HANDBAG Filed June 24. 1942 4 TTOF/VE Y Patented June 13, 1944 HANDBAG Anthony Iinmordino, Deer Park, N. Y.
Application June 24, 1942, Serial No. 448,249
4 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful immovements in a handbag.
More specifically, the invention proposes the construction of a handbag entirely of cloth material and having a back face sheet and a front face sheet and an open top provided with a novel closure means arranged to close the open top.
A further object proposes to characterize the closure meanslby an upwardly directed single flap extending from the top of one of the face sheets and an upwardly directed multiple flap extending from the top of the other of the face sheets with fasteners between the adjacent faces of the flaps for attaching the flaps together in a manner to close the top of the handbag.
Itis a further object of this invention to construct the upwardly directed multiple fiap in such a manner that it is capable of being expanded without interfering with the operation of the closure fasteners in a manner to increase the carrying capacity of the handbag.
Another object of this invention proposes connecting together the sides of the face sheets by inwardly directed gussets and to provide stitches for pinching together and holding the top adjacent side portions of the base sheets in a manner to reduce the size of the top opening and prevent articles from dropping out of the corners of the top of the handbag in the closed condition thereof.
A still further object of the invention proposes the provision of a means for holding the expandible multiple flap in a contracted position in a manner to reduce the overall size of the handbag when so desired.
The invention further proposes the construction of a handbag which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of this invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a handbag constructed in accordance with a modification of I this invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view of Fig. I with the handbag in a closed condition.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 'l.
Fig. 4 is a partial horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to a portion of Fig. 2 but illustrating the top of the handbag in an open condition.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of a handbag constructed in accordance with a modification of this invention.
Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 6.
The handbag, according to this invention, is preferably constructed entirely of cloth material but may also be constructed of leather or any other similar soft flexible material. The handbag includes a front face sheet I0 and back face sheet H with the bottom edges of said face sheets being connected together. The front face sheet is constructed of adjacent pieces of material H) and Ill stitched together along an arcuate vertical line I 2. The attached edge of the piece of material 10 is preferably shirred before being stitched in position. This is done merely to enhance the appearance of the front of the bag and the front face sheet It] could be made of a single piece of material and provided with any other form of decoration.
The connection between the bottom edges of the face sheets I 0 and H comprises a strip of cloth material l3 inserted between the bottom edges of the face sheets and secured in position by lines of stitches M. The ends of the strip of cloth material continue into upwardly extended inwardly directed gussets [5 which have their edges "secured in position between the sides of the face sheets l0 and II by a continuation of the lines of stitches I 4. Stitches l6 pinch together and hold the top adjacent side portions of the front and back face sheets to restrict the size of the top opening and prevent articles from dropping out of the corners of the handbag in its closed condition which will become clear as this specification continues. 7
An upwardly extending single flap l1 continues from the top edge of one of the face sheets, preferably the front face sheet l0 and extends beyond the open top ofthe handbag. The flap I] is double layer construction with the frontlayer I 8 comprising a continuation of the front face sheet If] and having a back layer 19 secured thereto by stitches 20. The bottom edge of the back layer l9 stops slightly inwards of the open top of the handbag.
An upwardly extending multiple flap 2| continues from the top edge of the other face sheets,
"preferably the back face sheet I I and also extends beyond the open top of the handbag. The flap 21 is of double layer construction with the outer exposed layer 22 comprising a continuation of the back face sheet I 1. The exposed layer 22 is backed by an inner layer 23 which is secured in position by a line of stitches 24.
The multiple flap 21 comprises an upwardly extending panel 21 which continues into a downwardly extending panel 21 The downwardly extending panel 21 then continues into an upwardly extending panel 21. The sides of the upwardly extending panel 21 and the downwardly extending panel 2| are secured together. at their ends by means of the stitches 24 used for securing together the layers 22 and 23 of the" flap 21. All of the panels of the fiap 21 have upwardly inclined ends.
The upwardly directed panel 21 of the flap 21 is located adjacent the flap 11 and means is provided for connecting the fiap 1! and the panel 21 together in face contact to close the open top of the handbag. I his means comprises snap fastener elements 25 mounted upon the flap l1 and engageable with complementary snap fastener elements 26 mounted upon the panel 21.
The interior of the handbag is provided with a lining 21 which has its top edges secured to the free bottom edges of the inner layers 19 and 23 of the flaps 1'! and 2| by means of lines of stitches 28.
It will be noted that the fasteners 25 and 26 act to properly close the open top of the handbag while the stitches 1 6 restrict the ends of the open top of the handbag sufiiciently to prevent articles from dropping from the corners of the handbag in the closed-condition thereof. Also, the panels making up the flap 2 1 are capable of stretching or more properly extending themselves to increase the capacity of the top portion of the handbag without interfering with the closing ability of the fasteners 25 and 26.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the construction of the handbag is similar to that previously described except for the provision of a means for securing together the adjacent faces of the panels N and 21 of the flap 21 to hold this flap in a-con-tr-acted condition and reduce the overall carrying capacity of the handbag when desired.
This securing means comprises snap fastener elements 29 mounted upon the panel 21' and which releasably engage with the complementary snap fastener elements 30 mounted upon the panel 21 In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that previously described and like reference numerals are used to identify like parts in all of the views.
It is to be understood that the handbag may be of any desired style, size and material. The handbag may have one or more pocket compartments with suitable gusset and cover flap portions.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to themecise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
