propelling chain D and forming pivotal attachment thereto. The chain comprises a series of links D. pivotally connected to each other by pins E which latter extend beyond the links at oppo site ends for engagement with the lugs of the bars.

The lugs C have formed therein angular or bayonet slots F open at the bottom and having the horizontal portion F thereof extending forwardly, These slots areof a width to receive projecting end portions of the pivot pins E and after said pins pass upward therein, arearward movement of the bar A will engage them with the portion F of the slot. In a traveling grate; the combination with a series of adjacent grate bars and a propelling chain therefor extending transversely and intermediate the ends thereof, said chain being formed of a series of links, and pivot pins connecting said links, of means for detachably connecting each of said grate bars to said chain comprising 0pposite end extensions of a pivot pin, spaced lugs depending from said bar and embracing a link of said chain, each lug being provided with a bearing for receiving the forward thrust of said pin and having an entrance slot extending rearward and downward therefrom, means for holding said pin against endwise movement in said lugs, and a washer detachablymounted on said pin having a projecting lug engaging the entrance slot of an adjacent depending lug to hold the pin from disengagement from the bearing.

In a travelinggrate, the combination with a series of adjacent grate bars and a propeller 1 chain therefor formed of a series of links, of pivot pins connecting said links eachof uniform diameter throughout its length and being of a length greater than the width of said links, one of each pair of links being provided with a radially extending recess therein, a smaller pin projecting laterally from each of th aforesaid pins links of said chain, each of said lugs being provided with a bearing for receiving the forward thrust of said pivot pin and having an entrance slot extending rearward and downward therefrom a washer sleeved upon an end portion of each of said pivot pins and provided with a lug for engaging said entrance slot of the adjacent depending lug to hold the pin from disengage ment from said'bearing, and a" cotter pin for holding said washer from disengagement. a
