Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW H. WEIR, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
DRAW-BAR FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,934, dated February 15, 1881. Application filed May 11, 1880. (Model) To all whomit may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW H. WEIR, of the city and county of Los Angeles, and State ofOalifornia, have invented an Im p1 oved Coup a wroughtiron washer, a, which comes behind the usual cast-iron follower and between it and the keys a.
To fasten my draw-head to the cars the stem A is provided with the key a on each side, beveled so that a wrought-iron clasp, a driven over them, will hold the two keys tight to the stem, and a small bolt, a runs transversely through the stem and keeps the band in place. The pull comes sidewise on these two keys, so that it will be impossible to break them or the other key or bolt, and it will be impossible to pull the draw-head out of the car. Usually the transverse key org-against which the washer strikes, is driven through the stem, and the stem is sometimes split when a heavy strain is given. In this the strain comes on the longitudinal keys, which are held by the clasp, and there is no danger of splitting the stem.
To show the manner of attaching the drawheads to the cars, let S S represent the cartimbers. Fastened to them are the four castiron projecting blocks, W W Between these blocks, and abutting thereon, are the wroughtiron pieces or plates X X%, sliding in the grooves or guides M M, and provided with the spring q, whereby the jerks of the car are broken. The draw-head A has a shank or stem, A, which passes through the plates X X and the spring q, and is fastened by means of the head, as before shown.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the draw-head A, with its shank or steam A, and washer a, the beveled keys a, band or clasp a and securingbolt a whereby the draw-head is secured to the cars firmly, and danger of splitting the stem avoided, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ANDREW II. WEIR.
