Description

April 10, 1945. B. C. AUST- VALVE GRINDER I Filed Au 6, 194:5
Inventor Patented Apr. 10, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE VALVE GRINDER Benjamin 0. Aust, Sioux City, Iowa Application August 6, 1943, Serial No. 497,653
- 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in valve grinders of the type comprising. a collapsible suction cup for operatively connecting the tool to the head of the valve to be seated.
The primary object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a valve grinder of the aforementioned character comprising novel means for centering the tool on the valve and for maintaining said tool in true alignment therewith during the entire seating operation.
Another very important object-of the invention is to provide a valve grinder of the character described which embodies novel means for removab1y securing the suction cup on the stem of the tool.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a valve grinder of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly eflicient and reliable in use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein lik characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevational view, showing a valve grinder constructed in accordance with the present invention connected to a valve.
Figure 2 is a view principally in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1. I
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the device.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference numeral l designates generally' a conventional combustion engine poppet valve comprising a stem 2 with an integral head 3 on one end thereof. The head 3 has formed centrally therein the usual recess 4.
The embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises a collapsible suction cup 5 of resilient rubber or other suitable material. he suction cup 5 may be of any suitable size. Formed integrally with the suction cup 5 is an upstanding socket 6.,
Th socket 8 is for the reception of a metallic operating stem 'I.- The stem 1 extends downwardly through the suction cup 5 and terminates in a conical lower end portion constituting a 9 of said suction cup, and is seated on an internal conical shoulder 8' in the suction cup 5 provided with an axial aperture, 8" through which the center point 8 extends.
Aremovable pin I is mounted transversely in the lower portion of the stem 1 and the upstanding socket 6 for removably securing the suction cup on said stem. A removable pressed ring H encircles the upstanding socket 6 for retaining the pin 10 in position.
It is thought that the operation of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing; Briefly, the suction cup 5 is engaged with the valve head 3 and collapsed thereon for operatively connecting the tool thereto. The point 8 is engaged in the recess 4 for centering the tool on the valve and for maintaining said tool in alignment therewith. To replace the suction cup 5, the ring H is slipped off the upstanding socket 6 for permitting withdrawal of the pin I0, after which said suction cup may be readily removed from the stem 1.
It is believed that the many advantages of a valve grinding tool constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the inventionas claimed.
What is claimed is:
A valve grinding tool of the character described comprising a collapsible suction cup for engagement with the head of a valve, a socket rising from the suction cup, an operating stem including an end portion extending into the socket and. the suction cup, a securing pin mounted diametrically in the stem and socket for removably securing the suction cup on the stem, a removable ring encircling the socket for retaining the pin therein, and a conical center point on the stem projecting into the suction cup for engagement with the valve head for centering the tool thereon; said cup being provided with a conical internal shoulder on which said "center point seats provided with an axial aperture through which said
