PACKING-BOX FOR AMMUNITION.
SPECIFICATION forming part-of Letters Patent No. 237,406, dated February 8, 1881.
Application filed October 11, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Beitknown that I, EDWARD G. PARKHURST, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing- Boxes for Ammunition; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of boxes in which the ammunition for'machine-guns is carried for use in the field.
As at present used the ammunition, consisting of metallic shells charged with powder and ball, is first packed in pasteboard or other similar boxes containin g about twenty cartridges, and these cases are packed in boxes or sliding drawers fitting into the caisson of the gun, which are designed to hold a certain number of the pasteboard cases, so as to fill them and prevent movement during transportation. 1t frequently happens, however, that part of the pasteboard cases are used out of one of the boxes, in which case the remainder are loose in the box and become destroyed or damaged by shifting about.
The object of my improvement is to provide a means for retaining either the whole or part of the interior cases in place within the packing-box, so that they will be prevented from shifting their position while the box is transported.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 shows a perspective view of one of the boxes or drawers withdrawn from a caisson, or an independent boxwith the cover removed. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the sliding partition or gate which is adapted to fit into the grooves in the sides of the box.

The partition 0 is attached to the box by a cord of sufficient length to allow of its being placed in any of the grooves, so that it shall not be dropped or lost. at G in the drawings. When the partition is placed at the end of the box this cord is coiled up and placed in the recess H.
