'Prior to the instant invention, in coatingfplane members with adhesives in special designs such as annular designs, it has been necessary to effect the coating more or less by hand `with the utilization of -a mask or guide or stencil. When both sides of the member are to beso treated, it has formerly been necessary to wait until the first side has vbecome dry prior. to coating the second side. When theiirst side is dry, the work'is turned over and the second side treated in thelsame manner as the first side. has been treated. yIt is another object of the' instant invention tov provide a. novel apparatus for uniformly and speedily rcoating a planemember with aflm in the shape of an annulus.
It is a further object of thisinvention to projacent the periphery thereof.
It is still a further object of the instant invention to provide an apparatus for speedily and efficiently applying a cement iilm in the shape of an annulus adjacent the periphery of lenses such as acetate gas mask'lenses or windows.
Other objects and the nature and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing,` wherein:

Referring to the drawing, the pulley I is adapted to be driven by a belt connected toa driving shaft of an engineor motor. The pulley IIJ is rigidly .keyed to the shaft II to which is rigidly secured the driving gear I2 which meshes with the large -driven gear I3 to eifect speed reduction of the gear I4 which is formed integral f lrdjustably supported -on the cross member"`2| with the gear I3. The gears I3 and -Il are secured to the shaft I5 which is adaptedto rotate in a iirst direction. The gear I4 meshes'with .the Vgear I6 which is secured tothe :shaft I1 which rotates in a second or opposite direction to the rotation of the shaft I5. A y

In line with the axis of the guide G and in the outer wall 22 of the trough I8 is formed the notch or groove 23 which serves as a guide for work to be passed between the coating wheels I9 and 20. 5
In carrying out the method in accordancewith the invention the work such as the acetate disc 24, shown in Fig. 3, is held between the forefinger and index or middle fingers of the operator and an edge thereof is inserted between a pair of coating Wheels, such as the wheels I9 and 2li, until the edge of the work abuts the guide Il and a continuation of the edge rests in the groove or slot 23 of the trough I8. Rotation of the coating wheels I 9 and 20 toward each other as shown by the arrows in Fig. 2, effects application of the coating medium such as the adhesive 25 to the disc 24 in the shape of an annulus on each side of the disc evenly, neatly and speedily.
The rotation of the wheels I9 and 20 'effects simultaneous rotation of the disc 24 by frictional contact. It is conceivable, however, that in accordance with the invention the work such as the disc 24 might be rotated by a third member which would hold the work with a suction cup or equivalent means.
When the method is so carried out,
frictional contact would not be necessary though it would be essential that the lm picked up by the coating wheels I9 and 20 contact the surface to be coated of the work 24.
The Wheels I9 and 20 may be of any suitable material such as steel or wood or the like. The axial dimension of the coating wheels on the surface thereof will determine the width of the pattern of the coating applied to the work. The coating wheels, are secured to the shafts I5 and I1 in a readily removable manner so that by removal of the nuts N, the coating wheels can be removed and larger or smaller size wheels in axial dimension secured to the shafts I5 and AI'I in order to apply a coating of larger or smaller radial dimension in annular form on a piece of work.
`It is also possible to utilize different coating and 2, the pulley wheel II] is caused to rotate by a belt, not shown, driven by a pulley on an engine or motor driven shaft, which is also not shown. Rotation of the shaft II to which the pulley I is fixed effects rotation of the gear I2 which drives the large gear I3 to effect speed reduction. The
gear I4 which rotates at the same speed as the gear I3 rotates in the opposite'direction to the direction of rotation of gear I6 which is secured to the shaft I'I so that the shaft I1 and the shaft I which is secured to the gear I4 rotate at the same relatively slow speeds but in opposite directions as shown in Figure 2. The coating wheels I9 and 2|] which are secured to the shafts I5 and I'I respectively, rotate in the bath of coating material such as adhesive in the trough I8 carrying coating material to the corresponding side of the work as already described and as shown in the drawing. This coating operation is carried out by the apparatus in a speedy, neat and even manner.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore the invention is not limited to what is shown in the drawing and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In apparatus for coating discs with annular coatings on each side of said discs adjacent the periphery thereof, means for driving a pair of work moving and coating wheels in opposite directions so that adjacent portions of said wheels move downwardly and the portions of the wheels remote from each other move upwardly, means for holding a bath of coating material located directly beneath said wheels so that said wheels dip into the bath of coating material, guide means for guiding the piece in work associated with said apparatus and for locating work to be coated accurately between said work moving and coating wheels, said guide means including a stop member located on one side of the space between adjacent portions of the wheels so that work may be inserted between adjacent portions of the coating wheels as far as said stop member, said guide means including a combined guide and scraping member located above the bath of coating material and on the side of the wheels opposite to the side on which the stop member is located, said guide and scraping member being located below said stop member, said guide and scraping member serving to return excess coating 4material by gravity to said bath, the adjacent portions of said work moving and coating wheels being located sufficiently close to each other so that a disc to be coated which is passed therebetween up to the guide means will engage said wheels and frictional transmission will take place to effect .rotation of the disc to be coated whereby the disc will be coated on each side in an area i in the form of an annulus, and be guided over the bath by said guide member.
