Description

To accomplish this, an upright, suitably supported at its base, has a beam rotatably mounted thereon at its midsection and carries on each end a seat. The beam in turn has parallel uprights on opposite sides of its rotating axis. To propel the carrousel, operating levers are oscillatably mounted on the parallel uprights, whose in ner ends are forked or bifurcated to jointly straddle an offset, vertical extension on the base upright and whose outer ends are accessible to the operators on the seats whose joint effort in alternately pushing and pulling the levers exerts a corresponding force on the biiurcated ends of the levers engaging the base upright extension.
Another object of the invention is to provide a carrousel having few working parts easily asi sembled and disassembled and which, when assembled are manually operated with minimum effort but in operation, the carrousel promotes friendly cooperation among children.
With the foregoing objects as paramount, the invention has further reference to certain features of accomplishment which will become apparent as the description proceeds, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan View of the operating levers per se of a carrousel constructed according to the present invention, and
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the carrousel, as a whole.
Continuing with a more detailed description of the drawing, reference numeral I denotes a vertical spindle or base upright, rigidly mounted in a base consisting of radial members II and anguiar reinforcing braces I2 whose upper ends are affixed to the upright I0 near its upper end.
It is to be observed that the frame-work of the machine is composed chiey of jointed and threaded pipe and appropriate ttings such as tees, elbo-ws, nipples and the like. However, it is apparent that all of these may have their counterparts in cast or otherwise fabricated elements and yet serve the same purpose and produce the same results.

y f "tlie e'nd's of the se* bearing. On each end of the beam I4 is a seat i6, suitably braced by a rigid pipe assembly I'i, rising from the beam adjacent its end and lying behind the back of the seat.
On each side of the bearing I5, there is provided an upright I8. These parallel uprights are joined in rigid relationship at their upper ends by a pipe section or rod I 9. The plate 2D above the member I9 is of no particular consequence in the general construction of the machine but serves as a name plate.
On each of the uprights I8 is freely mounted an X fitting 2I, serving also as a bearing and threaded into one leg of this tting, through the medium of an elbow 22 is a pipe section 23. A hand grip 24 is formed by another section of pipe connected to the section 22 through an elbow 25, to lie generally across the seat I6 in a position accessible to a passenger seated therein.
Threaded into the opposite leg of the fitting 2I is a pipe section 26 which is extended by a second and longer section 2'I. Disposed parallel with section 2'I, by virtue of a tee 28 and an elbow 29 is a companion and coextensive pipe section 30. It is obvious that the arangement described forms a yoke or fork and the yoke or fork thus dened is disposed to embrace the offset extension I3 of the base upright I0. Since all of the elements making up the lever assembly, just described, are in rigid relationship to form virtually one piece, and in view of the fact that the lever is held against other than rotative or oscillative movement by a passenger in a seat I6, alternate forward and rearward thrusts on the portion 24 of the lever assembly tend to propel the beam I4 in a clockwise or countenclockwise direction, depending upon the will of the passengers, by virtue of the offset extension I3 of the base upright.
It is of course possible for one passenger to operate the carrousel and it is obvious that more than one passenger may 'be provided for at each end of the beam I4 but in any case, the eiiect of pushing and pulling the hand grips 24 remain in the same. l
In order to prevent injury to children riding on the device, a suitable housing may be installed over the propelling mechanism composed of the yokes and their associated elements.
Manifestly, the construction as shown and demounted on said beam on each side of its rotatingv axis, a bearing on each of said latter uprights, a yoke extending inwardly from each of said bearings and slidably embracing said offset extension and a hand grip also connected to each of said bearings and disposed in juxtapositioned relation to said seats to be operated by passengers to rotatably propel said beam.
2. A carrousel including a beam rotatable on an upright, an offset extension on said upright in parallel relation to the vertical axis thereof, a hand-grip adjacent each of said seats mounted for oscillating movement in a substantially horizontal plane, and a yoke rigid with and operated by each of said hand grips and embracing said extension for propelling said beam.
3. A carrousel including an upright having a vertically oiset extension at the top thereof, a beam rotatably mounted on said upright having seats on the ends thereof and oscillatable means adjacent said seats having slidable engagement with said extension for propelling said beam by successive thrusts on said oscillatable means.
4. A carrousel comprising a, seat carrying member mounted for rotation about a vertical support, a crank forming an extension on said support, oscillatable yokes slidably engaging said extension, and hand actuated levers in rigid relationship with said yokes to exert a driving force to said seat carrying member.
5. A merry-go-round including a seat carrying member mounted for rotation on a vertical support, oscillatable means adjacent each seat on said member, yokes rigid with said oscillatable means and oiset means on said support slidably receivable by said yokes for propelling said seat carrying member` upon movement of said oscillatable means.
