J. HALPERT ETAL GRIP HANGER Filed May 27, 1944 INVENTORS JOHN 'HALPERT EST ELLE LAMBERT Patented Sept. 18, 1945 GRIP HANGER .1 ohn Halpert and Estelle Lambert,
Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application May 27, 1944, Serial No. 537,620
3 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful means in grip hanger.
More specifically the invention proposes the construction of a grip hanger bent entirely from the length of wire and having an extension on the end of its hook portion for gripping the hanger support rod. Present day constructions of wire garment hangers are objectionable in that the hook portions are of an insufficient length to properly support the hanger andit has been found that the application of heavy garments to these hangers causes them under the weight of garments to slip from the hanger support rod.
This invention proposes extending the end of the hook portion of the grip hanger in a manner to provide additional material on the hook portion for frictionally and otherwise gripping and maintaining the hanger in an engaged position with the hanger support rod regardless of the weight of the garment positioned on the hanger.
A modification of the invention proposes the provision of 2. turned in end of the hook portion continuing into a keeper element which is adapted to be engaged with a portion of the hook member after being engaged upon the hanger support rod. This construction causes the hook to completely encircle the support rod and prevents the accidental disengagement of the hook portion from the support rod.
Another object of the invention proposes forming the extension of the hook portion of the hanger as an attachment which is adapted to be applied to hangers in every-day use to increase the extended end of their hook portions, to insure a proper engagement with the support rod.
It is a further object of this invention to construct a grip hanger which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a garment hanger constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the grip hanger constructed in accordance with a modification of this invention.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating the open position of the hook portion.
Fig. l is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the keeper element per se.
Fig. 6 is an elevational view of a grip hanger constructed in accordance with a still further .modification of this invention.
1 Fig. 7 is a partial end elevational view looking in the direction of the line 1-4 of Fig. 6.
Fig.8 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken on the line 8-3 of Fig. 7.
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of one of the clamps used in the form of the invention shown in Fig. 6 but opened up in a manner to clearly illustrate how it is bent.
The grip hanger garment according to this invention, includes a length of wire it! which has both of its ends twisted around a section of the wire forming a vertical neck H for the hanger. Those portions of the wire disposed beneath the neck I I are shaped into a horizontal loop portion 42 forming a shoulder for the hanger.
The other end of the length of the wire to continues beyond and upwards from the vertical neck I l and is bent into a hook portion 13. This hook portion I3 is adapted to engage about the hanger support rod-(as shown on the drawing) for supporting the garment hanger.
An extension l4 continues from the hook portion l3 and is adapted to grip the hanger support rod and prevent the garment hanger from becoming accidentall disengaged therefrom. In
his first form of the invention the extension is integrally formed with the hook portion I3 and extends continuously from the end thereof.
Wire garment hangers as they are new conventionally constructed have been found objectionable in that their hook portions are not durable enough to support the hanger under the weight of heavy garments placed thereon, as a result it has been found that when such heavy garments have been placed upon these wire hangers the weight has caused the hook portion to be bent open with a result that the garment and hanger falls to the floor. The formation of this extension on the end of the hook insures a rigid grip of the support rod preventing the hook portion from becoming accidentally disengaged from the support rod regardless of the weight of the garment position on the hanger.
In the modification of the invention shown in Figs. 3 to 5 the free end of the extension I4 of the hook portion continues into the keeper element I5. This keeper element I5 is adapted to be engaged with the top end of the vertical neck portion ll of the grip hanger to maintain the hook portion I3 closed. With the hook portion closed as shown in Fig. 2 after being engaged on a support rod, it will be seen that it is impossible for the hook portion l3 to become disengaged from its support rod. The open position of the keeper element 15 is illustrated in Fig. 3.
In the modification of the invention shown in Figs. 6 to 9 the construction of the extension 20 for the hook portion [3 of the garment hanger is in the nature of the separate element adapted to be extended along the side of the hook portion l3. The element 20 is shaped to conform with a shape of the hook portion l3 and is provided at spaced points with integral clamp portions 2| which are adapted to be engaged on the hook portion i3 for securely maintaining the extension 20 in position upon the hook portion. These clamp portions 2| are bent from the material of the extension 20 and provides a means for maintaining this extension on the hook portion of wire garment hangers now in use.
In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that previously shown and like reference numerals identify like parts in each of the several views.
It is to be understood that this hanger may be made of any suitable material, such as wire, plastics, wood, etc.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of our invention, it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by United State Letters Patent is:
l. A grip hanger, comprising a length of wire having one end twisted around a, section of said wire forming a vertical neck for the hanger, the portions of said wire beneath said neck being shaped into a horizontal loop portion forming the shoulders for said hanger, the other end of said wire continuing upwards into a hook portion for the hanger, and a movable extension member on said hook portion for grippin a hanger support rod to selected angular amounts, said extension being in the form of a separate member extended along said hook portion and having clamps formed on said extension member for gripping said hook portion.
2. A grip hanger, comprising a length of wire having one end twisted around a section of said wire forming a vertical neck for the hanger, the portions .of said wire beneath said neck being shaped into a horizontal loop portion forming the shoulders for said hanger, the other end of said wire continuing upwards into a hook portion for the hanger, and a movable extension member on said hook portion for gripping a hanger support rod to selected angular amounts, said extension being in the form of a separate member extended along said hook portion and having clamps formed on said extension member for gripping said hook portion, said clamps being bent from the material of said extension member.
3. A grip hanger, comprising a length of wire having one end twisted around a section of said wire forming a vertical neck for the hanger, the portions of said wire beneath said neck being shaped into a horizontal loop portion forming the shoulders for said hanger, the other end of said wire continuing upwards into a hook portion for the hanger, and a movable extension member on said hook portion for gripping a hanger support rod to selected angular amounts, said extension being in the form of a separate member extended along said hook portion and having clamps formed on said extension member for gripping said hook portion, said clamps being bent from the material of said extension member, and partially extending around the wire forming said hook portion.
