9 Claims.
This invention relates to registering devices for severing labels or the-like incorrect registration with printin or other indicia thereon. The present invention is a division of our prior application Serial No. 384,374, filed March 20, 1941.
It is one object of the invention to provide a registering apparatus of simple construction and low cost, which is for this reason capable of application to wrapping and labeling apparatus of a wide variety of types. lA-further object is to improve the ,positiveness with which the web is stopped for severance. Additional objects will appear from thefollowing description and claims.
Referring to the. drawings,
Fig. l is a vertical section through a web feeding and registering apparatus in accordance with the invention, taken on line I--l of Fig. 3;
Fig. 2 is similar section on line 2--.2 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 3 is a 'top plan of the apparatus;
Fig. 4 is a detail "showing the condition of the "apparatus just before registration;
Fig. 5 is a detail showing the'relation of the web and feeler at the same period as Fig. .4;
Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the act of registration; and
Fig. '7 is a similar view showing the release of the feed lock preliminary 'to the initiation of a fresh feeding movement. The machine is driven from a shaft 28 which receives motion from any'suitable source. A web is supplied as from a suitable reel (not shown) and passes between plates 56, the function of which will appear later, and over a roll 51 which, when adjusted, remains in a fixed position. After leaving roll 51 the web passes between a driven roll 6| ,and a mating roll 62 carried on a swinging frame 63 pivoted on the machine at 64 and pressed towards the roll Si by a tension spring 65. The rolls are preferably recessed at intervals as at 66 (Fig. 3) and are geared together at 61, 68, the latter of these gears meshing with a gear 69 to which are secured a driving ratchet l0 and a holding ratchet l I.
The rolls are driven by an oscillating pawl carried upon a member 16 free to swing about the shaft 11 upon which the ratchets l0 and TI and the gear 69 are mounted. To this member 16 is pivoted at 13 a link l9 pivoted at B0 to an arm 8| swinging on a, shaft 82. A cam roll 83 on the arm Si is held by a spring 84 against a cam 85 on the shaft 28 previousl mentioned. The cam oscillates the pawl 15 in each cycle through such an are as to rotate the feed rolls sufiiciently to project the web upwardly beyond the rolls the length of one label; A pawl 86 swinging on a stationary pivot 81 engages the feeding ratchet 10 to prevent retrograde movement of the feed rolls.
As the web rises above the feed rolls it passes between guide members 90, lying in the grooves 66, to direct it between a stationary cutter bar 9i and a movable cutter blade 92. The latter is pivoted at 93 to a rocker 94 winging on a stationary pivot 95 and having an extension 96 bearing a cam roll 97. A cam 98 on shaft 28 causes periodic motion of the cutter to sever a blank from the web.
To keep the labels in constant registration with the cutting mechanism, so that the labels will be severed on the correct line with respect to the printing which they bear, they are preferably provided with perforations or notched edges through which may pass a pin I reciprocable through aligned holes ['61 in the guide plate '56 (see Fig. 2). The pin is carried on an, arm I62 filed on a cross shaft I63. This shaft also carries arm lS (Fig. l) drawn by a spring I to keep its end in engagement with an adjustable segmental cam 166 on the pawl carrier 16 which drives the label feed rolls 5!, .62. The arm I64 also carries a multiple toothed pawl I61 or sprag which; when the arm 164 is permitted to rock by the passage of the pin through the web, grasps the holding ratchet as in Fig. 6 and stops further movement of the pawl carrier, which is "driven only "by the spring '84. The cam, which is adjustably mounted on the pawl carrier by a bolt and slot connection I68, is set so as to hold the pawl I61 out of contact with the holding ratchet during the initial feeding of the label web, and to release the arm I64 to permit the pin I60 to rest on the web as the feeding motion approaches its end. When the pin finally drops into the hole in the paper the feed will stop instantly.
