This invention relates to combined typewriting and accounting machines of the type in which the numbers are entered digit by digit in the register or registers.
In the operation of such machines, operators are often paid by the entry or line. When operators are paid on this basis, it is important to be able to obtain the total of the number of entries or lines without going through the tedious and laborious time-consuming operation of counting these from the finished work sheets.
One object of the present invention is to produce a counting device for machines of the above class which will count the entries made or lines typed on each work sheet as the sheets are typed.
Another object of the invention is to devise a counting device for counting the lines typed or entries made upon a machine of the above class which may be applied to existing machines with minimum changes in the structures of the machines.
With the above objects in view, the invention consists in a mechanism embodying the novel and improved features, constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims, the advantages of whichwill be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art.
The invention will be clearly understood from the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention' in its preferred form and the following detailed description ofthe constructions therein shown.

The invention is illustrated in this application s applied to a combined typewriting and accounting machine of the so-called Elliott Fisher type. The machine preferably has substantially the same general construction, arrangement and mode of operation of parts as the machine illustr-ated and described in the patent to Foothorap No. 1,904,127, dated April 18, 1933. The machine comprises a rectangular platen frame, one of thesidebars or rails of which i indicated at 2 and a substantially fiat platen indicated at 4 mounted for vertical movement in said frame. A line space frame, a portion of which is indicated at 5, is
mounted for forward and rearward movement on mounted a series of key levers, one of which is indicated at l8, for actuating the type bars (not shown) to engage the types with the work sheets resting on the surface of the flat platen 4. These key levers include certain numeral key levers which are arranged to control not only the impression ofthe numeral type on the work sheets, but also, under certain conditions, the actuation of certain register mechanisms to enter numbers in the registers.
The register actuating mechanism comprises a master wheel 20 mounted on the type or key carriage I2 and arranged to operate the accumulator mechanism of the column registers. The master wheel 20 may be actuated manually from the key levers through a differential mechanism such as that shown and described in the patent to Foothorap No. 1,576,760, dated March 16, 1926, or said wheel may be actuated by power operated mechanism controlled by the key levers such as that shown in the application of Oscar J. Sundstrand, Serial No. 281,772., filed June 29, 1939.
, As illustrated in this application, the machine is provided with a plurality of column registers indicated at 22 mounted on a supporting rail 24 carried by the uprights 25 of the line space frame. These registers are each clamped in fixed position on the rail :24 by means of the usual clamping device '28 actuated by aknurled hand wheel 30. The registers are each located in a definite position longitudinally of the rail 24 by means of a locating lever 32 arranged to engage in any one of a series of openings 34 in the rail.
Each of the registers illustrated has substantially the same construction and mode of operation of parts as the register illustrated and described in the patent to Foothorap No. 1,994,639,
dated March 19, 1935, although registers having any other suitable construction may be employed.
The accumulator mechanism of the register comprises a series of number wheels 36 connected by suitable idle gears 38 with the value Wheels 4!]. The number wheels 35 are arranged side by side upon the shaft 42 to represent the different denominations and the master wheel 20 is moved into and out of meshing engagement with the number wheels and is transferred from denomination to denomination thereof by the letter spacing movement of the carriage I2.
Each column register is provided with a transfer mechanism indicated generally at 44 and hav ing substantially the same construction as the transfer mechanism shown and described in Foothorap Patent No. 1,994,639, referred to above. The drawings show the transfer mechanism in its normal or untripped position. After being tripped by the entering of numbers in the resister during the advance movement of the type carriage, the transfer mechanism is reset duringthe return movement of the carriage to carry the master wheel past the register. The reset mechanism comprises a slide indicated at 45 mounted for forward and rearward movement on the base 48 of the register and connected with the transfer mechanism 44 by a restoring means such as illustrated and described in said Foothorap Pat- I is moved back to its forward position by the action of the coiled spring 54. This spring is attached to a gear segment 56 pivoted on a shaft 58 fixed at its ends in the side plates of the column register. The gear segment meshes with a gear 60 journaled on a shaft 62 also fixedat its ends in the side plates of the register and said gear meshes with gear teeth 64 formed on the upper side of the Slide 46.
' The. cam 52 is mounted on the usual cam lever 66 pivoted at 68 on the type head or carriage and is depressed below the slide 46 during the advance of the carriage to by-pass the slide.
When the carriage is advanced to carry master wheel 20 beyond the last denomination of the register, the cam lever 66 is swung upwardly to its normal position by the action of a suitable, spring. The position of the cam lever 66 is controlled by mechanism such as that disclosed in the patent toi"Foothorap No. 2,145,254, dated January 31, 1939. and in the co-pending application of Oscar J. Sundstrand, Serial No. 281,772. filed June 29, 1939. This mechanism will'be briefly described herein.
The cam 1ever'66 is provided with a slot which receives "the end of an arm on a lever I2 pivoted on the stud I4 on the type carriage. The lever [2 is acted upon by' a coiled spring I which tends to swing the same and the cam lever 66 upwardly and the upward movement of said leverscarriage into the zone of a register. The cam lever I8, in its downward movement, swings the lever 12 and thereby the cam lever 66 downwardly therewith by the engagement of an arm 84 formed on the cam lever with an eccentric stop 86 secured to the lever I2.
Thus, through the connections described, when the register engaging cam is depressed by the forward movement of the carriage to locate the master wheel on the type carriage in the zone of a register, the cam lever 66 is depressed below the reset slide 48 and will have no action on said slide during the advance movement of the carriage to carry the master wheel past the zone of the register. Upon the return of the carriage, however, the cam 80 on the lever I8 travels over the upper side of the plate 82 so that the cam lever 66 is not depressed and will act on the slide 46 to move the same rearwardly.
The counter for counting the return movements of the type carriage indicated at 88 is mounted on the left hand one of the two column registers as shown in Figs.- 1 and 2. The counter is of the kind or type in which the counter mechanism is operated by the oscillation of the main shaft of the counter and may have any'suitable construction to efiect this result. 'For example, the counter may have substantially the same construction as the counter illustrated and described in the patent to Veeder, No. 1,873,079, dated August 23, 1932. In Figs. 4 and 5 of this patent,.ls illustrated aconstruction in which the counter mechanism is actuated by the oscillation of an actuating lever mounted on the main shaft of the counter.
In the construction shown, the counter is provided with a base plate 90 fixed by suitable screws 9I to the upper portion of an attaching plate 92. This latter plate has an angular formation shown clearly in Fig. 1 and the lower portion thereof is secured by screws 94 to the rear wall 96 of the register. The upper portion of the attaching plate 92 is offset with relation to the lower portion thereof, as shown in Fig. 3. to enable cer tain parts of the operating mechanism to be aligned as will be later described.

position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 or in the position shown in dotted lines in said figure to locate the lever I I8 either in the full line or in the dotted line positionshown in said figure, the lever I22 'havinga rounded projection on one side thereof arranged to engage alternatively in the opposed recesses I32 and I 34 in a plate-like extension formed on bracket I26 to hold the lever respectively in said positions. The levers I08 and H8 are each given a complete oscillating movement during each rearward and forward movement of the slide 46 imparted to the slide during each return movement-of the carriage from a position in which the master wheel 20 is located to the right of the left hand register to a position in which the master wheel is located to the left of said register. With the lever. I22 adjusted in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the lever H8 is located in position to cause the pin I30 to engage the arm I during each oscillation of the lever and impart a corresponding oscillation to said arm and thereby actuate the counter mechanism to add one therein. The lever I I8 is adjusted in this position when it is desired to count each return movement of the carriage. When it is desired that the counter mechanism shall be rendered inoperative, the lever I I8 is located in the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1. With said lever in this position, the pin I30 is located in a position below the arm I00 so that said arm is out of range of the pin and the counter is not actuated by the oscillation of said lever.
In the operation of the mechanism, the operator, after making a numerical entry which may consist of an operation of the left hand counter alone or the right hand counter alone or both of said counters, returns the carriage to the left far enough to position the master wheel to the left of the left hand register or opposite the highest denomination of this register before starting another entry. During this movement the transfer reset slide 46 of the left hand counter is actuated to oscillate the levers I00 and H0 and, assuming that the lever H8 is adjusted in operative position, the arm I00 is oscillated correspondingly to enter the count of one unit in the counter.
The counter mechanism is entirely supported upon the left hand register 22 and may be removed from the machine by the removal of the register from the rail 24. It is often desirable to count the number of entries in a certain column of the work sheet and the present counter mechanism may be employed for this purpose. For example, if it is desired to count the number of debit items on a work sheet, the left hand register 22 is located on the rail 24 in position to register the entries in this column. With the register located in this position, after an entry has been made in the register, the return of the carriage will actuate the counting mechanism of the register to count this entry.
The register 22, having the counting mechanism supported thereon, may be adjusted to any position on the rail 24 so as to count the entries in any desired column of a work sheet.
The present mechanism may also be employed to count the lines on a work sheet even though theregister mechanism is then out of operation or is not used by the operator. After the carriage has moved sunlciently far to the right to carrythe master wheel 20 past the left hand register, the return of the carriage to the left far enough to actuate the transfer reset slide of the left hand register will actuate the counter mech-. anism to add one in the counter.
If, at any time, a line of work is undertaken in which it is not desired to count the lines of the work or the entries,the counter mechanism may be quickly and easily rendered inoperative by adjusting the lever I22 to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1.
The counting mechanism illustrated and described in this application may be applied to existing typewriting and accounting machines with very little change in the structure of said machines. .The supporting and operating mecha nism for the counter is comparatively simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
It is to be understood that, except as defined in the claims, the invention is not limited to the particular construction of the illustrated embodiment of the invention but that the invention may be embodied in other forms Within the scope of the claims.
Having explained the nature and object of the invention, and having specifically described a construction embodying the invention in its preferred form, what is claimed is:
1. A typewriting and accounting machine hav-- ing a column register, operating mechanism for the register, means for supporting the register and said operating mechanism for movement relatively in one direction to shift the operating mechanism into and out of the zone of the register and from denomination to denomination of the register and in the opposite direction to return relatively the same to starting position, a transfer mechanism for the register, a transfer reset slide operated by the relative return movement of the register andsaid operating mechanism, a lever oscillated by the slide, a second lever oscillated by said first lever, a counting mechanism for counting each relative movement of the register and the operating mechanism in one of said directions sufficient to carry the operating mechanism past the register, said counting mechanism being constructed and arranged to be operated by the oscillation of the second lever and a movable support for the second lever manually adjustable to move said lever into and out of operative position with relation to the counting mechanism.
2. A typewriting and accounting machine having a column register, operating mechanism for the register, means for supporting the operating mechanism and the register for relative movement in one direction to shift the operating mechanism into and out of the zone of a register and from denomination to denomination of the register and in the opposite direction to return relatively the same to starting position, transfer mechanism for the register, a transfer reset slide mounted for forward and rearward movement in the base of the register, and operated by the relative movement of the register and the operating mechanism in the latter direction, a counter mounted on the upper part of the register and having an oscillatable counting arm pivoted to swing ona horizontal axis, and. means for actuating said arm from the rear end of the slide comprising a lever V pivoted on a substantially horizontal axis on the rear part of the register and extending upwardly from the rear end of the slide, a connection between said lever and the slide for actuating the lever from the slide, a second lever pivoted on the register on asubstantlaily horizontelaxis at the rear of the registerand extending upwardly from said first lever, "a connection between the upper end of the first lever and the lower end of the second lever for oscillating the second lever, means on the upper end of the second lever-tor engaging said 'osbillatory arm, a member mounted on the register for supporting the pivotof the second lever, and means for mountinseidmember for'adjustment to-adjiist the second lever into and out of position to actuate said oscillatory arm 3.
