This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a cigarete removing device for a package of cigarettes.

More specifically, the invention contemplates using a flexible strip of material formed and arranged in a certain way in combination with one of the cigarettes of a cigarettes package or other similar article by which the cigarette or other article may be easily removed.

The other similar articles referred to above may also comprise sticks of chewing gum and certain types of candies, and other similar articles.

The invention contemplates numerous modified forms which distinguish from each other in the number of said flexible strips used in accordance with the invention, and in other ways. It is proposed that one or more of the cigarettes of a cigarette package or other articles of similar packages, be provided with a strip in accordance with this invention to facilitate the removal thereof.

It should be noted that it is a customary practice to tear away the top wrapper of a cigarette package and then to strike the back of the package, or in some other manner attempt to project one or several of the cigarettes, which may'then be" removed; This invention facilitates the removal of the first or additional cigarettes without difiiculty.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, referencewill be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which'the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The cigarette removing device for a package of cigarettes, in accordance with this invention, includes a strip offlexible material l5 having a broad end portion l6 which continues into a gradually narrowing portion I! which in turn continues-into a narrow end portion l 8.- The said broad end portion I6 and the narrowing portion l is wound around the bottom portion ofa cigarette, such as the cigarette l9.- fIhe said narrow end portion 18 and the narrowing portion ll engage through a slot 2|) extending longitudinally of and formed in said broad end portion ltso as to lasso and grip the cigarette i9.

The said narrowing portion I! at the line where it passes throughthe slot 20 is bent laterally backwards along the line indicated by the dot and dash line 2fl'in Fig. 4 so as to have a laterally backwardly extending portion 2i (see Fig. 3). The narrow-end portion I8 is bent obliquely upon an oblique line, suchas indicated in Fig. 4 by-the dot and'dash lines 22, so as'to extend upwards along-the cigarettelil. An extension strip 23 is pasted -to the narrow end portion l8 and normally projects above the-topend of the cigarette la Thisextension portion 23 is preferablyof a vivid colon-such as red. The flexiblestrip l5 may be formed of paper or'other sheet material. 'j"

In Fig. 1 a standard package of cigarettesi l is illustrated in which; the'top corner oi-the wrapper is torn away-to form an'opening 25. The top ends of some of-the-ciarettes Hi are visible through this openingand the extension strip 23 is also accessible. The. extension strip 23 may be gripped and pulled-forwards.- as indicated by the arrow 26, and this action projects the cigarette [9. In Fig. 1 the cigarette is shown slightly projected after the extension strip 23 was pulled a short way.

The feature of this invention resides in the fact that the cigarette package may be opened by tearing the wrapping at the top, in the usual way and then one of the cigarettes may be pulled up and removedsimply by gripping and pulling the extension strip 23. It should be noted that the slot 20' is offset towards the bottom edge of the broad end \portion 16 so as to guide the narrowing portion ll around the bottom end of the cigarette to better grip it.

In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 5 to 7 the removing device includes a transverse slot 25 formed in the narrowing portion l1 and adapted to engage about a cigarette in the identical way as previously described, except for the fact that the slot 25 is placed across the bottom edge of the cigarette IS. The small area H of the narrowing portion ll beneath the slot 25* is bent under the bottom of the cigarette so as to better grip the cigarette. In other respects this form of the invention is identical to the previous form and like parts are indicated by identical reference numerals.

In Fig. 8 another embodiment of the invention is disclosed in which the cigarette package 24 is provided with a cigarette removing device having projecting extension strips 23 located at both ends of the top of the package. With this arrangement either end of the: top of the package may be removed'for disclosing one of the removing devices which then may beoperated, as previously stated.

In Figs. 9 and 10 another form of the invention is disclosed in which the removing device comprises a flexible strip having a broad bottom end portion 26 engaged around in cylindrical fashion about a bottom section of the cigarette I9 and secured thereto with adhesive material 21. The flexible strip is also provided with a narrow longitudinally extending section 28 which extends upwards past the top end of the cigarette l9 and is adapted to be gripped for pulling the cigarette upwards.

In Fig. 11 still another embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in which the cigarette package 24 is illustrated with a torn away top section leaving an opening 25 through which cigarettes are viewable. The two corner cigarettes are illustrated provided with removing devices having the extension strips '23 projecting therefrom by which these cigarettes may be removed.

In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that previouslyshown and like reference numerals identify like parts in each of the several views. r

In Figs. 12 to 14 another embodiment of the in vention is disclosed in which a package of chewing gum 24' or other candy or article is shown having an end of the package torn away forming an opening 25' disclosing the ends of the articles therein. One of these articles is provided with a removing device which consists essentially of a strip of flexible material l5 having a broad end portion I6 which gradually narrows and continues into a narrow end portion 18'. The broad portion 16' is provided with a slot 20' through which the narrow portion I8 is engaged. This narrow portion [8' is bent laterally backwards and obliquely longitudinally upwards substantially in the same way as the first disclosed form of the invention. This removing device is illustrated engaging one of the sticks of gum l9 of the pack age, by which this stick may be easily removed.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. In combination with a cigarette of a package of cigarettes, or other similar articles, a strip of flexible material having a broad end portion which gradually narrows and continues into a narrow end portion, said broad end portion being wound around the bottom portion of said cigarette or other similar article and said narrow end portion engaging through a slot extending longitudinally in said broad end portion for lassoing and gripping said article, and said narrow end portion being bent laterally back and obliquely longitudinally of said wound around portion and extending upwards to the top of said article.

2. In combination with a cigarette of a package of cigarettes, or other similar articles, a strip of flexible material having a broad end portion which gradually narrows and continues into a narrow end portion, said broad end portion being wound around the bottom portion of said cigarette or other similar article and said narrow end portion engaging through a slot extending longitudinally in said broad end portion for lassoing and gripping said article, and said narrow end portion being bent laterally back and obliquely longitudinally of said wound around portion and extending upwards to the top of said article and an extension strip attached to and projecting from said narrow end portion.

In combination with a cigarette of a pack age of cigarettes, or other similar articles, a strip of flexible material having a broad end por tion which gradually narrows and continues into" a narrow end portion, said broad end portion being wound around the bottom portion of said cigarette or other similar article and said narrow end portion engaging through a slot extending longitudinally in said broad end portion for lassoing and gripping said article, and said narrow end portion being bent laterally back and obliquely longitudinally of said wound around portion and extending upwards to the top of said article, and an extension strip attached to and projecting from said narrow end portion, said extension strip being of a bright color.

In combination with a cigarette of a package of cigarettes, or other similar articles, a strip of flexible material having a broad end portion which gradually narrows and continues into-a narrow end portion, said broad end portion being Wound around the bottom portion of said-cigarette or other similar article and said narrow end portion engaging through a slot extending longitudinally in said broad end portion" for lassoing and gripping said article, and said narrow end portion being bent laterally back and obliquely longitudinally of said wound around portion-and extending upwards to the top of said article, and another strip of flexible material identical to the one just described but engaged about another cigarette in said package.

5. In combination with a cigarette of a package of cigarettes, or other similar articlespa strip of flexible material having a broad end portion which gradually narrows and continues into a narrow end portion, said broad end portion being wound around the bottom portion of said cigarette or other similar article and narrow end portion engaging through a slot extending longitudinally in said broad end portion for lassoinf, and gripping said article, and said narrow end portion being bent laterally back and obliquely longitudinally of said wound around portion and extending upwards to the top of said article, and another strip of flexible material identical to the one just described but engaged about another cigarette in said package, said cigarette engaged by the strips of flexible material being at different ends of the package.

6. In combination with a cigarette of a package of cigarettes, or other similar articles, a strip of flexible material having a broad end por-- tion which gradually narrows and continues into a narrow end portion, said broad end portion being wound around the bottom portion of said cigarette or other similar article and said narrow end portion engaging through a slot extending longitudinally in said broad end portion for lassoing and gripping said article, and said narrow end portion being bent laterally back and obliquely longitudinally of said wound around portion and extending upwards to the top of said article, and said narrowing portion being provided with a transversely engaged slot adapted to be engaged by the bottom edge of the cigarette.

7. In combination with a cigarette of a package of cigarettes, or other similar articles, a strip of flexible material having a broad end portion which gradually narrows and continues into a narrow end portion, said broad end portion being wound around the bottom portion of said cigarette or other similar article and said narrow end portion engaging through a slot extending longitudinally in said broad end portion for lassoing and gripping said article, and said narrow end portion being bent laterally back and ob liquely longitudinally of said wound around por tion and extending upwards to the top of said article, and said narrowing portion being pro vided with a transversely engaged slot adapted to be engaged by the bottom edge of the cigarette, and the material of the flexible strip beneath said last engaged slot being forced under the bottom end of the cigarette.

8. In combination with an article of a package of identical articles, a strip of flexible ma terial having a broad end portion which gradually narrows and continues into a narrow end portion, said broad end portion being wound around the bottom portion of said article, and said narrow end portion engaging through a slot extending longitudinally of and in said broad end portion for lassoing and gripping said article, and said narrow portion being bent laterally back and obliquely longitudinally of said wound around por ticn and extending upwards to the top of said article.
