Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUSSEL VVILDMAN, OF DANBURY, CIMYNECTICUL.
BRICK-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,634, dated April 12, 1859.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSSEL VILDMAN, of Danbury, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brick-Machines; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear7 and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a longitudinal elevation.
The letters in both figures refer to like parts.
The triangular frame a L a supports the machine. The frame a is inclined that the arm B may stand perpendicular when the mold m is filled and discharged. The arm B has an arbor through the bottom which passes through the journal boxes z' i into the frame. The arm B has a hollow shaft, and in oblong head CZ upon the top, divided by two apertures at right angles. The mold m is fitted to slide over the head CZ and rest upon two springs c e. The mold m extends suliiciently above the head Z to receive the material for a block. The center s which forms the hollow in the brick is connected to the mold m through one of the apertures in the head d below the discharge plate Through. the other aperture in the head Z the rod r connects with the discharge plate a, and passing through the hollow shaft is connected with lever g/ near the bottom of shaft B. The lever y is fulcrumed in the post t. A hinge at e admits the post t to conform to the vibrating arm B. Through each spring e c there is a bolt 7L which regulates the expansion of the springs.
The cap j that covers the mold m when the arms B and C are closed is attached to arm c by two rods p p which is secured to the upper side of cap j, and passing through a fianch f, which is attached to arm C. Above lianch f and around the rods 70 7) are spiral springs which hold cap j firmly to arm C, the end of the arm moving in a socket upon the top of cap j when the arms B and C are closed. Through flanch f is a set screw g which regulates the angle of cap y', that it may close smoothly upon the mold m. Upon the underside of cap j is a molding a. The mold m when brought under cap y', closes against molding u, thereby locking the arms B and C firmly together and producing thereby the toggle oint.
Through the top of arm C is an arbor which passes through the journal boxes i 71 into the frame. From the top arm C extends a lever supporting weight fw which counterbalances arm C and cap holding them in a proper position to close upon the mold m when the arms B and C are brought together. Four rods fu o u o extend from the upper to the lower journal boxes i t' z'. c', passing through the boxes. They are secured by nuts above and below each box. These rods e 'U o o sustain the strain of the press.
At the side of arm B stands the vibrating feed arm Z22 hinged at d2, that the hopper b2 may vibrate on and oft1 the mold m. The dimensions of the hopper b2 correspond with the mold m except in height, it being high enough to hold material for two or more bricks. At the bottom of hopper b2 is the slide cutoif c2. The hopper b2 is enlarged at top for the convenience of feeding.
The moving power is lever D which is secured to arbor 0, on which the short arm Z is also secured. The rod K connects the arm Z and the top of the mold m.
To work the machine the hopper 2 is filled and brought over the mold m, when the attendant draws the slide cutoff c2, which allows the material to pass into the mold m. Replacing the slide c2 the material is divided even with the top of the mold. m, retaining all above the slide c2 in the hop per. The hopper o2 vibrates from the mold m. With the lever D the arm B is brought forward and closes against the molding u on the underside of cap j, thereby locking the arms B and C firmly together. Thile the arms B and C are brought into line, the mold m` slides upon the head ci, compressing the block. The springs c e raise the mold m when the press is removed. Beversing the lever D the arms B and C are restored to their former position. The attendant steps upon lever g/ and discharges the block.
The advantage secured by this improvement is the reducing of the friction.
I am not confined to any particular form of mold. The one shown which forms the hollow block has been long known, and can be seen in Fosters patent dated July 22nd, 1856, also in Buoks patent dated Deer. 9, 1856. The toggle power also is I combined7 and operated substantially as decoinnion in most kinds of presses. Also the I scribed.
