Description

4 H. A. MICHAELIS 2,383,331
WAFFLE IRON Filed Sept. 12, 1944 Inventor: Harold A. Michaelis,
' ll Z Attorney.
Patented Aug. 21, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT [OFFICE WAFFLE IRON Harold A. Michaelis, Elmhurst, Ill., assignor to Edison General Electric Appliance Company, Inc., Chicago, 11]., a corporation of New York irons and particularly to waiile irons of the type in which the two waflle plates are hinged together so that the upper plate moves vertically with reference to the lower plate.
One of the objects of my. invention is to provide means whereby the baked wafl'ie is caused to be detached from the waflie plates in case there is a tendency for the waflle to adhere to the plate when the plates are separated.
In carrying out my invention I provide the upper plate of the waille iron with a weight which is mounted on the plate and supported at a distance therefrom by a spring, the weight being attached so that it may act as a handle for lifting the upper plate. The weight and the spring are so proportioned to the mass of the top gridas to cause a vibration and rocking motion of the grid when the weight is struck a light blow as, for
will cause the waille to be detached from the grid "or grids in case there is a tendency for it to adhere. The weight 8 may also act as a handle for lifting the upper grid.
If desired, a flat spring ll may be used under the spring 9 to reenforce the latter. This spring, as shown, is mounted under the spring 5 and it also is secured to the bracket l0. 4
While I have described my invention as embodied in concrete form for purposes of illustration, it should be understood that I do not limit my invention thereto since various modifications thereof may be adapted without departing from the spirit of my invention,- the scope of which is set forth in the annexed claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by.
Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A watlle iron comprising upper and lower baking grids joined together by a lost motion instance, a glancing blow. This slight movehinge and a weight supported by the upper grid ment of the grid will cause the release of the waflle in case it tends to adhere to the grid;
Referring to the accompanying drawing in which I, have shown my invention in concrete form, Fig. 1 is a side view of the waffle iron, certain parts being broken away to show the interior structure; and Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view.
Referring to the drawing, l represents the base of the waffle iron to which is permanently attached the lower plate 2.
This waflle iron is of the electrically heated type and 3 represents the heating unit which is embedded in the metal of the plate. 4 represents the casing of the upper plate within which is secured the uper grid 5 provided with the embedded heating unit 6. The casing 4 is pivoted to the base I, as shown, through a lost motion hinge 7 so that the upper grid may have a slight vertical movement in addition to its rotary movement on the hinge. This will allow for the expansion of a waffle on baking.
A weight 8 in the form of a cylindrical bar is attached to the casing I by means of an elongated fiat spring 9 the inner end of which is mounted on the casing by means of a bracket ill. The weight and the spring are so proportioned and arranged with reference to the mass of the upper grid 5 to which they are attached as to cause a vibration of the grid when the weight is struck aglancing blow. Such a blow will cause a vibration of the weight which in turn will be transmitted to the grid. This vibration and at a distance therefrom by a spring projecting from the grid at a point opposite the hinge, said weight and spring being so proportioned with reference to the mass of the top grid as to cause a vibration and rocking motion of the grid when the weight is struck a glancing blow and thereby release the waffle in case it adheres to the grids, said weight also acting as a handle for lifting the top grid to remove the waflle.
2. A waflle iron comprising upper and lower baking grids jointed together by'a lost motion hinge, a weight, a fiat elongated spring attached to the upper grid supporting said weight at a distance therefrom, and said weight and spring being so proportioned with reference to the mass of the top grid as to cause a vibration and rocking motion of the grid when the weight is struck a glancing blow and thereby release the waflle in case it adheres to the grids.
3. A waflle iron comprising upper and lower baking grids joined together by a lost motion hinge, a weight, a fiat elongated spring attached to the upper grid supporting said weight at a distance therefrom, a second fiat spring attached to said upper grid to reenforce said first spring, said weight and springs being so proportioned with reference to the mass of the top grid as to cause a vibration and rocking motion of the grid when the weight is struck a glancing blow and thereby release the waffle in case it adheres to thegrids.
