WILLIAM M. VAN WAGENEN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWARD A. LEONARD, OF SAME PLACE.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 237,342, dated February 1, 1881. Application filed December 20, 1880. (N0 model.)
to wear a button-hole.
Figure 1 shows the face of a button; Fig. 2, a cross-section.
The buttons are made from any materials, and may be turned, molded, or covered to suit the article of wear, the principle in all cases being the same, which is to make the buttonhead A with a smooth solid shank, B, and flange-base U. The shankis a groove, in which the button-hole of a garment will rest and not be subject to the wear from friction, as when it came in contact with the thread ordinarily used in sewing on the button. The eye-holes 1) (two or more) are made through the button, shank, and base, and therefore the thread used in sewing on cannot come in contact with the button-hole and wear that, or have the hard edge of the button-hole wear off the thread, and the plate or base resting and bound firmly against the material of the garment prevents any possibility of friction on the thread, and leaves scarcely any chance for the button to work off.
In the place of thread, wire may he used in attaching the buttons, and be perhaps more serviceable, and yet not be liable to wear the button-hole.
With this invention I may make a much more serviceable button and protect the part of the garment buttoned on it from being worn.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improved button composed of the head A, grooved shank B, and flanged base 0, provided with perforations through the whole, all substantially as for the purpose specified.
