Description

June 5, R. M, GLOVER CARTON OR CONTAINER Filed Oct. 2, 1941 INVENTOR Rol h MGlover BY HI i ORNEY Patented June 5, 1945 CARTON OR CONTAINER Ralph Murray Glover, White Plains, N. Y., as-
signor. by mesne assignments, to `Box Blank Corporation. New York. N. Y., a corporation o! Delaware Application OctoberZ, 1941, Serial No. 413,256
. 15 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in cartons or containers.
In general, a carton or container embodying the invention comprises a body part and a cover part, the body part being provided with an access or discharge opening preferably at one end and the cover part with a dispensing opening, preferably located at a lateral side, the body part and the cover part otherwise being devoid of opening, the aforesaid being combined with suitable means for eilecting a restricted movement of the cover part relative to the body part to afford the dispensing of the contents, but maintaining at all times the cover part and the body part in relative telescopic engagement.
Embodiments of the invention are preferably formed of relatively sti sheet material, such as paper stock, notably of cardboard, but may be formed of other sheet material having suitable characteristics for attaining the objects of the invention.
In general, the contents of the carton or container are dispensed through the dispensing opening of the cover part when the cover part has been moved to its maximum, i. e., restricted position in direction away from the major portion of the body part. The telescopic engagement-restricting and maintaining means may be arranged to aiford a snap action in the movement of the cover part to its open and closed positions, respectively. The cover part may also be providedwith stopper means whereby the access or discharge opening of the body part is sealed against leakage of davor-imparting and/or aroma-imparting constitutents of the material contained in the carton or container, also against sifting of contents, sealing against air, and the like.'
Further features and objects of the invention will be more fully understood from the following detail description and the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of the invention, illustrating the cover part and body part in closed position.
Fig.'2 is a similar perspective view of the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, and illustrating the cover part and body part in relative open position.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken I on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a blank suitable for forming the cover part of the embodiment of Figs. 1 through 4 of integral construction.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of a blank suitable for forming a body part of the embodiment of Figs. 1 through 4 of integral construction.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of another embodiment of the invention illustrating the cover part and body part in relative open position.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged elevational detail view of the cover part and adjacent body part of Fig. 'l partly broken away in longitudinal section to illustrate otherwise hidden parts.
Fig. 9 is a similar view, broken away on a longitudinal section at right angles to that ofthe broken-away section of Fig. 8.
Fig. 10 is a detail sectional view taken on line Ill-I0 of Fig. 9.
Fig. 11 is a plan view of a blank suitable for forming the-cover part of the embodiment of Figs. 7 through 10 of integral construction.
Fig. 12 is a plan view of a blank suitable for forming a body part of the embodiment of Figs. '7 through 10 of integral construction, an intermediate portion of the blank being broken away for reduction of showing.
Referring to the embodiment shown -in Figs. 1 through 4, the same as shown comprises a body part 20 and cover part 2|. The body part 20 is shown as provided with an access or discharge opening, indicated at 20a, see Figs. 3 and 4, disposed at its upper end as positioned in Figs. 1 through 4. The body part 20 otherwise is imperforate. y
As illustrated, the body part is of rectangular cross-section, but may be of any desired polygonal or other cross-section. The bottom 20h of the body part 20 is closed; as illustrated, the bottom Zlib is formed to be closed pursuant to conventional practice.
The cover 2| is provided with a dispensing opening 2|a which may be of any conguration and located as desired'in accord with the invention. As illustrated in Figs. 1 through 4, the dispensing opening 2|a is disposed on a lateral side of greater dimension of the cover part and closely adjacent the closed end 2lb of the cover part.
The cover part 2| is associated with the body part 20 to restrict movement of the cover part in direction away lfrom the major portion of the body part (to thereby dispense the contents as referred to more fully hereinafter) and to retain the cover part 2| at all times in telescopic engagement with the body part adjacent the portion thereof proximate the access opening 20a of the body part. Any suitable means for carrying out such function and relationship may be em-Y ployed. As on suitable means for carrying out such function and relationship, as illustrated in Figs. 1 through 4, the restricting and retaining means comprising one or more extensions 22 o! relatively sti material one end oi' each such extension projecting from or otherwise is secured to the material of the sides of the body part 2l and adjacent its access opening 2.a. the other end of each such extension being secured to the inner face of the top 2lb of the cover part. In the embodiment illustrated. two such extensions 22, 22, are employed, To enhance the yieldability of such relatively stir! extensions 22, 22, the same may be weakened at portions thereof, such as the illustrated one or more score lines, indicated at 22a, preferably disposed proximately centrally and extending transversely of the longitudinal dimension of the extensions 22, 22.
It is noted that the dispensing opening 2|a of the cover part 2| is disposed in the indicated lateral side of the cover part 2i to secure closure of the dispensing opening 2 ia and therewith of the access opening a oi the body part 2| when the cover part 2| and the body part 2l are in maximum telescopic engagement, i. e., when the cover part has been moved to the limit toward the major portion of the body part. Upon relative movement of the cover part in direction away from the major portion oi the body part 2l under restriction by the one or more extensions 22, the dispensing opening 2|a is opened to greater and greater extent and is opened to maximum extent upon full movement of the cover part 2| in the stated direction.
Figs. 1 and 3 illustrate the closed position of the dispensing opening 2|a and Figs, 2 and 4 the full open position of the dispensing opening 2|a. Regulation of the eifective area of opening of the dispensing opening 2in is attained by 1ocating the same with relation to the marginal line indicated at 23a, i. e., the spacing of the proximate edge of the dispensing opening 2|a from the marginal line 23a, see Fig. 5, indicating the intersection of the applicable lateral side oi the cover part 2| and the closed end 2lb of the cover part 2|.
Embodiments of the invention typified by Fig 1 through 4 may be charged by charging the tobe-dispensed contents through the opened bottom 2lb of the body part; the bottom 20d is thereafter closed.
The blanks illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 indicate suitable means for forming the cover part and the body part of the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 through 4 of integral construction. Panels of these blanks corresponding to the parts of the embodiment shown in Figs. l through 4 bear like reference characters. It will be observed also that the panels 23 respectively extending from the material of the two larger dimensioned and the two smaller dimensioned lateral sides of the cover part 2| serve to close the top 2lb of the cover part. The panel 24 combines with the extreme right hand panel of the cover part 2| to aiord overlapping glue areas for attaining the hollow configuration of the cover part. The panels of the blank shown in Fig.' 6 indicate similarly the formation of the body part 2l of integral construction. Fig. 6 also shows the extensions 22 as formed integral with the material of panels forming two oppositely positioned lateral sides of the body part 2|I. The score lines 22h serve as hinges for the respective extensions .22, upon securement of the end portions of the extensions 22 to the inner face of the top 2 Ib o! the coverpartasbyglueorthelike. v'lihescoralines 22s enhance the yieldabiiity of the respective extensions 22. Fig. 6 shows also extensions 2l projecting from the indicated panels of the lateral sides of the body part 2l which serve as means for closing the bottom 2lb of the body part 2l. The extension 2l cooperates with the extreme right hand panel oi' the body Part 2l for anording overlapping glue areas for attaining the hollow configuration o! the body part 2l.
I'he embodiment typliied by Figs. 7 through 10 corresponds generally to the embodiment of Figs. 1 through 4, and corresponding parts are indicated by like reference characters. The embodiment of Figs. "l through 10 illustrates the locating of the dispensing opening 2in at a lateral sidefof the cover part 2| of lesser dimension. The embodiment of Figs. '1 through 10 commises the further features of locating on the one or more extensions I22 the score line 22e-in lieu of the above referred score line 22a-to eiiect a snap" opening and closing action of the cover part 2| relative to the body part 2l. Speciilcally by locating the 22e score line transverseb ot the direction oi' length of each extension 22 and and at a spacing greater from its end which is secured to the indicated panel oi' the lateral side of the body part 2l as compared with its spacing from its end which is secured to the top 2lb ot the cover part 2|, an eccentric lever action is produced, thereby causing a snap" action in the to and iro movements of the cover part relative to the body part.
The embodiment shown in Figs. 7 through 10 features also the embodiment of a stopper eiement 21 formed either integral with or attached to the end portions of the extensions 22 which are secured to the inner falce of the top 2lb of the cover part; in the illustrated embodiment such stopper element 21 is shown formed integrally with the extensions 22. Buch stopper element 21 serves, when the cover part is in relative closed position with regard to the body part 2l, to seal the access opening '2.a o! the body part 2l, for purposes of air-sealing the closure and safe-guarding against loss of iiavor or aroma, and precluding sifting of contents, and like purposes.
The blanks indicated in Figs. 11 and 12 illustrate one method of forming the body Dart 2l and cover part 2| of integral construction, inclusive of their respective closing end panels and of the ex tensions 22; like parts are indicated by like reference characters.
It will be observed with regard to the blank shown in Fig. 11 that the dispensing opening 2|a formed in a latral side of the cover Dart 2| may be open-ended when the blank 2| is in projected, i. e. plan position. Fig. 1l illustrates also the employment of but two panels 22, projecting from the indicated :two panels of oppositely disposed lateral sides of the cover part 2|; such arrangement is advantageous in cc-action with the thereto glued" end portion of the extensions 22, see Fig. l2, for dually closing the end 2lb of the cover part 2| and forming the stopper means 21, as weil as securing the concerned end portions of the extensions l22. The stopper means 21 may comprise suitable material such as cork as additional stopper means, suitably secured to the stated end portions of the extensions 22,
As appears irom -the aforesaid, the body part and cover part and their respective associated parts may be formed of any suitable resilient stil! sheet material; sheet material such as cardboard or like paper stock is preferred.
Whereas I have described my invention by reference to specific forms thereof, it will be understood that many changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
