('01. 222-555) This inventionrelates to improvements incontainers and more particularly to improvements in closures of the dispensing or siftertype adapted for dispensing free flowing material, such as toilet or other powders. The improved closure has been particularly designed so that it may be conveniently constructed entirely of non-metallic materials, thus to conserve metallic materials that are vitally needed at this time for national defense. At the same time a high degree of antisift properties have been maintained. The closure has been especially designed, furthermora so as to be capable of production in large quantities by factory methods at low cost. Thusthe improved closureQtogether with the entire container, is especially designed so as to be constructed of fibrous materials, such as, cardboard, fiberboard, pulp, wood, or from the various plastic materials. 6
It is a general object of the invention to provide a closure of the class mentioned that can be made of non-metallic materials, quickly and easily assembled in manufacture, and at the same time provide a tight anti-sift joint that is readily adjustable to maintaintightness so as to prevent escape or sifting of the container contents when the closure is in closed position:
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved adjustable friction holding device for holding the closure parts in tight closing position, and embodying a friction dowel or dowel pin frictionally engaging in an aperture in the top or cap of the container, thus making it easy tomaintain the closure elements in tight anti-sift condition during long periods of usage, while at the same time providing for easy operation of the closure member into closing or opening positions and for holding it there. r f l Still another object of the invention is to provide an improved closure of the class mentioned adapted for economical manufacture by factory methods in large quantity production, wholly from non-metallic materials and at the same time as-'- suring a practica1 closure that iseasily handled and operated and capable of maintaining nonleak qualities over long periods of use.

Referring to the drawing for a detailed description of the illustrative embodiments of the invention there shown, the container or powder can 5 may be of any desired size and shape but 'is preferably constructed of non-metallic material, such as paper, cardboard, fiberboard, and the like, and has an interior compartment for receiving the powder or other material. The container has an opening at its upper end which is 6 closed by a head or upper wall 6 having a downwardly extending circumferential attaching flange 1 adapted to fit tightly within the upper walls of. the container 5. The head or cap 6 is preferably formed with an outer circumferential flange 8 forming a seat against which the upper end of the container wall 5rests. At its outer surface the attaching flange I is preferably formed with a circumferential bead 9 extending entirely around the flange and engaging the inner surface of the container wall 5. This bead 9 is so constructed and arranged as to extend or bite slightly into the inner wall surface, thus holding the head in assembled relation and at the same time making a tight anti-siftjo-int. By means of this arrangement the head Bis easily assembled with the body 5 of the container so as to make a permanent tight joint. It i obvious that a different attaching means may be provided for the head 6, and, if desired, the head may be made as an integral part of the body of the container 5. l
In the embodiment shown in the drawing the container closure is assembledupon the container head 6 which is preferably made of wood, fiberboard, plastic material, or other non-metallic material. As it is also of considerable diameter, as shown, it thus has a sufiiciently large peripheral surface whereby it functions to frictionally engage with the inner frictional surface presented by the retaining aperture I2 to retain the parts securely in assembled relation. Since the dowel pin extends through the central retaining opening of .the rotary closure disk I3, it serves as a pivotal support upon which the closure disk rotates. The rotary closure disk'is sufficiently loose upon the pivotal sup- :port .or dowel I8 to permit free rotary movement of the disk into opening and closing positions.
