4 Claims.
The present invention relates to desk tops and supporting structures-therefor; and its object is, generally, to provide a desk top and a supporting structure improved in various respects hereinafter appearing; and particularly, toprovide a desk top comprising a body having a bottom, forward and rearward walls and side walls all made of a single metal sheet, and a cover including a fixed part mounted on the rearward wall and a hingedly mounted lid part, the desk top having also improved features of construction for mount-.- ing the lids hinges, etc.; and further, to provide such a supporting structure whereby the desk top shall be very securely held in proper horizontal positionand against being canted therefrom.
These and any other objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the.illustrative desk top structure particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevational side View of a desk top, shown partially in forward-rearward vertical section taken on line Il ofFigure 2;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of a lateral portion thereof, its cover which includes a fixed part and a lid part being mostly broken away to show parts beneath;
Figures 3 and 4 are vertical sectional views (enlarged) of. said lid part and a side wall of the desk top, taken on lines 33 and 4-'-4 respectivel of Figure '1;
Fig'iu'e 5 is a central vertical forward-rearward sectional'view of the body or main portion of the desk top and its supporting structure taken line 5 of Figure 6; i
Figure Bis a top plan view of parts of said supporting structure, approximately one lateral half of the same being broken away in this view.
As illustrated by these drawings, the box-like desk top I comprises a unitary main or body portion 2 made of sheet metal or the like bent into the illustrated shape, and comprises also a cover including the fixed rearward part 5 and the IS the lower leaf l6 of a suitablehinge, on the flange ll of whose other orupper leaf 18 the lid part 6 of the cover is mounted at l9, said leaves being pivotally connected. at 20. Forwardlyof the flange [4, said upper edge portions l3 are at 2| curved over inwardly as shown in Figure 4 to provide a wide round I upper edge of the side walls 9. I
The main or body portion 2 oi the desk top is held on the upwardly extending peripheral rim 2 2 of the approximately horizontally-disposed base member 3 of the desk tops supporting structure. As illustrated, this base member is U- shaped in plan having diverging arms 24 as shown in Figure 6. The bottom of the desk top rests, preferably removably as indicated, on said rim and rests medially on the upper surface of said .structures horizontally disposed'plate 4 located within the area circumscribed by the rim 22. This plate is spaced above the bottom of base member 3.
. Through registering openings 26, 21 in the base member 3 and plate 4, the tubular supporting post 25 extends being secured therein as by welding or the like indicated at28 and 29 in Figure 5.- These supporting parts 3. and 4, being thus mounted on the post 25 in spaced vertical positions, the desk top is rigidly held against bein bent or canted downwardlyat any point.
The arms 24 adjacent their ends are shown detachably connected with the desk top's bottom 1 as by screws 39 having nuts 3| as shown in Figure 5. As indicated, the post 25 may be contained in a supporting lower post 32 compressed thereon by a suitable collar 33 having a threaded bolt 34.
The invention beingintended to be pointed out in the claims, is not to be limited to or by details of construction of the particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawings or hereinbefore described.
I claim: 1. A structure of the class described, comprising' a horizontally disposed base having a medial bottom walls, a horizontally disposed plate within the rim whereon the bottom of the desk top is medially supported, a post extending through said opening in fixed, supporting relation with the base and the plate, and means for connecting the base with the bottom of the desk top.
2. A structure of the class described, compris- 3. A structure of the classdescribed, cbmpris- I ing a horizontally disposed base having an upwardly extending peripheral rim whereon the bottom of the desk top is supported, a desk top having top and bottom walls, a horizontally disv posed plate within the rim Whereon the bottom of the desk top is medially supported, the base and the plate having registering openings there-.
through, a post extending through said openings in fixed relation with the base and the plate, and means for connecting the base with the bottom of the desk top.
4. A structure of the class described, comprising a horizontally disposed U-shaped base having a medial opening therethrough, diverging arms and an upwardly extending peripheral rim whereon the bottom of the desk top is supported, a desk top having top and bottom walls, a horizontally disposed plate within the rim whereon the bottom of the desk top is medially supported, a post extending through said opening in fixed, supporting relation with the base and the plate, and means for connecting the free ends of the arms of the base with the bottom of the desk top.
