MELVIN'- M; MORSE AND M. v. COLLINS, Ori"v BUFFALO; 'NEW YORK.,
Letters .Patent No. 79,246,- dateal June 23, 186.8.
IMPROVBMBNTIN .ssnARs-SHARPNBRS,
TO` ALL WHOM IT'MAY QONCERN: p I
Beit known that we, MELvIN M. Monsn and M. V. COLLINS, ot the city of Bntalofin thecounty of Erie, and State of New'York, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in' Shears-Sharpening Machines; and we do hereby declare thatthe following isa full and exacdescription thereof, reference beingl had to the accompanying drawings'L making a part of this specification, in whichi a 'Figurelisa side elevation,
Figure II is a plan thereof, and y A v l `VFigure III is aver-tical section ofV the sleeve, -showing thelspring which renders the pressurejroller selfadjustable. o
Like letters of'reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
The invention consists- First, of an adjustable gauge-plate, provided with suitable st ops, against which .the blade of the shears is applied,` and thereby enabled to be more easily held and .uniformly sharpened bythe action of the grinding-wheel so which it is subjected.
Second, a self-adjustable pressureroller,.used in combination with said gauge-plate, forthe purpose of keeping the blade of the shears in proper contactwith the gauge-plate, while it readily permits requisite movement of the blade backend forth while being sharpened. I
Third,.the combinatiouand arrangement of a spring, to press against the back of the blade, and keep it in proper 'contact-with. the emeryor other wheel. l A f In the drawings, A is any suitable bed-plate or frame, for-supporting the parts, in vhich is mounted an emery or other suitable grinding-wheel, B, preferably provided `with' a pulley, c, by which motion may be imparted to the wheel by means of a treadle. D is a. gaugeplate,v`arranged oir top of the frame, with a-suitable notch or recess to receive the edge of the emery-wheeh e e `are two guide-pins or stops, on each side of this recess, in line parallel 'with the face'of the wheel B, against which the edge of theblade ofthe shears is held in grinding iti F is avpressure-roller, mounted in suitable bearings, with a vertical shaft fitting in a sleeve, g, in the end of an arm, G, secured'tothe gauge-plate. Within the sleeve is a spiral spring, s, (shown in Fig. IIL) vvhich operatesto keep'the roller pr ssed down upon the gauge-plate, and also to render it self-adjustable.-
The blade of the shears to besharpenedis inserted underthe roller, with the edge'against the stops ee. `A. spring,-h', constructed and arranged-inl any suitablemanner to press against the back of the blade and keep it engaged with thegrinding-wheel, lis employed, asiclearlyrepresented;
The gauge-plate may b e secured'to the bed-plate er frame by dove-tailslides, or other suitableconnections that will permit vits adjustment to and from the nvheel.y p
This adjustment is accomplished byxneans'ot`- a thumb-screw, z', passing through a dang-ev from lthe gauge; plate, and screwing into a nut in theframe beneath. By means of this screw the gauge-plate is so adjustedthait the edge of the blade, when arrangedagainst the stops e, will also be in .Contact with the grinding-wheel, the stopsoperatingto prevent an-undue grinding away of the edge.
The blades of the instrument to be sharpened are successively placed on the'guide-plate, under the pressurei roller,`a s before described, and\ moved back and forth against `the gauge-stops, which keep the edge parallel with theface of the wheel, and insure the sharpening of the instrument in a uniform and rapid manner.
The arrangement of the bed-plate a little above the centre\of -the ivhecl causes the action'of the latter to Vimpart-tro .the edge the required bevel. I v
' The bed-plate maybe provided with a set-screw, andbe constructed to permit the ready attachment of the` instrument tothe table of. a sewing-machine, the emery-wheel in that casebeing operated by the mechanism ofy "the sewingfmechine, withwhich the pulley c may be connected `in any suitable-manner..
What ne claim.sieur-invention,` anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, isf- Al. The adjustable gauge-plate D, provided with stops e e, arranged and operating with the. grinding-wheel B, substantially as set forth.. y 2. Incombinatio therewith, the self-adjusting pressure-miler F, substantizilly inv the manner. sind for 'the pmr'posev set forth. v i
v3. The spring li, arranged-with a. pressure-roller, F, and gauge-stops e, substantially as :mhd for the purpose specified. y
