Description

Feb. 27, 1945. A ms 2,370,447.
.HEAD REST FOR BARBER C HAIRS Filed Sept. 2; 1943 INVENTOR.
y I ATTORNEY.
Patented I Feb. 27, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to a headrest for use on barbers chairs, and it aims to provide a novel construction whereby the headrest readily may be positioned or moved to a position out of the way but nevertheless always is attached to the chair.
In addition, I aim to provide a novel structure which is adjustable to accommodate the heads of children and adults and in which the headrest proper is carried by an arm capable of swinging from a lateral position to a vertical position, guided by the frame of the chair back, and in which frame the headrest structure as a whole is vertically adjustable.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment. 1
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a barbers chair equipped with my improvements;
Figure 2 is an enlarged front elevation of the frame of the back of such 'barbers chair;
Figure 3 is a/ horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; and 1 Figure 4 is a vertical section taken on the line 44 of Figure 2.
Referring specifically to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, a conventional barbers chair is shown at A. The back thereof which is preferably pivotally mounted and adjustable is shown generally at B. This back has a frame C of arched or inverted U-shape and is preferably of channel construction, with thechannel opening inwardly as shown.
For accommodating my improvements, said frame C has an elongated slot at l extending from approximately centrally of the top of the frame to a distance along one side thereof, as best shown in Figures 1 and 2.
A standard or bar is shown at 2, passing through the slot l and ascarrying a suitable headrest at 3.
passed through an elongated slot lil thereof which is disposed in registry with the slot 8.
As a result of the construction described, the headrest 3 and bar or standard 2 may be adjusted to any desired height upon loosening and tightening the bolt at 9, thus positioning the headrest for use by adults and children. In addition, when the headrest 3 is not being used, it may be disposed out of the way by swinging it to the A mounting bracket is shown having a'transverse bar 4 whose terminals 5 are arcuate and fitted in the channel of the frame C at the sides, preferably being welded thereto although the terminals may merely frictionally and expansively engage in such channels. The bracket 4 left as in Figure 2, on the axis of the bolt 9 which is properly loosened, the movement being accommodated by the length of the slot 1. Also, when desired, the standard 2 and the headrest may be removed completely by detaching them from the bar 6 upon removal of the bolt 9.
Various changes may be resorted to provided that they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination with a frame of a chair back or the like, a mounting bar spanning the same,
a bar at a right angle to the mounting bar attached thereto and to the frame, a headrest standard pivoted to the second-mentioned bar, said frame having a slot through which the standard passes and in which it is'movable on its pivotal axis.
2. In combination with the, frame of a chair back or the like, a mounting carried thereby, a headrest structure including a standard, means connecting the standard to the mounting for pivotal movement thereon, said frame having a slot through which the standard. passes and moves on its pivotal axis. v
3. In combination with' the frame of a chair back or the like, a mounting carried thereby, a headrest structure including a standard, means connecting the standard to the mounting for pivotal movement thereon, said frame having a slot through which the standard passes and moves on its pivotal axis, said mounting having a bracket transversely disposed and provided with terminals engaged with the frame.
4. In combination with the frame of a chair back or the like, a mounting carried. thereby, a headrest structure including a standard, means connecting the standard to the mounting for pivotal movement thereon, said frame having a slot through which the standard passes and moves on its pivotal axis, said mounting having a bracket transversely disposed and provided with terminals engaged with the frame, said mounting having a central bar, said central bar and standard having .registering slots, and fastening means passing adjustably through said slots.
