Bailar, Menasha, Wis., assignor to 'Marathon Corporation, a corporation of Wisconsin Application July 21, 1944, SerialNo. 545,923 1 claim'. (c1. 1229-30) This invention relates to a tray for supporting articles. More speciilcally, this invention relates to supporting a tray made from a single blank of cardboard and the like that can be shipped in flat collapsed condition and which is adapted to be readily. set up for use.
Further advantages and features of the invention will be apparent from the following speciy ficatlon and drawings, wherein, l
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package of bakery rolls supported on a tray made according to the present invention and completely wrapped in a transparent wrapper, i'
Figure 2 is a plan View of the package illustrated in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on lines 3-3 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a plan view of an elongated cardboard blank from which the tray of the present invention is constructed,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the tray in set-up condition, and
Figure 6 is a plan View tray as shipped to the user.
Referring to the drawings, the tray is preferof the fiat collapsed condition as illustrated in Figure 5. The article supporting panels I6 are then folded inwardly of the tray toward each other on their hinge lines to assume the position illustrated in Figures 3 and 5. In this position any suitable articles. such as bakery rolls 30, can be positioned and supported on the extended supporting panels I6. It will be noted as shown in Figure 3 that the outer free edges of panels I6 terminate short of each other so as to permit air to circulate beneath the articles supported by panels 30. The rectangular openings in the side Walls II and I3. formed by folding panels I6 inwardly also serve to permit air circulation about the sides of the articles supported in the tray. This is an im-V portant feature of the present invention when bakery goods -such as rolls, doughnuts and cakes are packaged in the tray in order to prevent them from becoming soggy. A transparent wrapper 2 20 of Cellophane and the like is preferably ably made from Aan elongated `relatively narrow p blank of cardboard of suitable caliper, as illustratqi in Figure 4, which is scored along lines I, 2, 3, and 4 to provide opposed end walls I 0 and I2, opposed side walls II and I3, and a glue panel I4. Side walls II and I 3 are provided with article supporting panels I6 which are formed by a slit or cut line 5 extending in parallel relation to the bottom edge of the panels Il and I3, and slit or cut lines 8 intersecting thecut lines 5 at each end thereof and terminating at the ends of hinge line formed of alternate creased score lines 8 and cut score lines l.
In forming the tray from the blank described previously, glue panel I4 is folded along score line l into face contact with panel I3. Adhesive is then applied to the margin I5 of panel I0. The blank is then folded back on itself along score line 3 as illustrated in Figure 6. so as to bring glue panel into contact with adhesive I5 on panel I0 thereby forming a rectangular sleeve. 'I'he sleeve so formed is shipped in this flat condition to the consumer.
said side walls, said panel portions being formed pended claim rather than'to the foregoing def/ scription to indicate the scope of the invention.
Iclaim: A tray for supporting articles formed of a elongated integral blank, the ends of said blank being partially overlapped and fastened together to form a rectangular band, said blank being 0 provided with score lines to form opposed end walls and elongated side Walls, said side walls being provided with panel portions folded inwardly toward each other on a hinge line extending in parallel relation to the bottom edge of bv a cut line extending in spaced parallel relation to the said hinge line and cut lines extending downwardly from the ends of said cut line at right angles thereto and terminating at the said hinge line, said panel portions being adapted to assume a position for supporting articles thereon.
