One specific use to which the invention has been specifically adapted is for the grindinglof the peripheral edges of circular plates of glass in the manufacture of mirrors and other articles formed from glass plates circular in form;. V
It is one object of the invention toprovide a machine which will operate simultaneously on more than two articles. .2 It is a further object of the invention; to provide a device'which may be employed in connec ticn with a grinding wheel of the type commonly. g
employed for finishing the edges of rectangular plates of glass. r
. It is a still further object of the invention so to construct the machine that the time required: to produce the finished edge upon the article being treatedmay be considerably reduced as compared with machines at .presentin use with which I am familiar. p

The construction just described is illustrated in detail in Figure 4, the roller 33 :being secured to the reduced extension 35 of the shaft3ll by means of a nut 35'.
The frame 21 heretofore mentioned, is provided in its left hand end with a bearing 36 which receives the shaft 30, and this construction forms the means by which the frame '21 may be pivotally mounted within the frame 50 as best illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.

To position the plates it will be understood that the foot treadle 45 is released to permit of the lifting of the frame 50'to place the plates upon the rollers 33 and 39.
After the plates have been positioned, the
frame 50 is lowered to the point where its roller 64 will engage the plates, after which the foot treadle is depressed to place the spring 42 under suflicient tension to move the edges of the plates into position within their respective grooves in the peripheral edge of the grinding wheel 2| in grinding contact with said grinding wheel.
In the preferred form of the invention, the grinding wheel would be continuously operating in the direction indicated by the arrow B. The belt 80, heretofore mentioned, is driven by means of a pulley 8| carried upon a shaft 82 to which is connected a gear 83 which meshes with a. driving gear 84 carried by'the shaft'25 of the motor, and thus it willbe seen thatthe belt will be driven in the direction of the arrow C, operating the driving pulley 3|, the shaft 30 and the roller 33. which constitutes a driving roller for the plates, driving them in a direction opposite to that of the rotation of the grinding wheel 21.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the frame by reason o-f the fact'that it is pivotally mounted upon the shaft 30 and the fact that the springs H tend to move the frame away from the grinding wheel and the spring 42 tends to overcome the tension of the springs H maintaining the plates A in engagement with the grind ing wheel, the several plates are yieldingly mounted with respect to the grinding wheel, and are yieldingly supported by the rollers 33 and 39 and held yieldingly in engagement with said supporting rollers 33and 33 by the roller 64..

In a machine for grinding the peripheral edge of a circular plate, a rotating grinding wheel, means for rotating the grinding wheel, a frame, a fixed position plate supporting and driving roller carried by the frame, a lever pivotally mounted on said frame, a plate supporting roller carried by the lever, said rollers having engagement with the peripheral edge of a circular plate to be ground at spaced points upon one side of the center of said plate, means tending normally to move the pivoted lever in a direction away from the grinding element thereby to move the peripheral edge of a plate to be ground out of grinding contact with the grinding element, meansfor rotating the supporting and driving roller thereby to rotate the plate, and means for applying a yielding pressure to the plate to retain its peripheral edge in grinding contact with the grinding element.

a fixed position plate supporting-and driving roller carried by the frame, a leverpivotally mounted on said frame, a plate supporting roller carried by the lever, said rollers having engagement with the peripheral edge of a circularplate :to be ground at-spaced points upon one side of the center of said plate, means tending normally to move the pivoted lever in a direction away from the, grinding element thereby to; move the peripheral edge of a plate to be ground out of grinding contact with the grinding element, means for rotating the supporting and driving roller thereby to rotate the plate, and means for applying a yielding pressure to the plate to retain its peripheral edge in grinding contact with the grinding element, said last mentioned means including a roller having engagement with the peripheraledge of the plate being ground at a point upon the opposite side of, the center of the plate from those points of engagement of said plate by the supporting and driving roller and the said supporting roller, and means for apply ing pressure to said pressure roller. In a machine for grinding the peripheral edge of a circular plate, a grinding element, a driving roller having engagement with the peripheral edge of a circular plate to be ground, a supporting roller having engagement withthe peripheral edge of said plate, a pressure roller engaging the peripheral edge of said circular plate and ,in grinding contact with the grinding element, means for exertingvpressure upon said pressure roller, and means for driving the drive ing roller. l
