EXTENSION BATH-TU B.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,196, dated February 1, 1881.

v To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, RAFAEL MARTINEZ and, JOHN PETRY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Extension Bath-Tub, of which the following is a specification.

The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved extension bath-tub which is simple in construction, occupies very little space, and can be very easily extended.

The invention consists in a bath-tub contained in a box, and provided with an extensible part, which can be drawn out to lengthen the tub when required, and pushed back when I 5 the tub is not in use, and with a pump for pumping the water from the tub into a bucket for removing it.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of our improved extension bath- 2o tub, showing it extended. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on line a: :0, Fig. 1, showing the sliding section contained within the rigid section. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line yy, Fig. 2.

The bath-tub consists of two sections, A and B, of which A is rigidly attached to the inside of a box, 0, provided with a lid, T, whereas the other section, B, is attached to the movable endE of the box 0, is provided with a coat ing of packing material, F, on its outer surface or along its inner edge, and fits exactly into the sectionA, so that it can slide forward and backward in this section A. The box 0 is supported by rollers Gr G, and the moving end E of the same is likewise supported by such rollers.

The upper edge of the movable section B is provided with a rack, H, and two pinions, Y, mounted on a transverse shaft, J, provided with a crank, I, engage with said racks, therebypermittin g the sliding section B to be drawn in or out of the section A by rotating the crank; or the two sections may be provided with any other desirable and suitable means for moving the sliding section in and out of the rigid section. 50 The box 0 is provided with a special com- (No model.)

partment, K, having a side door, L, and a lid, M, which compartment contains a box or shelf,

N, for soap, brushes, and similar articles, the drip-water of this shelf or box being conducted into the tub through the tube 0, provided with a plug, P. The compartment K also contains a pump, Q, connected with the rigid section A of the tub by means of a tube, It, for the purpose of pumping the water from the section A into a bucket or vessel placed below the spout S of the pump.

The pails or buckets for conveying the water to and from the tub are to be stored in the compartment K, or this compartment may be used to store any other articles that may be handy in a kitchen.

The lid T of the box 0 has a pocket, W, for the detachable crank I on the inner side, and the box has a series of handles, VV, for trans porting it. The sliding section A is guided and held by the overlapping flanged plates UU, attached to the upper edges of the box 0.

The operation is as follows: When not in use the bath-tub is in the position shown in Fig. 2; but if it isto be used the lidT is thrown open and the crank I is rotated from right to left, whereby the sliding section B is moved outward in the direction of the arrow a. Water is then poured into the tub up to the desired height, and all is ready for the So bath. The packing F will effectually prevent any leakage of the tub. After having taken the bath the water is pumped from the tub into suitable vessels by means of the pump, and then the crank I is rotated from left t085 right, whereby the sliding section B is drawn back into the rigid section A again.

The great advantage of the within-described bath-tub is that it is very handy for persons that have very littlespace to spare and could not manage to store an ordinary bath-tub.

Our improved lextension bath-tub does not occupy more space than an ordinary trunk, and besides this asmall compartment, K, for storing variousarticles is obtained. 95

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- .1. An extensionbath-tub made, substantially as herein shown and described, with a 10c sliding extensible part fitting into a rigid part, and provided with a water-tightjoint, as set forth.

2. In an extension bath-tub, the combination, with the rigid part A, of the sliding part B, the racks H H, the pinions Y Y, and shaft J, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

3. In an extension bath tub, the combination, with the rigid section A, of the sliding section B, the pump Q, and the connectingpipe R, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

4. The combination, with the box 0, of the rigid section A of an extension bath-tub, of I 5 the sliding section B, and of a compartment, K, for pails, 850., substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

5. In an extension bath-tub the box, (J, constructed, substantially as herein shown and described, with a movable end piece, E, that supports the outer end of the sliding section B, as set forth. RAFAEL MARTINEZ.
