UNITED STATES 1,474,458 PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM WALKER WILKISON, OF AVALON, MISSOURI.
ANCHOR.
Application filed October 27, 1922.
' graph and other posts. an one object is to provide a substantial device of this character which is simple in construction and operation.
Another object, is the provision of means for taking up slack in the guy wires, and means for preventing theanchor itself from working loose after being installed.
Other objects will hereinafter appear, and in order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be had-to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fi 1 is a side elevation of the device with the ower portion of a guy wire attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged broken vertical section taken on line IIII of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section on line III-III of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a broken detail side elevation of a spreader and a portion of a rod to which said spreader is fixed.
Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view of a member threaded upon the lower end of the rod and provided with a plurality of fiukes.
Fig. 6 is a detail of one of the fiukes.
Fig. 7 is a cross section of said fluke.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a rod 2 having threads 4 and 6 at its upper and lower'ends respectively, the threads at one end being rlght threads and those at the opposite end being left threads for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
8 designates a conical spreader fixed to the rod 2 at a point just above the threads 6.
Said conical spreader 8 tapers downwardly and has a plurality of ratchet-like shoulders 10 with abrupt faces 12.
14 designates a member which is threaded upon the threaded lower portion of the rod 2. Said member 14 has a plurality of openings 16 extending therethrough and preferably spaced equal distances apart.
18 designates a plurality of flukes having reduced lower ends 20 which extend through Serial No. 597,285.
the openings 16 and are secured in place by suitable means such as a wire 22. The upper ends 24 of the liukes 18 are curved outward ly and have sharpened edges 25. Each fluke 18 has a relatively wide longitudinal edge 26 for engagement with any of the abru t faces 12 of the shoulders 10 on t e spreader 8.
28 desi ates an element threaded upon the threa ed upper end of the rod 2. Said element 28 hasa pair of upwardly extendmg arms 30 terminating in eyes 32, to which the lower portion of a guy wire 34: may be readily connected. The element 28 ma be locked at any point of its adjustment y a jamb nut 36 engaging the threads 4.
In practice when the anchor is to be installed in rock or other hard material a, hole is drilled to the desired depth and of sulficient diameter to freely admit the spreader 8 and the flukes 18 when the latter are adjusted with the member 14: to the lower position indicated by the dotted lines, Fig. 1. The rod 2, together with the flukes 18 and the spreader 8 are inserted in the hole, the upper end of the rod 2 being allowed to extend out of the hole at approximately the length of the threaded portion 4. After the guy wi're34 has been connected to the telehone or other post to be supported the ower ends of the two strands are attached to the eyes 32 of the arms 30. The rod 2 is then rotated by means of a wrench or other suitable tool in a direction to cause its threaded portion 6 to pass downwardly in the'member 14 and the element 28 to pass downwardly upon the threaded portion 4 until the desired tension is obtained upon the guy wire 34. 'When rotating the rod 2 the element 28 is held from rotating so that it will travel downwardly upon said rod 2,
as stated. As the rod 2 moves downwardly, the spreader 8 travels therewith and spreads the flukes 18 apart until the upper edges 25 become firmly embedded in the walls of the hole, so that the anchor cannot be withdrawn. Owing to the shape of the shoulders 10. the spreader 8 is free to rotate with the rod 2 while the same is being screwed downwardly in the member 14 to tension the guy wire 34, but after the desired tension is had the rod 2 cannot be unscrewed owing to the abrupt faces 12 coming into contact with the corresponding edges 26 of the flukes 18. The element 28 is also prevented from coming loose by means of the j amb nut 36 which is screwed firmly a ainst the lower end of said element 28, as s own by Fig. 1.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that I have produced an anchor embodying the advantages above pointed out, and while I have shown and described the preferred construction, combination and arrangement of parts, I reserve the right to make such changes as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the character described consisting of a rod, a member threaded upon one end of said rod, flukes loosely connected to said member, and a spreader fixed to the rod to spread the flukes at art when the rod is screwed into the memiier, said spreader having means which positively engage flukes and prevent the rod unscrewing from the member.
2. A device of the character described consisting of a rod, a conical spreader fixed to said rod and provided wlth ratchet-like shoulders, a member threaded upon said rod, and flukes carried by said member and adapted to be forced outwardly by the spreader, an edge of each fluke being adapted to engage m a shoulder on the spreader and prevent the rod unscrewing from the threaded member.
3. A device of the character described consisting of a rod, a member threaded upon one end of said rod, flukes loosely connected to said member, a spreader fixed to the rod to spread the flukes apart when the rod is screwed into the member, said spreaderscrewed into the member, said spreader hav- 1ng means which positively engage the fiukes and prevent the rod unscrewing from the member, an element threaded upon the other end of the rod and provided with arms,-and means on the rod for locking said element at any point of its adjustment.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature, in the resence of two witnesses.
