SLEEVE-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,746, dated January 18, 1881.

To all'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUrs A. WILLEMIN, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sleeve-Buttons;
and I declare the following to be a specication thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to separable buttons;
and itconsists in providin ga bell-shaped lining having an eXpansible rim which is so constructed as to be capable of being spread out by means of a proper die, so that the lateral pressure of its edges against the inner surface 2o ofthe ange of the button-front will hold the said lining permanently in position, and thus furnish a suitable inclosed space for the operative parts of the button-fastening, which are arranged as hereinafter more fully set forth.
The front of the button A is made with a ange, a.. A rubber or other spring, B, has a bearing against the inner surface of the button-front, and also a bearin g against the plate 3o O. The bell-shaped lining D has a central aperture, b, and a convex or beveled ange or rim, c. Through the aperture b the tube E is to be inserted, having a flange, d, and a central longitudinal slot, e e, the shape of which 3 5 appears in Fig. 3. The post F is fastened, as
usual, to the shoe G, and has lugs ff.
The parts of my button-front are secured together without soldering. I insert the tube E through the aperture b of the lining D. By
4o proper dies I spread outwardlythe inner edge of the tube E, so that it is turned over and upon the inner surface of the lining D, as shown in Fig. 1, and is securely held in place. Slots g g are made upon said inner turned edge of the tube E at right angles to the line of the slots e e. The plate C and spring B are laid loosely in position and covered by the bell-shaped lining D. The diameter of the lining D is somewhat less than the inner diameter of the button-front A. I flatten 5o down the rim c by a suitable die. This eX- pands the rim outwardly and increases the diameter. The edge of the rim c all around is thus forcibly pressed in a lateral direction against the inner surface of the flange a of the button-front A, holding the lining firmly in place without soldering. The button-front thus constructed appears in Fig. 3.
To unite the back and front of this separable button I insert the post F within the tube E, 6o the lugs f f entering through the slots c c. I press the post against the plate C, which movement depresses the spring B, making a space for the lugs to travel in as I turn the post a quarter-revolution. When the lugs ff come opposite the interior slots, g g, they lock into said slots and are there confined by the normal pressure of the spring B. To separate the button I make the same movement in areverse direction. By this mode of fastening the 7o lining to the button-front I avoid the labor and cost of soldering the parts together, as has been necessary hitherto.
It is evident that this method of lining buttons by the lateral pressure of a convex or beveled lining spread or flattened by dies is adapted equally as well to breastpins and other articles of jewelry as to sleeve-buttons.
I claim as a novel and useful invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 8o l. Thelining D, having an eXpansible rim,
c, in combination with the ilanged buttonfront A and slotted tube E, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The separable button herein described, consisting of a button-front, A, spring B, plate C, lining D, tube E, having slots 66g g, post F, having lugsj'f, and shoe G, combined and operating substantially as specified.
