The present invention relates to a display de-' vice, and particularly relates to a book holder.

The present invention is particularly applicable for holding large, heavy books containing advertising matter and the like which are used and examined by the'public, although it is not, of course, limited to such uses.

" The object of the invention is to provide a convenient holder for such books,'which will make themreadily usable.

" Another object is' to provide a book holder which will hold the book in an easily read and convenient position when in use, but which can be easily positioned in an out-of-the-way place when not in use.

Other objects will be apparent from the description.

' The invention will be best understood by referenceito the accompanying drawings wherein like'numerals refer. to like parts.

The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a central supporting member I, which in the form shown is arectangular tube. A book spine supporting member 2 is hingedly mounted on the supporting member I by means of hinges 3 and 3A. The top and bottom of the supporting member 2 are provided with turned over flanges 2A which are adapted to engage the topand bottom edges of the spine of a book. Two pairs of book holding arms 4,.4A and 5, 5A are hingedly mounted on support 2 by means of hinges 6. Each book holding arm is provided with upturned flanges I, to provide grooves 8 in which the top and bottom edges of the book covers are positioned. The flanges on the lower book holding arms 4A and 5A are also preferably provided with upwardly projecting members 9 which act as supports for the leaves of the book, this feature being especially desirable when a loose-leaf bound book is being used. Near the outer extremities of the arms 4 and IA there. is provided a locking rod IIlgwhich is permanently and securely fastened to the arms 4 and 4A, such as by -welding or other suitable means. The top ofthe rod I0 is provided with an eye II. Arms 5 and 5A are provided with a removable locking rod IUA, the top end of which is provided with a hooked portion I IA adapted to be inserted into the eye II when the book is closed, and to be turned in said eye securely locking the two halves together.

Hooks I2 are provided at the top and bottom of the central supporting member I, and are adapted to engage the eye members l3 mounted on the spine supporting member 2, to provide a means for locking the spine supporting member 2 to the central supporting member I.

Pivotally attached to the underside of the top of the central supporting member I by means of hinge pin I 4A is a supporting leg member I4, having brace retaining catch member I5 at the bottom for engaging the free end of the brace I6, also pivotally attached to the central supporting member I through the pivotal connection I6A. Members I4 and I6 are preferably of such length that when engaged the central supporting member makes an angle of 45 with the supporting surface.

For mounting the holder on a horizontal surface (Figs. I and II) a tongue member I1 is hingedly mounted on the bottom of the central supporting member I. The tongue member I1 is inserted in the slot formed by the channelled member I8 attached to the top of a plate I9 resting upon a table or other horizontal surface. Plate I9 may be fastened to the top of a table by screws, or equivalent means such as a friction surface, suction cup, etc.

For mounting the holder on a vertical surface (Fig. HI) there is provided a channelled bracket member 20 inwhich may be engaged the supporting leg member I4.

The operation of the device is as follows:

Assuming the holder is in the position shown in Fig. II the locking rod IDA is first removed and the book is inserted in the holder from the left hand side by sliding the edges of the book covers through the various flanges provided until the book is properly positioned and the top and bottom edges of the covers are engaged in the flanges I. The locking rod IIlA is then reinserted and it, together with the lockin rod I0, securely hold the covers in the cover supporting elements. The top and bottom edges of the spine of the book are also engaged in the spine-holding elements 2A. The pages of the book freely pass the edges of the flanges I. When the book is no longer being used the cover supporting members 4, 4A and 5, 5A, together with the book are rotated into a plane at right angles to that represented by the surface of the drawing. Hook IIA is then inserted in eye II and turned. securely locking the two sides together. The hooks I2 are then disengaged and the spine supporting member 2, together with thecover-supporting members and thebook are rotated 90 intothe position shown in Fig. I. The brace I6 is then disengaged from thecatchli and the.support-' ing leg l4 and brace l6 are folded against the underside of the central support I, after which the whole assembly is laid flat on the table. When the book is to be used-again the process is simply reversed, except of course, that it will not be removed from the holder.

When the device is mounted on a wall or other vertical surface the operation is essentially the same, except that the book lies flat against the wall in a vertical position when not in use, instead of in a horizontal position.

It will be readily seen that the device of the present invention provides a convenient means for displaying large and heavy display books of al i d he n. N i: 909 9 5 readily a sible and easy to use, but when not in use it can 'be "folde'djagainst the supporting surface in an inconspicuous manner. The device can be mounted in a statement place for use, but when not in use it is out of the way. In the past it has been customary to mount such books upon a specially built stand which whether resting on the floor or a counter always takes up a lot of room, whether thbook being used or not.

It will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. Changes in the form o'f'the variousp arts may be made, and equivalents of the specific elements shown may be employed. j' Having described the invention, what is claimed is;

1. In a device of the character described, an elongated central supporting 'member, an arm carrying member pivotally attached to said central supporting member to swing about an axis parallelto the longitudinal axisof the central supporting member,"arms pivotally attached at each side edge of said arm carrying member, and a supporting leg pivotally attached to said central supporting member.

2. In a book holding assembly a central supporting member, a book spine supporting member pivotally mounted onsaid central supporting member to swing about an axis parallel to I the longitudinal axis of the central supporting member, and'book cover supporting members pivotally mounted on said book spine supporting member.

3; Ina book holding assembly a central supporting member, a book spine supportin member pivotally mounted on said central supporting member to swing about an axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the central supporting member, book cover supporting members pivotally mounted on said book spine supporting member, and pivotally mounted means on said central supportingmember for removably mounting the assembly on a supporting surface.

4. 5. In a book holding assembly, a central supporting member, a book spine supporting member pivotally mounted on one edge of said central supporting member, and bookeover supporting arms pivotally-mounted. at each side edge of both the top and bottom oi said book spine supporting member adaptedto engage the top and bottom edges of the covers of a book;

7. In a book holding assembly, a central supporting member, a book spine supporting member pivotally attached at one side edge of said central supporting member, and book cover supporting arms pivotally mounted at each side edge of both the top and bottom of said book-spine, supporting member, said book supporting; arms having overturned flanges adapted to engage. the top and bottom edges of the covers oi a book.

8. The device of claim 6 in which the top and bottom of the spine supporting member is provided with overturned flanges for engaging the top and bottom respectively of a book spine.

9. In a book holding assembly, a central supporting member, a book spine supporting mem ber pivotally attached at one edge of said central supporting member, book cover supporting arms pivotally mounted at each, side edge of both the top and bottom of said book spine supporting member, each cover supporting arm being provided with an overturned flange adapted to engage the edge of a book cover, and meane on the lower bookcover supportingmembers for supporting the pages of a book.

10.
