BAG
Filed Dec. 5 194s INVENTOR I IYTTQRNQYS I Patented Sept. 25, 1945 BAG George W. Poppc, Brooklyn, N. Y., assignor to Equitable Paper Bag Co. Inc., Long Island City, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application December 3, 1943, Serial No. 512,704
1 Claim.
This invention relates to bags.
An object of this invention is a bellows-fold flat-bottom type bag which is substantially siftproof. I
A bag embodying the invention consists of a bellows-fold tube having a front wall and a back wall with one of said walls (preferably the back wall), and the bellows folds being shaped to provide a lip at the top edge of the tube and a recess at the bottom edge of the tube through which is exposed a portion of the inner face of the other wall. The lower end of the tube is folded at about a line transverse of the tube to bring the outer face of the lower end of said one wall and the exposed inner face portion of said other wall into contact with the outer face of said one wall. The folded portion of the tube is longer than the depth of the bellows fold so as to form a fiat bag bottom and extends beyond the bottom edge a short distance along said one wall. Adhesive is applied between said one wall and the foldedover tube portion beyond the bag bottom edge to interjoin them. This arrangement provides a substantially sift-proof bottom for the bag.
Bags embodying this invention can be made on standard bag-making machines with only slight adjustment of such machines. They can, therefore, be made at a much higher speed and lower cost than other bags of the sift-proof bottom typewhich, heretofore, have had to be manufactured on machines having a low production rate.
Other objects, novel features and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 illustrate a tube from which the bag is made;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the completed bag in a partially open condition, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the bag in fully open condition.
Referring to Fig. 1, the tube ID has a front wall II, a seam wall I2 and bellows fold I3. This tube is formed from a web in the well-known manner with the two edges of the web being joined together by adhesive at It to form a usual seam. The tube is formed to provide a lip I5 at the top edge of the wall I2 and bellows fold I3 and a corresponding recess at the bottom edge vwhereby a portion of the inner surface of the wall II is exposed. While the tube has been shown as of the center seam type. the tube may equally well have its seam other than central.
The bottom end of the tube is folded about a transverse line I6 more removed from the apex of the wall I2 recess than the depth of the bellows fold I3 to bring the bottom portion of the wall I2 and the exposed portion of the wall II into contact with the wall I2 to form a fiat bottom bag and adhesive is applied between the contacting walls as indicated at H. The adhesive joins the lower edges of the bellows I3 to the walls II and I2 and also joins the exposed portion of the inner surface of the wall II to the outer surface of the wall I2 as well as joins thefolded-up portion of the wall I2 to the remainder of the wall I2.-
The line I6 is so arranged that the foldedover portion of the walls II and I2 are longer than the distance from the line I6 to the edge of the bag bottom. These portions, therefore, continue around the bottom corner of the bag and part way up the side wall I2. This arrangement provides a sift-tight seam along each edge of the bottom and effectively prevents loss of contents from the bag.
I claim:
Abag consisting of a bellows fold tube having a front wall and a back wall, said bellows folds and one of said wall being formed at the top edge with lips and at the bottom edge with corresponding recesses exposing a portion of the inner surface of the remaining wall, said tube being folded at one end about a line transverse thereof more removed from the apex of said wall recess than the depth of the bellows fold into contact with said one wall to form a fiat bag bottom when the tube is open with a portion of the tube extending beyond, and adhesive applied between said one wall and that portion of said tube extending beyond the edge of the bag bottom.
GEORGE W. POPPE.
