UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GEORGE A. CHASE, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
TRUMPET FOR CARDlNG-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,777, dated January 18, 1881. Application led March 29, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE A. CHASE, of the city of Lowell, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusets, have invented a new and useful Trumpet for Cardin g-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
`My invention relates to the device by which .the carded cotton or other ber passing from the card in a sliver is gathered together into a roping, to be lapped with that from other cards; and the object of my invention is to provide a trumpet which will permit any loose dirt, leaf, or foreign material to drop away from the sliver before it is gathered together into a roping. I accomplish this object by the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in whichi Figure l is an elevation of a card with my device in position. Fig. 2 is a section of the same. .i
A is the dofer-cylinder of the card, which takes the ber from the card-cylinder.
B is a portion of the frame of the card.
C is the doffer-comb, which takes the ber off the doffer-cylinder. This comb is placed on arm s c,wl1ich are attached to the rock-sh aft c.
D D represent a pair of calender-rolls, between which the ber, after being taken from the doft'er-cylinder, is carried. One of these is driven by the shaft d, and the other moves by frictional contact. These rolls are sustained in position by the bracket d2.
E is the trumpet, into which the ber taken by the comb from the dofting-cylinder falls in a thin sheet or lm. The function of this trumpet is to gather this sheet together into a narrow band or roping, so that it may pass between the calender-rolls and be condensed to such a degree that it may be lapped with and afterward worked with other roping into roving. At eis a hole in the trumpet, out through which the cotton falling into it passes, being continually drawn by the rolls D.
All these parts are arranged and operate in the usual well-known manner, and the moving parts are driven by the usual belts and gears, which are not therefore shown.
My improved device does not in any way alter the operation of the parts described, but consists in making the trumpet of perforated metal or wire-netting, so that any dirt, leaf, or foreign matter which may have passed into the card with the ber which may be loosened by the action of the card will drop outthrough the openings in the trumpet, instead ot' being gathered with the ber into the roping as it passes out through the hole at the bottom of the trumpet to the rolls.
What I claim as new and of my invention 1sl. A trumpet for a carding-machine having openings through which foreign substances may drop, substantially as described.
2. As anewarticle of manufacture, atrumpet for a cardingmachine made of perforated metal or wire-netting, substantially as described.
GEORGE A. CHASE.
