this instance.
In the modification shown in Figure 4, a cartridge 3I, similar 'to cartridge I6, but of thicker' material, is secured at its butt end 32 to the barrel 33 by a coupling collar 34 in the same manner as holder I4 and is equipped with an explosive chamber 35 and percussive cap 36 just.,
as in the case of cartridge I6. 'I'he front endy of the cartridge 3| has permanently Vsecured therein va anged annular holder 31 for a disc 38 of frangible material secured by a keeper ring 39 in the holder. yAs will be apparent in thisembodiment of theinvention, the outsidev holder I4 of the preferred embodiment is dispensed with and the cartridge attached directlyto the barrel for removal and replacement as a separate manufacturing unit. As will also be obvious, the disc 38 is designed to Ybe broken vunder the force of the explosion to release. the extinguishing powder, designated B, from the cartridge. The car-` tridge V3| may be capped prior to attachment in the same manner as described with reference to the cartridge I6.
The'foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention withoutfurther explanation.
a handle forming barrel of tubular form, a cylindrical cartridge extending axially from one end of said barrel, and loaded with pulverulent lire extinguishing material said cartridge having a buttv endopposed to said fend of the barrel, means in vsaid cartridge adjacent said butt end forming a rupturable explosive containing chamber, means 'to ignite explosive in said chamber from the k,exterior of said cartridge, said explosive chamber comprising an annular flange, and blow out discs ofxwadding fitting in said ange and retaining the explosive therein.
5.In`a`re extinguisher of the class described a-fhandle'forming barrel of tubular form, a cylindrical cartridge extending axially from one end of said barrel, and'loaded with pulverulent fire extinguishing lmaterial said cartridge having a butt end opposed to said end of the barrel, means in said cartridge adjacent said buttl end forming a rupturable explosive'containing chamber, means to-'ignite explosive in said chamber from the exterior of said cartridge, -saidl cartridge having al closure capfrictionally fitting on the other end thereof for detachment under the force of the explosion incident to igniting said explosive, and acylindrica'l holder forsaidcartridge detachably attached at one end' to said one end 'of said barrel and having an open opposite end, said Manifestly, the invention is susceptible-of modiiication in other respects than as herein set forth, andfright is reserved to such other modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a fire extinguisher of the class described, a tubular handle, a Icylindrical cartridge holder extending axially from one end of said handle and having an open end, a cartridge loaded rwith re extinguishing material vand ,detachably mountable in said holder s o as to protrude but slightly beyond the open end thereof,A means in said cartridgel near the inner end thereof formling a1rupturableexplo`sive containing chamber, and explosion initiating means in said handle adapted to cooperate with said initiating means to ignite the explosion in said chamber.
2. In a re extinguisherrof the class described, a tubular handle, a cylindrical cartridge holder extending axially from one end. of said handle andhaving an open end, a cartridge loaded with fire extinguishing material and vdetachably mounted in said holder so as to protrude but slightly beyond the open end of said holder, means in said cartridge adjacent to its inner end formingra rupturable explosive containing chamber and explosion initiating means in said chamber comprising a percussive cap, a ring Apin and a spring. l
3, In a fire extinguisher of the class described a handle forming barrel of tubular form, a cylindrical cartridge extending axially from one end of said barrel, and loaded with pulverulent fire extinguishing material said cartridge' having a butt end Vopposeduto said end of the barrel, means in said cartridge adjacent said butt end forming a rupturable explosive containing chamber, means to ignite explosive in said chamber from` the exterior of said cartridge, said cartridge having a closure cap frictionally fitting on the other end thereof for detachment under the force of the explosion incident to igniting said explosive.
4. vIn a re extinguisher of the class described cartridge being threaded into said holder.
' 6. In V a fire extinguisher of thefclass described, a.` handle, av cylindrical cartridge holder having an 'open end and a butt end secured t'o one end of said handle a cartridge detachably mountable in said holder in contacting relation therewith and loaded with fire extinguishing` material, means in said` cartridge adjacent to said handle forming a rupturable explosive-containing chamber, explosion initiating means in said chamber,
said holder enclosing said cartridge substantially over they entire length thereof andv actuating means carried by said handle adapted to excite said initiating means for igniting the explosive in said chamber.
7. In a re extinguisher of the class described, a handle, 'a cylindrical cartridge holder having an vopen end and a butt end secured to one end ofl said handle, a cartridge detachably mountable in' said holder in contacting relation therewith and loaded with fire extinguishing material, means in said cartridge adjoining said handle forming a rupturable explosive containing chamber, said holder enclosing said cartridge over substantially the entire length' thereof, a percussion cap in said cartridge, and'actuating means carried byv said handlel arranged to excite said cap to ignite the explosive in said chamber.
. 8. -In a fire extinguisher'of the-class described comprising a handle, a cylindrical cartridge holder havingan openend and abutt end secu 'ed to one end of said handle a cartridge, detacha ly mountable in said holder in ycontacting relation therewith and loaded with're extinguishing materiaLmeans in said cartridge adjoining said handle forming vva rupturable explosive containing
