Description

INVENTOR [ow/N G. GAYNOR BY I I,
TT-ORNEY W I 2 4 4 w 2 5 3 l 2 b w -2 d e l \I n H E G GAYNOR ENCLOSURE FOR ALTERNATING CURRENT APPARATUS April 3, 1945.
Patented Apr. 3, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ENCLOSURE FoR ALTERNATING CURRENT APRABATUS Edwin G. Gaynor, Fairfield, Conn. Application February 13, 1942, Serial No. 430,762 6 Claims. (01. 175-361) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in reactors or chokes.
The objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein a satisfactory embodiment of the invention is shown. However, it is t be understood that the invention is not limited to the details disclosed but ineludes all such variations and modifications as fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing- Fig. 1 is a top plan view, with a part broken away, of the device of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken as along the plane of the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of an embodiment of the invention; and
Fig; 4 is a plan view of a small portion of the enclosure of the invention on a greatly enlarged scale.
Referring in detail reactor comprises a sealed unit made up of a body I ll of E-shaped laminations, a keeper II also of' laminated construction, a coil I2 about the intermediate leg of the body I0, and a box or casing I3 enclosing the laminated structures andthe coil. Casing I3 comprises a hollow body I4 open at its upper side and a. cover I5 also hollow and open at its underside. A pair of eyelets I6 in the top. wall of the cover I5 define openings through which pass leads I! soldered or otherwise connected with the coil I2. I
Casing body I4 and cover I5 are made of a mixture or composition including asbestos. Body I4 and cover I5 may be made by blanking them from a sheet and then folding the blank and connecting the edges of the side walls in any suitable manner providing a seamed construction. However the body and cover shown are of drawn construction and therefore seamless.
increased strength and by reason of the fact that the resulting container is solid or continuous with no scams or cracks of any kind.
In assembling the reactor of the invention the reactance unit comprising the laminated construction and the coil is assembled and secured together as by a U-shaped clamp I8 or the like. Then a plastic material, as pitch which melts at a high temperature as in the neighborhood of 375 F., is poured into the casing body I4. Thereafter while the pitch is molten the reactance unit is placed in the body I4 with the leads I! to the drawing my improved This is the preferred construction both by reason of the reeved through the eyelets I 5. Now the body I4 is filled with the pitch and the cover I5 is disposed over the upper side of the body and with its side walls I9 within the body after which the cover is pushed or forced into place with its side Walls I9 within and in telescoping relation with the side walls 20 of the body but at the outer sides of the reactance unit. When cover l5 does not have a tight fit some of the pitch is forced up between the side Walls of the cover and the side walls of the body.
When the pitch solidifies it secures the cover I5 to the body I4 and secures the reactance unit within the casing I3 and against any casual movement relative thereto. In the drawing the solid pitch is indicated by the reference character 2| and it i noted that the pitch completely fills the casing I3 about the reactance unit so that in effect a solid unit is made up and this unit is the complete reactor of the invention. Any suitable bracket or clamping structure may be used for mounting the improved reactor as, for example,
. a vU-shaped clip or strap.
In the reactor described the improved casing I3 being drawn of a mixture including asbestos has many advantages. This casing deadens the hum incidental to any alternating current reactance. In this connection it is noted that the bottom wall 22 of the casing body I4 is bulged inwardly and that the reactance unit is disposed substantially centrally with respect to said wall. Thus when the device of the invention is dis posed on a support as suggested as 23, the enclosure I3 rests on its edge portions 24 and the reactor unit is accordingly maintained spaced from the support whereby transmission of vibrations to the latter from the former is reduced or eliminated. Further the casing is fire proof and an electrical insulater. It has the property of insulating against outgoing heat generated in the coil I2 while the device is in use and the structure has peculiar properties in the matter of the dissipation of the heat generated within the unit.
With the present construction the casing insulates against outgoing heat in that the casing does not become excessively hot at one spot, that is in the immediate vicinity of the coil I2, but the heat generated at the coil is dissipated throughout the casing so there is no dangerous concentration of the heat at any one point. In addition the casing of the invention has a very large radiating surface so that the heat in addition to being dissipated throughout the casing is rapidly dissipated from the casing owing to the 2 r presence of such large radiating surface. This large radiating area is due to the fact that the surface of the casing is rough and not smooth as in the case of metal reactor casings. The fact that the surface of casing I3 is rough as suggested in Fig. 4 provides for a greatly increased area of radiating surface so that the heat generated by the coil 12 during use of the improved reactor is rapidly dissipated.
Fig. 4 suggests the roughness of the surface of the casing l3 and in such figure the asbestos fibres in the mixture from which the casing is formed are suggested at 25 and it is noted that the surface of the casing is not smooth and Slick but is rough and porous being made up of microscopic hills and valleys so that an extremely large surface area is available for the rapid dissipation of heat from the interior of the device.
Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what I claim is:
