PACKING-BOX FOR AMMUNITION.
SPECIFICATION forming part-of Letters Patent No. 237,406, dated February 8, 1881.
Application filed October 11, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Beitknown that I, EDWARD G. PARKHURST, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing- Boxes for Ammunition; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters in the figures indicate the same parts.
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of boxes in which the ammunition for'machine-guns is carried for use in the field.
As at present used the ammunition, consisting of metallic shells charged with powder and ball, is first packed in pasteboard or other similar boxes containin g about twenty cartridges, and these cases are packed in boxes or sliding drawers fitting into the caisson of the gun, which are designed to hold a certain number of the pasteboard cases, so as to fill them and prevent movement during transportation. 1t frequently happens, however, that part of the pasteboard cases are used out of one of the boxes, in which case the remainder are loose in the box and become destroyed or damaged by shifting about.
The object of my improvement is to provide a means for retaining either the whole or part of the interior cases in place within the packing-box, so that they will be prevented from shifting their position while the box is transported.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 shows a perspective view of one of the boxes or drawers withdrawn from a caisson, or an independent boxwith the cover removed. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the sliding partition or gate which is adapted to fit into the grooves in the sides of the box.
A is the packing-box.
B B, &c., are the interior cases containing The sides and ends of these cases are shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and
the box, when full, is designed to hold three full lengths, or forty-five in all. In the drawings nineteen are shown, fifteen in their ordinary position when the box is filled and four standing on their ends.
O is a removable partition, which can be slipped into any pair of a series of grooves,.LDr""* be such as to include the full length of the cases, or one or more thicknesses, as shown in the drawings, so that the cases can be packed flatwise or endwise to fill the space.
For the purpose of easily removing the partition 6 when the box is full there is a socket, E, forming a handle, by which it is lifted. The end of the box has a corresponding notch The disor opening, F, so that the fingers can be placed 7 5 in the socket E.
The partition 0 is attached to the box by a cord of sufficient length to allow of its being placed in any of the grooves, so that it shall not be dropped or lost. at G in the drawings. When the partition is placed at the end of the box this cord is coiled up and placed in the recess H.
Besides holding the ammunition in place in This cord is shown the partially-emptied box, the partition 0 serves the purpose of facilitating the withdrawal of the cases from the full box. The drawing out of the partition from its position at the end, when the box is full, leaves a space for the fingers to enter and lift the case'sread; o
ily, while without this space the removal of i the first cases is a difficult operation. What I claim as my invention is- 1. The box A, provided with the grooves D. and the removable partition 0, adapted to lie against the end of the box when the same is wholly filled, and to be removed to the other grooves tohold and confine the ammunitioncases when the box is partially filled, substanholding the cord G, in combination ivith the tially as described. end of the box, which closes the receptacle for 2. The combination of the removable intethe cord, substantially as described.
rior partition, 0, having a handle-socket, E, EDWARD Gr. PARKHURST. 5 with the box A, having its end DIOfldQd with Witnesses:
the notch-F substantially as described. THEO. G. ELLIs,
3. The partition 0, having the recess H for WENDELL B. CURTIS.
