2 claims. ,tot sig-n1) The present `invention relates to kmfe 4sharpener `apparatus and `has particular reference to a knife Sharpener constructionsuitable for house-` hold use. i
The principal object of the invention is to provide a household knife sharpener which sharpens a knife blade transversely with respect to the` y cutting edge and therefore imparts a honed edge.`
Another object of the invention is to utilize `two complementary grinding disks which have bevelled grinding edges and are mounted so as to position the grinding edges transversely to a knife An additional objectof the invention is to pro-` vide an operating mechanism for causing two complementary grinding disks which are mounted to an angle to each other to rotate in unison.
Still another object to provide a compact knife sharpening device which ismade of a small numi ber of readily manufactured and assembled parts.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features in view, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully described in the detailed description following, in conjunc tion with the `accompanying drawing, and more specifically defined in `the claims appended thereto. i i
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a top plan View of the assembled knife sharpener; f i
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a side view of Fig. 4; i
Iliig.` 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional detail showing the `positionsof the grinding diskswhen sharpening a knife blade, the knife bladebeing indicated by dotted lines.
It has been found desirable to utilize a house! hold knife Sharpener which has two `grinding disks so mounted that they present a plurality of grinding surfaces directed across `the knife blade to be sharpened. the disks rotatingr in unison and contacting the sides of the knife blade. so that the sharpening is transverse to the knife blade edge and not longitudinal. To this end. I provide made of lstamped metal, and having abase` I2 adapted to be mounted on a table or wall portion and provided with suitable openings I3 for receiv-` ing retaining screws or the like. The frame has two upstanding arms I4 which terminate inhorizontal alignment to receive cylindrical Vjournals I5, the journals being preferably secured to the upper endsof the arms, although if desired they may be formed integral therewith. The angular displacement of the arms and journals in a horizontal plane is shown in Fig. 1. A pair `of complementary grinding disks IB, I1 are provided,
each disk being mounted on a rotatable support.`
A preferred construction of support is shown in Fig. 4, and includes a plate member I8 :mounted on the back of the disk and having a hub portion I9 from which an axial shaft 20 extends to be rotatably received Vin the journal I5. portion is recessed to receive a anged bushing `2| which `extends through a central opening 22 in the disk and is locked in place by a back plate 23 and a retaining bolt 24. The face of the bush-` ing ange is preferably hexagonal, as illustrated in Fig. 3, and is slit to receivel one end of a spiral coil 25, the construction thus providing a universal connection between the two disks through the medium of a spiral coil so that rotation of one disk simultaneously causes rotation of the other disk.
As shownin Fig. 4 an` adjusting screw 2B exi tends through a threaded opening in the end wall two grinding disks which have bevelled annular of one journal and contacts the end of the shaft therein; a handle 21. see Fig. 2, is secured tothe end `of the other shaft through a suitable opening in the end of the other journal, whereby manual rotationof the handle produces a positive rotation of both disks.` i
Referring now to Fig. 5 the disk I6 is preferably provided with a plurality of spaced annular i grinding ` edges 28, 29 having their grinding sur faces 30 angularly disposed with respect to the plane of the disk so that they are in parallel re- I lation to a knife blade (indicated in dotted lines) when the disk axis is mounted at an acute angle to the plane of the knife blade, as illustrated.
The second disk I1 is preferablymounted at a complementary acute angle to the plane of the knife blade, and has an angular grinding edge Sharpener I0 includes a frame II, preferably 55 3l with its grinding surface 32 positioned in parallel relation to the knife blade, and preferably `engaging the knife blade edge at a point inter` mediate the grinding surfaces of the first disk, whereby a staggered grinding effect is produced.
The above construction is thus simple to manufactre and to assemble, and comprises two an.-
The hub gularly disposed disks which are simultaneously rotatable and which have their grinding surfaces in the plane of the knife blade at the area of v contact-with the knife blade, whereby the sharpy ening is accomplished by a grinding action transverse to the plane of the knife blade to produce a `honing effect on the knife blade edge.
While I have described a specific constructional 'embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that changes in the size vand relation of the parts and in their construction. and assemblage may be made to suit the requirements for different types of knife Sharpeners, without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as dened in the appended claims. v
I claim: l. A blade Sharpener comprising a'base'member having two spaced journals, two grinding disks each having a support including yan axial shaft, said shafts being rotatably mounted in said adjacent at one point, a universal-connection between said disks consisting of a spiral spring having its ends locked centrally to each disk,
means for rotating one disk, whereby said disks ripherally adjacent at one point, a universal conjournals and angularly disposed with respect to each other whereby said disks areperipherally nection between said disks consisting of aspira] spring having. its ends locked centrally to each disk, means for rotating one disk, whereby lsaid disks rotate simultaneously,l and means for axially adjusting the shaft of the other disk, said disks having relatively staggered annular grinding edges shaped to provide parallel grindingl areas .at the point of adjacency.
