caused to drop in reverse positions, so that the pictures on opposite sides can all be exhibited or viewed, but will be covered and unexposed in one position and uncovered and exposed in another position without requiring individual grasping and independent swinging and folding of the various pictures or post cards in order to present the same to view.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a photograph, picture or post card album of the foldable type which can be produced from two strips of single or double ply material fastened together at one end of each strip and having a plurality of picture carrying sheets foldable one on another in a novel manner and so arranged that by reversing the position of the top carrying sheet or a cover provided thereon, the album will unfold in opposite directions to expose opposite sides or faces of the carrying sheets to exhibit and expose to view the photographs or pictures thereon. Also, the strips may be continuous or independent single or double ply cards or sheets hinged together in foldable relation by independent tapes, so that a comparatively inexpensive or a more expensive and high-class product may be produced so as to come within the range of purchase of everyone, and in either instance produce a device which can be economically manufactured in large numbers and assembled with facility but which will be strong, substantial and not likely to get out of working order.

Further objects and advantages will appear and be brought out more fully in the following speci fication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawings and especially the forms shown in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, the picture or photograph album or folder is shown as comprising a strip or elongated blank 20 of relatively stiff material, such as pasteboard, fibreboard, cardboard, clothboard or other relatively. stiff material of any suitable length desired and shown of rectangular form and uniform width with parallel marginal or longitudinal edges 2| and ends 22 and 22a. The strip is divided into a plurality of alternately arranged spaced photograph or picture carrying portions, members, sections or sheets 23 of such lengths and widths to correspond with but slight- 1y wider than the sizes of the photographs, pictures or post cards to be carried thereby or fastened thereto. This is the relatively wide strip and has narrow margins 24 along its opposite longitudinal edges at the sections or portions 2.3 while the alternate portions therebetween are connected by marginal narrow connections 25 integral therewith or attached thereto and adapted to fold transversely where the ends of the marginal connections 25 join the portions 23 as indi cated by the scored lines 26. The marginal connections 25 may be formed by cutting out alternate portions of the strip 20 to form openings 2'1 within the marginal connections 25 so that the openings are narrower than the strip 20 forming the blank and lie substantially within the margins 24. The narrow strip is indicated at 28 and is less than or corresponds in width to the openings 21 and central sections 23, which is the same as the distance between the margins 2% but like the strip 20 also has its opposite edges 29 parallel as well as the ends 30 and 3| so that the strip or blank forming the same is not only elongated but narrower than the strip 20 but is also of rectangular outline, though this may be varied as desired together with the shape of the foldable portions 23 and the openings 27 of the strip 20. As shown, the strip 28 has alternate rectangular portions 32 and 33 foldable transversely along the scored lines 34. In assembling these strips one end portion of the strip 28, such as the portion 32 is laid across one end of the strip 20 at the portion 23 coextensively and in line but extending in opposite directions so that one end 30 will terminate at the adjacent end of an opening 21 and one end of the strip 20 such as the end 22 will terminate at the inner end of the first section or portion 32 and the corresponding scored or hinged'line 34 as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 and the meeting faces fastened together by adhesive as shown at 35 or by clips or other fastening means 36 as shown in Fig. 3

By folding the upper member downwardly toward one side as shown in Fig. 5, the member in front thereof is left free to drop from the solid line position as shown in said figure as shown on dotted lines and in this way the ones therebeneath alternately on opposite sides will fall by gravity so that whereas an ordinary album will accommodate 12 pictures, a corresponding length of the present structure will accommodate and exhibit 21 pictures which with one on the front of the cover will make 22 pictures in all or substantially twice as many as with the ordinary folder. On the other hand, by folding the upper picture carrying member back to its original position the entire arrangement will be reversed and the alternate carrying members on the opposite sides will be free to drop in alternate opposite staggered relation to the ones which previously dropped thus exhibiting all of the pictures. Owing to the fact that the carrying members progressively and successively drop one at a time from the top to the bottom instead of all at one time, the stresses on the connections are reduced Whereas with the old construction the entire weight is placed on the connections since they all drop at the same time or simultaneously instead of intermittently and this prevents tearing or destruction thereof.

In the form of invention shown in Figs. 7 to 17 inclusive, instead of the folder being made of two single sheet strips which of course may be any number of plies, and forming the openings 21 in one strip to produce the portions or sections 23 in spaced relation with correspondingly related openings receiving the narrow portions 32 and 33 of the other strip and the marginal connections 25 forming the tapes or hinged connections between the sections 23, the sections are made up of one or more sheets but shown as two plies 4?. There ar narrow sections 48 and wide sections 49 each in the form of a rectangular sheet or card independent of the other. One of the carrying members or sections, preferably a wide member is disposed at the top and may be pasted or otherwise secured to the back or inner face of the front portion 38 of the cover 37 so as to firmly anchor the same thereto. Between the plies 41 or along the edges of the sheets, flexible tapes or strips 50 are secured by adhesive or otherwise, and may completely join the sheets together, along the marginal edges thereof. These tapes while preferably inelastic such as ribbon may be gummed or formed of other suitable material and anchored throughout the length of the sections or carrying member or between the plies thereof or only part of the length thereof and are turned downwardly from the top edge as indicated at to form hinged connections at such points. These tapes extend along the marginal edges at the front face of the wide upper carrying member 49 and at their bottom edges connect to the adjacent edge of the next wide carrying member 49 as indicated at 52 and extend lengthwise along the marginal edges thereof between the plies composing the same and to which they are secured by reason of the plies being adhesively secured together or otherwise fastened. This arrangement of the tapes is then repeated throughout the length of the hinged strips formed by the sections or carrying members. In addition, inner lengthwise or transverse tapes 53 are also secured along the ends or between the plies 41 inwardly of the aforesaid tapes or ribbons in the same manner as previously described but spaced from the opposite longitudinal edges of the wide sections or card carrying members 49. They then extend in parallel relation to form hinged connections between the adjacent ends of the sections or member 48 and 49 as at 5A with the narrow members 48 and are correspondingly fastened between the plies thereof to extend entirely through the same, that is throughout the lengths thereof and in a straight line from the upper wide member. At the lower end of this narrow member the tapes 53 are turned upwardly and back as at 55 to connect with and extend through the narrow section 48 in back which has its upper end connected to the top edge of the wide section 49 therebetween to make exit at the bottom of certain wide sections for connection with the narrow section in front. Th lower end of the narrow section in back is connected in a similar manner with and through the wide sec tion therebeneath so that the inner tapes 53 form hinged connections between all of the carrying members and the tapes 5!) are alternately connected to the wide members between the plies thereof and loosely span or extend freely along one face of the next wide section therebeneath so as to be alternately turned or bent over from the top at one side of one wide section and from the bottom at the other side of the adjacent wide section with a narrow section therebetween so as to shift the hinged connections merely by folding the cover or the upper picture carrying member the same as in the form previously described so that the carrying members which are loose at the top and which have their hinged connections transferred from the top to the bottom will automatically flop-over and swing downwardly to reverse the positions of the carrying members in alternate opposite staggered relation to exhibit the entire series of pictures arranged on the carrying members the same as previously described. The pictures are designated at 56 in Fig. 13 of the drawings and held in the corner members, slits or clips 5'! between or within the Widely spaced tapes 5D. In this way, when the device is suspended as shown in Figs. '7 and 8 only the alternate free portions of the tapes 59 are exposed in staggered relation or alternately on opposite sides of the folder strip constituted by the hinged or pivotally connected ends of the carrier members or sections thereof. The free tapes on the opposite side are correspondingly arranged except that they are alternately arranged with respect to the others, being bent at the bottom instead of at the top and extending straight at the top instead of at the bottom. Thus, by reversing the position of the cover and the upper carrying member as shown in Fig. 8 of the draw ings the opposite alternate carrying member are released to transfer the hinges thereof from the top to the bottom so that they are loose at the top and will drop or swing downwardly as shown in Figs. 9 and 13 of the drawings to exhibit the pictures on the alternate opposite sides of the carrying members whereby they may all be easily and conveniently viewed by the simple manipulation of the cover or top carrying member caused by folding it over and downwardly or upwardly .fromwhich-itmill lbe noted that in each alternate ,position there, t-is a sing-1e -wide,carrying member and in alternate positions. therebetween,there is ;an; intermediate *wide carrying .member- 49 and .narrow carrying .members 48 on opposite sides i thcreof-.' -By reversing the position of the upper carryingmember-with or -lwithout the folder providedthereon .andwthus also the folder if -so .provided, the hinged connection of- .theupper narrow memoer 1S ,transferredfrom thelbottom to thetop and is held againstwthe upper ,wide member as ,shown inEig. 1510f :the drawings withthe-alter- -.nate carrying =members therebetween' arranged singly as widemembers and the alternatemem- .bers, .therebetween wide, with and intermediately of narrowmembers .on each-Side thereof in, staggered ,or oppositeand different relation .to the previous, arrangement and relation of parts as as they usually are of -.;black;orsof a .color tocorrespond; with the .colorof the .carrying members.

However, the inner tapes as well as the outer tapes are all parallel and form hinged connections between the adjacent meeting ends of alternatively positioned wide and narrow carrying members and between the ends of spaced wide members so that when joined together they form substantially two strips one of which is wider than the other, that is a wide strip and a narrow strip which permits the reversal of the positions of the carrying members in suspended positions once they have. been dropped from the cover, merely by reversing the position or folding the coveror upper carrying member over as shown.

It will thus be seen that the device as shown in either form comprises alternate wide and narrow picture carrying sections or members hinged together across their meeting ends, the narrow sections being hinged at each end to the adjacent ends of wide sections and the loose connections extending between corresponding or retapes then run through the wide members or are mote ends of intermediate wide sections alter- 'nating with the narrow sections disposed thereagainst. Instead of having alternate portions or faces of strips secured together the ends may be hinged in any known fashion by narrow transverse strips or otherwise so long as they can fold on one another and this may be done by means of transverse strips using Scotch tape or otherwise terminating at the opposite longitudinal edges of the wide and narrow sections tions run along said edges to form bindings and instead of being dsposed between plies or formed integral with the sections, such longitudinal marginal portions may be folded over the edges to form bindings and merely fastened together double between opposite ends of the wide sections where they form loose connections or marginal strips forming openings between which the narrow sections pass. In other words the marginal strips or tapes may be formed in any suitable manner separate from the sections and the ends of the alternate narrow and wide sections hinged together in any suitable way to permit them to fold and swing downwardly in the manner shown and described.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into e'flfect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variation and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A picture album of the character described comprising a wide strip consisting of a plurality of contiguous sections with alternate sections solid, and the other alternate sections formed with openings, and a narrow strip also consisting of a plurality of contiguous sections, said strips being arranged with the narrow strip passing through said openings in the wide strip and having spaced apart sections thereof secured to the sold sections on one side of said wide strip, and with the attached sections of said narrow strip being doubled back on unattached sections of said narrow strip.

2. A picture album of the character described comprising a wide strip consisting of a plurality of contiguous rectangular sections hingedly connected together with alternate sections solid, and the other alternate sections formed with rectangular openings, and a narrow strip joined at one end to said wide strip and also consisting of a plurality of contiguous rectangular sections hingedly connected together, said strips being arranged with the narrow strip passing through said rectangular openings in the wide strip and having spaced apart sections thereof secured to the solid sections on one side of said wide strip, and with the attached sections of said narrow strip doubled back on unattached sections of said narrow strip.

3. A picture album of the character described, comprising a wide strip made up of a plurality of contiguous sections with alternate sections solid and the other. alternate sections formed with openings, a hinge connection at each of the opposite edges of each section hingedly connecting that section with the next adjacent sections, and a narrow strip of substantially the same width as said openings joined at one end to said wide strip and also consisting of a pluralit of contiguous sections, there being a hinge connection at each of opposite edges of each section hingedly connecting that section with the next adjacent sections, said strips being arranged with said narrow strip passing through sad openings in said wide strip and having spaced apart sections secured to the solid sections on one side of said wide strip, and with the attached sections of said narrow strip doubled back on the unattached sections of said narrow strip.

4. A picture album of the character described, comprising a wide strip made up of rectangular solid sections, each of which is joined to the next adjacent solid section byv marginal connections defining openings, and a narrow strip joined at one end of said wide strip and consisting of a plurality of contiguous sections, said strips being arranged with the narrow strip passing through said openings in the wide strip and having spaced apart sections secured to said solid sections on one side of said wide strip and with the attached sections of said narrow strip doubled back on unattached sections of said narrow-strip.
