Application September 21, 1943, Serial No. 503,297
1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in screeds and more particularly to an adjustable screed adapted to maintain a prop-- er grade elevation while rodding or leveling fresh concrete.
An important object of the invention is to provide an adjustable screed which can be conveniently adjusted to accurate refinements.
Another important object of the invention is to provide an adjustable screed wherein the parts are protected from concrete and other material.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is atop plan view of the structure.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view showing one of the legs in the act of being adjusted bya special tool.
Figure 5 is a side elevational view with a portion broken away Showing one of the threaded tubes.
Figure 6 is a side elevational view of one of the threaded legs.
Figure '7 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing the upper portion of the special tool.
Figure 8 is a vertical sectional view through either the top or bottom of which can be used as a grade. A plurality of leg structures 6 are disposed through this channeled member 5 and each leg assembly consists of an internally and externally threaded tube .1 having its upper portion disposed through an opening 8 in the bottom of the channeled member 5, and the jamb nuts 9 are provided on this portion of the tube 1, one above and one below the channeled member 5 so as to grip the same and hold the threaded tube 1 in proper adjusted position with respect to the channeled member 5. An internally threaded cap It! can be provided for the upper end of the tube 1 to prevent concrete from entering the tube.
Numeral H denotes an elongated threaded leg member having a key receiving recess 12 in the upper end thereof. The lower end of the leg is formed with a spur I3.
Numeral M generally refers to a tool for 'ad- .iusting the legs H and this tool consists of a crank [5 having a shank It provided at its lower end with a key I! to engage in the recess l 2 of the corresponding leg H. The tool M has an upstanding portion around which a hand grip sleeve l9 is disposed and the upper end of the upstanding portion H! has a U-shaped formation 20. The tool is disposed into the tube 1 in themanner shown inv Figure 4 for adjusting the leg I l,' and after the leg has been properly adjusted, a plug 2| is screwed down into the tube 1 to jamb against the upper end of the leg II to prevent self-adjusting thereof. After this, the cap Ill can be disposed in place.
For holding the structure in place, tie wires 22 extend from anchoring members 23 and having' their upper end portions passed through openings 25 in the side walls of the channeled member 5 and connected to ends of tensioning springs 26 extending transversely of the channeled member.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes'in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scopeof the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the claimed as new is:
A screed of the character described comprising an elongated channeled member provided with adjustable supporting legs and tie means for the elongated member, said tie means consisting of opposed metal strands passing through openings at opposite sides of the channeled member and extending at a downward incline from sides of the elongated member, anchors for lower ends of said strands and tensioning springs extending transversely of the elongated member'and having their ends connected with upper ends of the strands.
invention, what is CECIL M. AUTREY.
