sc1aims. (ci. 15-16) Y Y The present invention relates to suction cleaners and more particularly to a new and novel suction cleaner casing construction.
An object of the invention is'to provide a new and improved suction cleaner. Another object is to provide a built-up cleaner casing of stamped metal parts which are of improved design and permit economy of manufacture and assembly.
' Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from'the following description and the attached drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 isa longitudinal section along the line vI-I of Figure 2;
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the suction cleaner partly in section;
Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of part of the fan casing section; f
Figure 4 is an exploded view oi the casing parts prior to assembly, and
Figure 5 is a section along the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
The embodiment of the invention herein disclosed comprises a suction cleaner having a body or casing III formed from a plurality `of metal stampings identified generally as a shell II, fan casing section I2, base I3 and brush roll housing I4. The base I3 is formed from a metal blank stamped to provide a nozzle I5 having a front wall I6, opposite end walls II, AI1 and a top wall I6, the latter being provided with an upwardly extending arcuate wall I6 to define with the front wall I6 extends rearwardly from the nozzle I5 to the rear end of the cleaner to forml spaced' aprons 2|, 2Ibetween which'is a depressed wall 22 deiining a recess 23 for a motor, the aprons 2|, 2l and depressed wall 22 merging at the rear end of the base and terminating in a depending skirt 24 which extends from the rear of the cleaner body along both sides of the latter to the nozzle end walls I1, I1.. An opening 25 is provided between the depressed wall 22 and the arcuate wall I3 for the accommodation of the' fan casing section I2.
A brush roll housing I4 is also formed from a metal blank stamped to provide a front 'wall 33, top wall 34, end walls 3l, 35 and a rear wall 36, such walls lying adjacent the nozzle walls of the base I3. An openim 3l is formed in the top wall 34 by a neck section 33 which extends a slight distance into the arcuate wall I3 and contacts the inner surfaces of -the latter and the iront wall I6 to form an air-tight seal therebetween and thus provide a suction air passage- Way 33. The housing I4 and base I3 may be spot welded together at available places and a marginal flange 40 at the nozzle mouth is bent over a cooperating marginal flange 4I on the base I3. The front and rear nozzle lips 42 and 43 on the suction` nozzle mouth are formed by a stamped metal frame removably mounted on the housing I4 by means of a marginal flange 44 which seats about ythe crimped marginal edge of the housing 4 I4, and a lip 45 is removably supported on a pin or pins 46 mounted on the rear wall 36 of the housing I4. A plate "41 covers the converter opening 20 and is removably secured to the cleaner body by means of spring clips 43, 43 one of which ,engages a flange 43 on the larcuate wall I9 and the other projects through an opening in the front walls I6 'and 33.
A pair of metal stampings 50 and 5I cooperate to'form the fan casing section I2 and an exhaust passageway 52; The stamping 50 includes a front wall 53 provided with a fan eye 54`and a peripheral wall 56 which terminates in a marginal iiange 5'I, and a part 58 of the peripheral' 52. When the'fan casing section I2 is completedv it is inserted in the opening 25 in the base I3 until it rests upony the edges of the v opening 25 and thereafter it is spot welded to the base I3 and tothe rear wall 36 of the housing I4. Inorder to complete the fan casing and provide a fan chamber 60, a stamped metal wall 6I is removably attached by nut and bolt connections to the marginal flange 51 of the fan casing section I2.
A bearing 63 is mounted in the fan casing wall 6I to support one end of'an armature shaft 64 of a motor enclosed in a housing which has a bearing 66 to support the other end of the armature shaft and the housing 65 is removably mounted on the fan casing wall 6I by screws y 68. Supported on the armature shaft 64 is a fan 'I0 disposed in the fan chamber 60 and at the extreme forward end of the armature shaft is a pulley 'II disposed in the suction passageway 39. A belt 'I2 extends from the pulley II` to a brush 13 rotatablymounted'in the end'walls 35, 35
of the housing u to rotate the brush into `contact with the surface being cleaned.
Mounted on the depressed wall 22 rearwardly of the motor housing 65 is a handl'e bracket ,15
.which pivotally supports the handle 16. Formed casing which project above the base I3 are en-` 'closed by the stamped steel shell `II which has a cut-o section 83 to span the exhaust passageway 52 and has its marginal edge resting on the apron 2i and the top wall I8 of the base I3. The forward end 85 of the shell II is spaced from the arcuate wall I3 of the base I3 to provide an opening 8B for the escape of light rays from an electric lamp 81 mounted in a bracket 33 supported on the shell Il. The shell is removably mounted on the base I3 by means of pins 33 on the handle bracket 'I5 and which extend through openings in the rea'r. wall 30 of the shell II while the front end of the shell is secured to the basei3 by means of` unshown screws. A furniture guard 93 is removably mounted on the upper front wall of the shell I I.
In assembling the parts, the housing I4 is inserted in the nozzle section I5 of the base I3 and spot welded thereto and the marginal edge 4|) crimped over the marginal edge 4I of the nozzle section I 5. The fan casing section I2 is then placed in the opening in the'base I3 and spot welded to the latter and to the rear wall 36 of the housing Il. Thereafter the motor and the fan casing wall 6I are placed as a unit in the recess 25 and moved forwardly to place the motor pulley 'II and fan 10 in-their proper positions and the fan casing wall 6I is then bolted to the marginal edge 51 of the fan casing section I2. The handle 'I6 is pivotally mounted on the bracket 15, and the ,shell I I is attached by placing the end wall 90 over the pins 39 and thenv the forward end of the shell is moved downwardly into contact with the base I3 to which it is rigidly secured by unshown screws.
