PATENT EEIcE.
CHARLES A. BAILEY, OF COBALT, CONNECTICUT.
COFFlN-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,328, dated March 1, 1881. Application filed December 30, 1880. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BAILEY, of Cobalt, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Coffin-Handles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation of my coffin-handle. Fig. 2 is a rear view, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view.
This invention relates to coffin-handles; and it consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the hand-clasp; B, the ear for attaching the same to the cofiin. This ear consists of twohalves or portions, C D, hinged together, one of said portions being firmly secured to the hand-clasp; the other to the coffin.
The portion C, which is secured to the coffin, has its edge C formed of two half-tubes, E, terminating at their outer ends at the flange c, and at their inner ends closed by a wall, e, there being a space or recess, F, between said walls a e of the semi-tubes E,at whose inner end is located a stud, G, with a flat top, and on each side of said stud is a perforated boss,- H. The walls 6 e rise up above the curved surface 6 e of the semi-tubes E, and, extending beyond the same, have'their ends connected by a cross-bar, l, which has a perforated enlargement, h, at its middle. The perforated bosses H H and enlargement I are for the attachment of portion C to the coflin and the tops of the same and bf flange c are about on a level, so as to give a firm bearing and make a secure hold, the triple fastening preventing a wrench.
Portion D has a flange, cl, to correspond with flange c, and an extension, K, made to 5 fit in recess F between walls 6 c. This portion D has a rib, d, extending from its connection with the handclasp lengthwise through it into extension K, and terminates in a transverse swell, k, from whose top, at the middle, rises a stud, L, having a flat top, I.
M is a pivot-rod, which passes through walls 6 c and swell 7c, and holds the two portions C and D pivotally together.
The upper surface of "ib d curves downward atm, and the under side of cross-bar I is cut away at 19, so that when the two portions are straightened out the enlargement 71: rests upon the top portion, 1", and the lower part, 8, of cross-bar I upon the lower portion, t, of said rib, the curve a entering the cut-away 19, so that the cross-bar I has a firm beari n g on rib d.
When the hinge is opened the position of studL is such that cross-bar bears against flat top Z,of said stud, which takes the strain off of the hinge.
What I claim is An ear for attaching handles to coffins, consisting of one portion of said ear rigidiy secured to the hand-clasp, and having an extension provided with a swell and stud, and the other portion rigidly secured to the coflin, and having a recess to receive the extension of the other portion, and a cross-bar adapted to bear on the stud entering said recess, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
F. T. SHEPARD, JOSIAH AGKLEY.
