FLOWER-POT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,516, dated December 14, 1880. Application led March 15, 1880. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. CONWAY, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas, and in the State ot' Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flower-Pots; and I do hereby declare that the following-is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specilication.

My invention relates to self-waterin g owerpots, and it consists in certain peculiarities C, supported upon ledges a ai,

of construction, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to -the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of a rectangular liower-pot embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of parts thereof. Fig. 4 is a central vertical sec- ,tion of a round iiower-pot embodying my invention. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the i interior devices of this ower-pot.

A represents a rectangular box, of any suitable dimensions,supported upon a stand, B, made ot' twisted wire or any other suitable material.

Within the boxA is aremovable bottom, as shown, and forming below the saine a water-chamber, D, into which water may be admitted through the inlet E, said inlet having a screw-cap or other suitable devicefor closing the same, so

that the water will not evaporate outside of the box.

At each end of the removable bottom C is a slot or opening, b, andv between these end openings are similar slots or openings at any desired intervals. In each slot or opening thus formed in the bottom C is inserted a cage or box,-F, made of perforated sheet metal, and provided either with side or end anges, d, to rest upon the bottom and support the cages hanging down below the bottom into the Waterchamber.

In each of the cages F is placed a sponge or other capillary material, G, which extends upward a suitable distance above theJ bottom,

and over the same is placed a triangular hood or chamber, H, which has on each side a series of horizontal-that is, longitudinal-slots, it', the metal h being left at the top to overhang the opening, so as to protect the same and prevent the dirt from entering.

On the inner sides ofthe boxA are inclined guidesve, over which the hoods or chambers H are placed to be held in proper position.

Between the slots b in the bottoni C are perforations ff, as shown, to forni outlets for the evaporation of the Water in addition to that drawn up by capillary attraction by the sponges G.

In the sides of the box A are perforations y, passing in at the ends of and underneath the chambers H, for the admission of air to aid in the eva-poration of the water as it is drawn up by the capillaries.

It will be noticed that all the various partsviz., bottom, cages, or boxes, and the hoods or chambers-are all separable from each other, and can be easily detached for cleansing or other purposes. This is however the case only in comparatively large flower-pots.

In smaller onesround or otherwise-or hanging-baskets, I make the cage or box F and the chamber H in one continuous chamber or case, andthe bottom is perforated and attached permanently to the cage, so that the Wholeinterior structure can be lifted out when desired. This construction I have shown in Figs. 4 and 5.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A flower-pot consisting of an exterior chamber or box, A, having perforations y in its sides, the removable perforated and slotted bottom C, the hanging-cages F, containing the capillary material, and the removable evaporating-chambers H, provided with slots t and overhanging lips h, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth` 'In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this th day of February, A.
