My invention relates to a toy gun and particularly to a toy gun which is simple, short, and

Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the draw ing and in the specification to follow.
Toy guns which shoot and resemble rifles or the open end maybe closed by the finger until the gun and magazine are returned to their upn right position.
In the following specifications, I have set forth in detail one of the constructions which-embody the principles which underlie my invention. It is not intended that the precise details are stated to limit the scope of my invention but rather to illustrate a preferred form so that it may be more readily understood.
In the drawing, I have shown my gun comprising a stock l which is sawed out or forme'd to simulate a gun stock. The barrel 2 is glued or otherwise Secured into the conforming recess 3 of the stock which is provided with an opening 4 'around which the simulated trigger shield 5 terminates in the stop 6 against which the operator 'I strikes when it is retracted along the barrel and placed in the Shooting position. The retraction of the operator` by hand overcomes the tension of the rubber band spring or tension mem- -ber B, and upon release, the tension member moves the operator rapidly along the barrel and I carries the plunger 9 with it.
The barrel 2 is preferably provided throughout its length With a top groove ID in which the plunger 9 travels and into which the pellet or the guns used by soldiers have been ordinarily made' of metal, and due to this and the more complicated Construction, have been relatively high in cost and due to th scarcity of metal, are
not considered necessary, particularly in war time. I
My toy gun is constructed so that it can' be made of soft Wood and paper, or other plentiful cheap material. v e
It is so simple in Construction that a full sized gun can be sold for the boy interested in toy guns.
The pellets which the gun shoots from its repeater magazine may also be made of Wood or other light material, as well as the usual lead shot.
The operator may be released to slidably spring along the barrel without a trigger and is retracted by hand in much the same way as a pump gun.
The magazines may be pre-loaded, and an empty magazine can be replaced by a loaded magazine by inverting the gun and inserting the loaded magazine from below; the magazine may be a tube open at both ends, and in such case,

The plunger, which is Secured to the interior of the operator and when in its normal position, and until completely retracted,`lies under the magazine and thus prevents the shot from drop'- ping into the -top groove of the barrel. When the end |3 strikes the 'shot II it is carried in front of the plunger at high velocity along the groove lil and beyond the travel of the plunger and the end I4 of the barrel 2 to hit the target.
The base !5 is provided with the socket aperture l& into which the end IT of the magazine snugly yet removably fits. The base |5 is firmly Secured to the barrel by glue or otherwise, and coacts with the spring cover grip |8 to stop the travel of the operator which strikes the end |9 of the base and end 20 of the grip with a loud report, simulating the report of a rifie.
The grip !8 covers the front end 26 of the spring groove 22 and hides a part of the spring The interior of the operator is preferably a' free sliding fit around the barrel which guides it. The spring anchor 26 and the plunger 9 are preferably secured within the operator diametrically opposite to each other and the spring groove 22 and groove IO of the barrel are likewise diametrically opposite; the groove n being on top and the groove 22 on the bottom.
The operator preferably encircles the barrel and its interior may conform to the shape of the barrel, which may be cylindrical or octagonal, as shown in the cross sections, Figs. 6 and 7.
Knurls or grooves 28 may be provided on the outer surface of the operator and on the grip 18, and my toy gun may be decorated and colored to represent metal for the barrel and Walnut for the stock and operator and may other wise be decorated to make the gun attractive.
Magazine may be of paper, fiber, or a plastic tube.
In this, my disclosure, I have described in detail an embodiment of my invention for which I desire to secure Letters Patent. My invention is set forth in the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a toy gun, a stock and barrel secured to said stock, said barrel having a groove at the top and a groove under the barrel, and an operator slidable on and encircling said barrel, and tension means secured to said barrel in the groove under the barrel, said tension means having one end secured to the barrel and its other end secured to said operator to move said operator along said barrel in one direction and a grip secured to said barrel and covering a part of said tension means, a magazine base secured to said barrel covering a part of said top groove,
the end of said base and said grip stopping the travel of said operator.
2. In a toy gun, a stock and barrel secured to said stock, said barrel having a groove at the top and a groove under the barrel, and an operator slidable on and encircling said barrel, and tension means secured to said barrel in the groove under the barrel, said tension means having one end secured to the barrel and its other end secured to said operator to move said operator along said barrel in one direction and a grip secured to said barrel and covering a part of said tension means, a magazine base secured to said barrel covering a *part of said top groove, the end of said base and said grip stopping the travel of said operator, and a plunger secured to said operator slidable in said groove.
3. In attoy gun, a stock and barrel secured to said stock, said barrel having a groove at the top and a groove under the barrel, and an operator slidable on andencircling said barrel, and
tension means secured to said barrel in the' groove under the barrel, said tension means having one end secured to the barrel and its other end secured to said operator to move said operator along said barrel in one direction and a grip secured to said barrel and covering a part of said tension means, a magazine base secured to saidbarrel covering a part of said top groove, the end of said base and said grip stopping the travel of said operator, and a plunger secured to said operator slidable in said groove, and a magazine for shots detachably secured to said base and communicating with said top groove.
4. In a toy gun, a stock and barrel secured to said stock, said barrel having a groove at the top and a groove under the barrel, and an operator slidable on and encircling said barrel, and tension means secured to said barrel in the groove under the barrel, said tension means having one end secured to the barrel and its other end secured to said operator to move said operator along said barrel in one direction and a grip secured to said barrel and covering a part of said tension means, a magazine base secured to said barrel covering a part of said top groove, the end of said base and said grip stopping the travel of said operator, and a plunger secured to said operator slidable in said groove, and a magazine for shots detachably secured to said base and communicating with-said top groove, said plunger normally preventing said shots from entering said groove and permitting a single shot to enter said groove When retracted.
5. In a toy gun, a stock and barrel secured to said stock, said barrel having a groove at the top and a groove under the barrel, and an operator slidable on and encircling said barrel,
and tension means secured to said barrel in the groove under the barrel, said tension means having one end secured to the barrel and its other end secured to said operator to move said operator along said barrel in one direction and a grip secured to said barrel and covering a part of said tension means, a magazine base secured to said barrel covering a part of said top groove, the end of said base and said grip stopping the travel of said operator, and a plunger secured to said operator slidable in said groove, and a magazine for shots detachably secured to 'said base and communicating with said top groove, said plunger normally preventing said shots from entering said groove and permitting a single shot to enter said groove when retracted, said plunger propelling said shot along said groove by said tension means by releasing said operator when in its retracted position.
