a tool comprising a novel construction and arrangementfor expeditiously applying a hose.
clamp in the form of a metallic strap; without the necessity of using screws, bolts, wire or other extraneous elements.
Another Very important object of the invention is to provide a hose clamp applier which includes unique means for conveniently cutting off the metallic strap at the desired length after it has been drawn around the hose,
Other objects of the invention are to provide a tool of I the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliablein use, compact and which may be manufactured at low cost. I j
All of the foregoing'and still furtherobjects and advantages of the invention will become av,- parent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation, showing a hose clamp applying means embodying the present invention in use.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially on the line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view in front elevation, showing the swinging knife in positionto cut the metallic strap.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view, stantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a view in end elevation of the coupling with the clamp thereon, illustrating the taken sub- -method of securing the metallic strap after it has been cut oiT.
Figure 6 is a view in front elevation of the strap tightening and cutting device.
Figure '7 is an elevational view, looking atone side of the device shown in Figure 6.
Figure 8 is an elevational view, looking at the opposite side of the device shown in Figure 6.
Figure 9 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 9'9 of Figure 6.
Figure 10 -is a view in elevation of the strap winding key.
Figure 11 is an elevational view of the clamp applied to the hose.
Figure 12 is a view in and elevation of the coupling with the clamp thereon.
s Claims. (on 81-93) Figure 13 is across sectionalview, taken substantially on the line l3-,l3 oi -Figure l1,
Figure 14 is a detail-view in plan of one of. the coupling retaining clips. Figure 15 is a view-in endelevationof oneof the coupling retainingclips.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that referencenumeral -l designates a conventional hose coupling having one end por tion engaged in a hose 2. A clamp .13 firmly secures the couplin'gl in the hose ll. 7
The clamp 3 includeselips 4 in the form of metallic sheets of arcuate cross section which are mounted longitudinally on theendportion of the I hose 2. .At one end, ,theclips 4 terminate in.in; turned hooks 5 which are engaged with the usual flange B of the coupling 1 for positively retaining said coupling inthehose 2. a
Struck outwardly from the clip s 4 are longif tudinal. loops .1 providing slots, Bin said clips. The loops 1 and the. slots, 8 accommodate a metallic strap 9 which is wrapped tightlyaround the hose 2. for firmly securingthe clips 4thereon and for compressing said hose onthecoupling' 'll.
As best seen in Figure 13 of the'drawings', one end portion of the metallic strap 9 is inserted through the slot 8 of one of the clips 4 and bent back, as at l0. This strap is then passed beneath the other-clip 4, passed beneath the loops 1 of-both of the clips and the other end. portion thereof is again inserted beneath the loop of said one clip. The metallic strap 9 is then tightened,
the free or outer end portion, is cut off at the desired length and then bent back on the loop 1', of the adjacent clip 4, as at II. It will thus be seen that a clamp has been provided which will positively secure the coupling in the hose against leakage under exceedingly high pressure.
The clamp applier comprises a metallic hand lever 12 in the form of a fiat bar of suitable metal. At one end, the lever 12 terminates in a laterally curved, tapered hook which is formed to provide a rounded fulcrum or the like l3 which isadapted to bear on one of the clips 4 of the clamp 3. Ad-
jacent the fulcrum l3- the lever l2 has formed therein a transverse slot l4. The slot I4 is for pivoted end, the arm 16 is formed to provide a shearing blade IQ for severing the metallic strap 9 at the point where it emerges from the slot M.
A winding key or mandrel 20 is provided for tightening the metallic strap 9 about the hose 2. The winding key 20 includes a metallic shaft 2| having a longitudinal slot 22 in one end portion for the passage of the free end portion of the strap 9 for securing said strap to said shaft for winding thereon. on its other end, the shaft 2! is provided with an eye 23. A turning handle 24 is slidably mounted in the eye 23.
It is thought that the operation of the tool will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the clamp 3 is mounted on the hose 2 with the hook strap 9 is passed through the slot [4 in the lever l2 and inserted in the slot 22 of This is shown to advantage in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, The shaft 2! is then turned in a direction to wind the metallic strap 9 thereon. thus drawing said strap tightly around the hose 2. The knife I5 is then swung upwardly in the manner suggested in Figure 3 of the drawings for cutting off the metallic strap at the desired length, the shearing blade 19 coacting with the adjacent face of the metallic lever I '2. The lever I2 is then swung upwardly, the fulcrum l3 turning on the adjacent clip 4 of the clamp 3 for bending the outer end portion of the strap 9 back over the loop 1 of said clip. The lever I2 is then removed and the operation of clinching the outer end portion of the metallic strap 9 may, if necessary, be finished with a hammer or other suitable tool.
It is believed that the many advantages of a tool and clamp constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
5 engaged with the coupling 1 I and the free or outer end portion of the metallic the shaft 2!. s
What is claimed is:
1. Means for applying hose clamps of the type including a hose encircling strap, comprising a hand lever including a flat metallic bar terminating in a laterally curved end portion constituting a fulcrum engageable with the clamp, said lever having a slot therein adjacent the fulcrum for the passage of the strap, manually operable winding means cooperable with the lever for drawing the strap through the slot and for tightening said strap on the hose, and a knife pivotally mounted on the lever and having a blade movable across said slot parallel with said lever for severing the strap.
2. In a tool for applying hose clamps of the type including a hose encircling strap, a hand lever embodying a flat elongated metal bar having a transverse slot in one end thereof for the passage of an end portion of the strap and provided at that end with a laterally directed fulcrum member, a knife pivotally mounted on one face of the lever inwardly of said slot for swinging parallel with the plane of said lever, said knife including a shearing blade movable across said slot for severing the strap, and means engageabl with said end portion of the strap for 'tensioning the latter.
3. A tool for applying hose clamps of the type including a hose encircling strap, comprising a hand lever embodying a fiat elongated metal bar having a transverse slot in one end thereof for the passage of an end portion of the strap and provided at that end with a laterally directed fulcrum member, a knife pivotally mounted on one face of the lever inwardly of said slot for swinging parallel with the plane of said lever, said knife including a shearing blade movable across the slot for severing the strap, and means engageable with said end of and rotatable on an axis transversely of the lever for winding said strap to tighten the same on the hose.
