' f4 Claims. (o1. 12o-9o.)
This invention relates toa sharpening device for a tailors crayon or chalk.
My invention: contemplates 'the provision .of
a device by meansof which the .crayon or chalk,J
such as that used by cloth cutters and tailors to mark the. fabric .or clothupon which they operate, may be sharpened to provide the` fine knife-like edge required in such work.y i
Due to the composition of the crayon or chalk, when the edge thereof is shaved and thereby sharpened, the particles of shavings have a tend- .ency'to pack. and adhere to the cutting means such as that heretofore used, necessitating frequent cleaning by the tailoror cutter. My in- .vention contemplates theprovision of a sharpeningvdevice, for such crayon or V,chalk which is self-cleaning andwhich may be sov arranged so that the'shavings may-beaccumulated in-the means supporting or carrying ithe sharpening members -for later disposal therefrom.
My invention still further contemplates the arrangement of such a shaving device having a sharpening means and as a plane-like knife edge. i
arranged and constructedso that it will not` become clogged and thereby rendered inoperative to formon'the -crayon or chalk the sought for knife-like markingedge. Y
Other objects and advantages of my inventionA will be clear from the description which follows and the vdrawing relating thereto, in Which: y L
.Fig. 1 isa top plan view of a: sharpening device according to my invention. s
'Fig-.12. is a section on-theline 2-2of Fig. 1. .Fig r3 isa-.section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vsideelevation of the sharpening memberyassembly. removed from the carrying tray. .Y f f v .l
g Fig. 5 isa perspective view of a conventional crayonv or chalk, which may be sharpened with4 'af-device according tomy invention.
Referringnow t0 .the drawing and particularly to Figs. l to 4 inclusive, thecutter or sharpening member assembly I0 may be, removably carried in the bed I2,;the frame end walls I3 and side walls I5, of which'extend up from the bote.
tom I4 of the tray I6 in the center thereof and in which 'bed the; assembly I0 fits relatively snugly.
The assembly I0 comprises two similar members for carrying the plane-like knives I8, which extend through the slots 20 arranged in the upper inclined portions 22, extending upwardly from the straight lower portion 24 of the assembly member.
oblong rectangular' plate, vthe elongated marking f edges 32 of which'have been sharpened acutexangle, V-shaped in `cross section.'V
'Ihe cutting edges 34 of the knives ISeXtend through the slots 20 beyondthe inner surfaces of the inclined upper portions `22 in to the guide'- way or ,groove 28, a distance sui'icient` to shave or sharpen the edge 32 into section sought orselected. L
The knives I8 aresecured for removal 'therefrom, in the event lit isdesired tofsharpen the cutting edges thereof, to the upperinclined portions `22 byv any suitable means,'preferably for" selective ,positioning inthe device, as bythe screw 36, the threads of-Whichengage the core'4 In order to permit the, cutting edge 34 toV be selectively po..
respondingly rthreaded groove '38.
sitioned in the guideway or groove 28, preferablyv I provide the elongated slot 40 in the body of Vthe knife I8, in which slot the screw 36 passes.` to enable the knife to be secured on the *portionf 22 .iln`thedesired position.
In ordertodene the entrance 42 tothe guide-4: way ork groove 28 so1that-the crayon or chalk 1 30 will be'advanced therein Jin the proper-'diey rection against the cutting edges 34, I prefer- `v ably cutaway the upper portions 22 adjacent the entrancethereto asv indicated at-42. This cutaway part preferably. terminates just in advance of the slot 20 and cutting edge 34 and'` additionally serves to somewhat relieve any rei sistance, frictional or otherwise,` tothe passageI of the crayon or chalk along'lthe guideway or groove, since the knives, by reason' of this, begin-fAV to shave the crayon orchalk'almostimmediately upon its entrance into that part vof the''guilewaygg4 which is surrounded by the walls forming it.
As the lcrayon or chalk 30 is moved through the guideway or groove 28, the cutting edges 34 of the plane-like knives I8 bite into it to shave off the edges thereof. Since the guideway or groove is V-shaped in cross section and the cutting edges of the sharpening means thereinto an the angular crossv j by correspondingly inclined, an angular knifelike marking edge is formed on the crayon or Chalk.
The cuttings or shavings are directed by the preferably beveled knife edge 34 through the slot 20 to accumulate on each side of the cutter assembly bed l2 in the interior or chamber 44, formed by the upstanding end walls 46 and side walls 48 of the tray VIii.Y It willbe apparent that by reason of this construction just described, the sharpening device is substantially self-cleaning, since the shavings or cuttings will necessarily fall through the slots away from the cutting edges and provision being made for the accumulation of the cuttings or shavings, as they are made, in a tray or support in whichthe sharpening member is carried.
Since the cutter assembly l is snugly but removably carried in the bed l2 of the tray I6, it will be recognized that the sharpening device may beused as.` a separate implement, if so desired.
While I' have illustrated and described a-certain embodiment ofv myr invention,.I do not intend to be limited to the specific details; of construction shown, but intend to. claim myinvention as:broad1y.v as. the priorartl and .thelscope of the appended'claims permit. f
