GARMENT HANGER Filed Aug. 30, 1943 ATTORNEY Patented May 1, 1945 1 UNITED s'mrlas arent .or 1c E GARMENT HANGER.
Andrew H. Larsen, Green Bay, Wis.
Application August 30, 1943, Serial No. 500,489
Claims. ('01. 223-96) The invention relates to clothes hangers and more particularly to trousers or pants hangers.
The main object of the invention is to provide a clothes hanger embodying a pair of cooperative jaw elements with an operative connection between these elements whereby the weight of the garment on one jaw acts to move the other jaw into holding engagement with the garment.
A further object is to provide a hanger in which the operation of placing the garment against one of the jaws of the hanger and pulling down acts to bring the other jaw into holding engagement with the garment.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is an elevation view of a hanger embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a detailed vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, showing the jaws closed;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the jaws open;
Fig. 4 is a detailed horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates generally one jaw member and 6 a cooperative jaw member, said members being pivotally secured together by a pin 1. These jaw members may be made in various ways, either all metal or partly metal and partly wood. I
As herein shown, the jaw member 5 has a wooden garment-receiving portion 8 provided with a felt lining 9 and spaced somewhat re silient metal rods in forming an arm connected with its central portion and slidably connected at their outer ends to a sheet metal plate II. The rods ID are bent intermediate their ends at l2 to form pivot pin bearings and are shown slidably fixed to the plate by bent flange portions H thereof. A hook I3 is connected to the upper end of the plate H by a screw I 4.
The plate II is formed to provide a cam l5 with a slot I6 adjacent thereto and spaced tongues l1 forming a stop.
The jaw member 6 'has a wooden garmentreceiving portion l8 provided with a felt lining I9 and a somewhat resilient. rod forming arm 20 bent to provide spaced arms 2 l anchored at their ends in the wood and bent intermediate their ends to form pivot pin bearings 22. The U- shaped outer end 23 of this rod 20 is bent at an angle as indicated at 24 in Fig. 2, so that it may .of trousers are brought by the operator into engagement with the part 8 of the jaw member 5, and then this jaw member is moved downwardly relative to the plate II which causes a similar downward movement of the jaw member 6, and this movement causes the U-shaped end 23 of the jaw member to move relative to the cam I5 which acts on said end so as to swing its garment engaging portion [8 into holding or clamping engagement with the garment and come to a position in which the transverse portion 25 of said end 23 engages said tongues H to limit further inward movement of part 18. The upward movement of the jaw 5 relative to the plate ll causes the jaw 6 to be returned to its open position, as shown in Fig. 3, to permit the garment to be removed. The supporting or connecting parts for the parts 8 and I8 are somewhat resilient, so that they may yield in case the garment material being clamped is relatively heavy.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any particular form or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are included in the claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a garment hanger, the combination of a pair of cooperative pivoted jaw members, a support for said members, a cam on said support controlling the swinging clamping movement. of
one of said jaw members on thesliding movement of said other jaw member relative to said support for moving the jaw members into clamping engagement with the garment.
2. In a garment hanger, the combination of a pair of cooperative pivoted jaw members, a support for said jaw members having a cam, one of said jaw members being slidably mounted relative to said support, the other of said jaw members being carried by said'slidable jaw member and controlled by said cam and moved thereby into clamping engagement with the garment on the movement of said jaw members relative to said support. v
3. In a garment hanger, the combination of a pair of cooperative pivoted jaw members, a support for said jaw members having. a cam, one of said jaw members being slidably mounted relative to said support, the other of said jaw members being carried by said slidable jaw member and controlled by said cam and moved thereby into clamping engagement with the garment on the movement of said jaw members relative to said support, and means for limiting the movement of said jaw'members relative to each other.
4. In a garment hanger, the combination of jaw members provided with resilient arm portions pivotally connected together, the arm portion of one jaw member adapted to be slidably connected to said fixed support, a cam on said support, the arm portion for the other jaw member being inclined and adapted to cooperate with said cam to cause movement of said jaw v members into garment-clamping position on their movement relative to said support.
