 into which extend pins 86 dependent from bent-over lugs 81 on the plate 63. A pin 81 on the lower face of the plate 84 connects with a spring 88, the other end of which is connected to one of the pins 86, thus tending to hold the plate 84 to the left in an inoperative position. It is, therefore, apparent that this slide plate 94 is moved up or down to different levels by the vertical movement of the plate 63. It is, however, to be noted that in either of the levels to which it is moved, the plate 84 must be capable of being moved horizontally to project it forward to effect certain results to be later described. This projection of the plate 84 (Fig. 2) is effected by forming an upturned finger 89 on its outer end adapted to be engaged by a roller 99 mounted on the upper end of a lever 9| pivoted at 92 on the bracket plate 62. The lower end of this lever 9I is connected to a link which is composed of two sections 93 and 94 adjustably connected by means of pin and slot connections. The link 94 is provided with a lost motion connection With arm 9I comprising a slot and spring which holds the link biased to the right a shown in Fig. 1. This link is connected at its other end to an operating arm 92' which is adapted to be operated by the front total shaft of the tabulator. The spring connection of link 94 with arm 9! permits operation of said total shaft at times without operating the roller 99.
The arm 92' (Fig. 1) is pivoted at 95 and is connected below the pivot point to link 96 which extends forward and is connected in any suitable manner to the front total shaft of the tabulaton It is suflicient to say that when this total shaft is operated to initiate the taking of a total, the
link 96 is moved to the right and this movement takes up the lost motion in link 94 and rocks the roller 99 against the finger 89 and tends to move slide plate 84 to the right from its normal retracted position,
Depending upon the level to which the plate 63 has been moved, the operating slide plate 84 is adapted to move forward and operate one or the other of two arms 97 and 98 which are both pivoted at 99 on the bracket plate 62. In its lower level position, shown in Fig. 2, the slide member 84, when moved forward by the roller 99, engages an adjacent face of the arm 91 and passes under arm 98- and moves said arm 91 around its pivot point 99. When the plate 63 is moved to its uppermost position, it positions the slide plate 84 at its upper level indicated by dot and dash, so that, when the roller 99 moves it forward, it engages the lower end of arm 98 and turns said arm around its pivot point 99. The arm 91 has a notch I 99 in its forward edge at the level in which the plate 84 moves when in its uppermost position, so that when the plate 84 is moved forward in its uppermost position, it will move only the arm 98.
There are times when it may be desired to v render the plate 84 inoperative, and to achieve this result there is provided a latch finger I9I (Figs. 4 and 5) pivoted at I92 on a portion I93 bent from the bracket plate 62. This latch finger has an ear I94 which projects through a hole in the plate 62 and is adapted to be engaged by a shoulder on a rotatable disc I95. This disc I95 is mounted on a shaft I96 provided with an operating knob I91 and is journalled in a hub I98 extending from the face of the plate 62. When the knob I9! is in one position, the disc I95 through I94 positions the latch finger I9I in front of the finger 89 on the slide plate 84 to prevent said plate from moving forward. When the knob I8! is in the other position, its shoulder engages the ear I94 and moves the same to pivot the latch finger [DI and move it out of the path of finger 89 on slide plate 84 as shown in Fig. 4, thus allowing said plate 84 to have its normal forward and backward movements. Therefore, when the plate 84 is thus latched in inoperative position by the finger I9I, the tendency of roller 99 to act on the plate 84 is made ineffective, and under these circumstances the spring connection between the link 93 and lever 9I will permit the total shaft to operate without moving the roller 99 When either arm 91 or 98 is pivoted around it axis by the operation of the slide plate 84, said arms are adapted to engage arms I99 and H9, respectively, connected to a shaft I II journalled in the bracket plate II2 which forms part of the frame II3 of a summary punch mechanism disposed normally adjacent the tabulator as shown in Fig. 1. Operated respectively by means of arms I99 and H9 are arms H4 and H5 secured to the shaft III on the other side of the bracket plate I I2 and these, in turn, are respectively connected to links H6 and I2I. These links at their upper ends are connected to arms II! and I22, which are connected to pivoted bail frames H9 and I 23 pivoted at II8 on a bracket plate I25 fastened to the frame of the summary card punch. The outer ends. of these bail frames H9 and I23 are provided with dependent locking fingers I 29 and I24 which, when the bail frames are operated, are disposed to lie in front f the sets of summary-punch-setting slides I6 so as to prevent their ordina'ry forward operative movement.
Generally contemplating the operation of the device, it will be perceived that as long as the knob I9! is in one position, the finger I9! is disposed to prevent the operative movement of the slide plate 84. However, when this knob is moved to the other position, this finger is removed and the plate 84 is in condition to be moved to actuate either of the arms I99 and III) by the roller 99 whenever the total shaft is operated- Which arm the plate 84 actuates depends upon the vertical position of the plate 63 and this, in turn, 15 determined by the position of the accumulator wheels, whether they are in adding or subtracting position. adding position, then the forward movement of plate 84 will actuate arm I09 and through this the lock finger I29, Whereas if the plate 63is in its upper or subtracting position, the slide plate 84 will actuate the arm H9 and by means of it will set the lock finger I24 to prevent operative movement of another set of punch setting slides 15.
It is obvious from the above that a device of this character has many uses. However, a specific example would be in obtaining summary If the plate 63 is in its lower or firth 01 credit or debit totals. If the direct subtraction accumulator is in the adding position,
it might be only desirable to set up debit totals in the summary punch. Therefore, the slide 84 will rock arm I09 and through arm H4 link H6 lever I" will rock the locking finger I20 into position to prevent the slides 1. associated with the credit portion of the summary card from operating. If the Slide 84 is positioned in the subtract position (dot and dash in Fig. 2) then finger no will remain raised and finger I24 will be lowered to lock out the slides associated with the debit portion of the card.
It will, of course, be apparent that the prererred form of the invention concerns the mechanism wherein the accumulators move to either 1! two positions from a normal position, but it is also to be remembered that the accumulators may move to only one position from normal. But in any event when they move from normal they eflect the looking out of at least one set of punch setting slides as above set forth. In the case of a direct subtraction tabulator, the separate movement the accumulator wheels to either merative position is adapted to control the locking out of separate sets'of punch setting slides a'sdescribed.
While the invention herein has been described in detail with respect to a present preferred form which the invention may assume, it is not to be limited to. such details and forms since many and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention in. its broadest. aspects. Hence, it is not d to limit the invention to the particular 1 forms and modifications shown herein, except as the scope of the invention may be limited by the scope of any one or more oi the appended claims.
What I claim as' new, and desire to secure by Ldzters Patent, is:

In a machine of the class described including a direct subtraction tabulator and a summary card pimch, the combination of a direct subtraction unit in the tabulator adapted to be moved from a normal to either an adding or subtracting position, a pair of selector units in the summary card punch, and means controlled by the movement of the direct subtraction unit on the tabulator from one position to another to prevent the selecting action of one or the other of the said selector units dependent upon the movement of the direct subtraction unit of the tabulator. I

In a machine of the class described including a direct subtraction tabulator and a summary card punch, the combination of a direct subtraction unit on the tabulator adapted to be moved from a normal to either an adding or subtracting position, a plurality of sets of punch setting slides on the summary card punch, and means controlled by the direct subtraction unit and associated with the sets of punch setting slides to prevent the operative movement of one set of slide when the direct subtraction unit is moved to the adding position and to prevent the operative movement of another set of slides when the direct subtraction unit is moved to the subtracting position.

In a machine of the class described including a direct subtraction tabulator and a summary card punch, the combination of a direct subtraction unit on the tabulator adapted to be moved from a normal to either an adding or subtracting position, a plurality of sets of punch setting slides on the summary card punch, a total shaft on the tabulator, an operating member positioned by the movement 01' the direct subtraction unit to one position or another, and means operated by the movement or the total shaft to actuate said operating member, locking members for the sets of punch setting slides, and means disposed between the locking members and the operating member to cause the locking action of said locking members to lock out certain of said sets of slides dependent upon the position of said operating member.

In a machine of the class described including a direct subtraction tabulator and a summary card punch, the combination of a direct subtraction unit on the tabulator adapted to be moved from a normal to'either an adding or a subtracting position, a, slidable plate associated with said subtraction unit, means on the subtraction unit to engage and move the slidable plate in accordance with the movement of the unit, an operating slide on the slidable plate, said slide positioned in accordance with the position of the subtraction unit, a total shaft on the tabulator, means connected to the total shaft and adapted to actuate the operating slide in either of its positions, a plurality of sets of punch setting slides on the summary card punch, locking members for the sets of punch setting slides, and means disposed between the locking member and the operating slide to cause the locking action of said locking members to lock out certain of said sets of slides dependent upon the position of said operating slide, said last named means being operated by said operating slide.

In a, machine of the class described including a direct subtraction tabulator and a summary card punch, the combination of a. direct subtraction unit on the tabulator adapted to be moved from a normal to either an adding or a subtracting position, a slidable plate associated with said subtraction unit, means on the subtraction unit to engage and move the slidable plate in accordance with the movement of the unit, an operating slide on the slidable plate, said slide positioned in accordance with the position of the subtraction unit, a total shaft on the tabulator, means connected to the total shaft and adapted to actuate the operating slide in either of its positions, a pair of sets of punch setting slides on the summar card punch, a locking member connected to each set of punch setting slides, a link connected to each blocking member, an oscillatable lever connected to each link, one of said levers adapted to be operated by the operating slide in one position thereof and the other lever adapted to be operated by the operating slide in another position thereof.

In a machine of the class described including a direct subtraction tabulator, the combination of a direct subtraction unit on the tabulator adapted to be moved from a normal to either an adding or a subtracting position, a total shaft on the tabulator, an operating member positioned by the movement of the direct subtraction unit to one operative position or the other, and means operated by the total shaft to actuate said operating member in either of its positions.
7, In a. machine of the class described including a direct subtraction tabulator, the combination of a direct subtraction unit on the tabulator adapted to be moved from a normal to either an adding or a subtracting position, a slidable plate associated with said subtraction unit, means on the subtraction unit, to engageiand move the slidable plate in accordance with the movement of the unit, an operating slide on the slidable plate, said slide positioned in accordance with the position of the subtraction unit, a total shaft on the tabulator, and means connected to the total shaft and adapted to actuate the operating a summary card punch and a tabulator, the com- L bination of a plurality of sets of punch setting slides on the summary card punch, pivoted bails mounted on the punch and adapted when moved to an operative position to prevent the operative movement of said sets of punch setting slides, linkage connectedto said bails, and selectively operable pivoted arms associated with and operated by the tabulator, and engageable with said linkage whereby the bails may be operated to selectively prevent movement of one or another of said sets of punch setting slides when the selectively operated arms are actuated.

In a machine of the class described including a summary card punch, the combination of a pair of sets of punch setting slides on the sum- 1 operated to selectively actuate said bails, said arms having engageable portions at difierent levels, one of said arms being cut away at the level of the engageable portion of the adjacent arm, whereby a single operating member disposed at different levels can operate one arm and not the other at its different level positions.

In a machine of the class described, a frame, a direct subtraction unit disposed adjacent .said frame, a bracket plate on said frame, a. slidand means for causing the operation of one of the pivoted arms by the operable element in one position of the slidable plate and to cause the movement of the other pivoted arm by the operable element in the other position of the slidable plate. I

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a direct subtraction unit of a tabulator and punch setting slides of a summary card punch, and means controlled by the movement of the direct subtraction unit to selectively prevent the movement of said slides when the unit moves to a predetermined position,
13. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an accumulator unit on the tabulator, and punch setting slides of a summary punch, and means controlled by the movement of the accumulator unit from a normal position to selectively prevent the movement of said slides.
14. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an accumulator unit on the tabulator, and punch setting slides of a summary punch, and means controlled by the direction of movement of the accumulator unit in one direction or another from a normal position to selectively prevent the movement of certain of said slides.
