Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. BRUMM, OF BOISE CITY, IDAHO TERRITORY.
BOOWK-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 237,163, dated February 1, 1881.
Application filed August 14, 1880. (Model) To all whom it may ooncemi Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BRUMM, of Boise City, in the county of Ada and Territory of Idaho, have invented a new and Improved Book-Protector, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a case for containing a book and securing it from injury, and to securely fasten said case and book to desk, pew, or other permanent object.
Figure l is a perspective View of a book inclosed within the case or protector and secured to some object. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of a book inclosed in the case. Fig. 3 is a reduced elevation, showing a book inclosed in the case and suspended from the back of a pew. 3'

The case'or frame A, inclosing the book B, consists of a solid back, a, having side hinges, on, and bent or curved to conform with the back of said book B and of the sides I) I), each of which is composed of a vertical strip, a; provided with hinges c c, of end strips, d d, that are folded over the ends of the book-cover B and over the ends of the strip 0, of an edge Strip, f, folded over the edge of the book-cover B and over the front ends of the strips 01 d, and of a central horizontal strip, g, that extends across the side of a book-cover, and has its ends secured upon the strips of, thereby holding the parts of the case or frame A together on the one side thereof and on the side of the book-cover B.
One side, I), of the case or frame A has a clamp, O, centrally hinged on its front strip, f, as shown, which clamp O is provided with a hole, h, that engages over a stud, k, which pro- 0 jects from the opposite strip, f, when the book B is closed, and thereby holds the said book B closed.
A stout wire, D, is bent around so as to form a central loop, m, above the top of the book B,and the ends of said wire D are passed down on either side through the hinges a," 0, thereby forming pintles n n for the sides I; b of the case or frame A to swing on.
A chain, E, covered with leather, cloth, or other flexible material, F, has one end attached to the loop m and its other end attached to the eye of an eyebolt, G, which eyebolt G is designed to be passed through the back of a pew or other object, as shown at H, and be secured therein by the nut G, which is countersunk in said object H and screwed onto the said eyebolt G.
Secured and protected with this device the book B can be handled easily and without noise, as the covering of the chain preventsit from rattling, and the light open frame or case inclosing the book does not materially add to the weight of the said book.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
11. A book-protector constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of curved back at, having hinges a, vertical strips 0, having hinges c, folded end strips, d, folded edge strips, f, central horizontal strips, g, hinging-wire D, having central loop, m, and pintles n a, covered chain E, and screw eye and nut G G, as set forth.
2. In a book-protector, and in combination therewith, the wire D, having central loop, m, and forming pintles n a, substantially as herein shown and described.
GEORGE W. BRUMM.
