Description

June 13, 1944. A. J. MATTER PIPE BENDER Filed July 15, 1942 i atented June 13, 1944 PIPE BENDER Albert J. Matter, Park Ridge, 111., assignor to The Nye Tool & Machine Works, a corporation 01' Illinois Application July 15, 1942, Serial No. 450,983
1 Claim.
My invention relates to means whereby pipes may be bent into the desired bent condition while maintaining their circular cross section at the bends; this application being a continuation-inpart of my pending application for United States Letters Patent Serial No. 402,864, filed July 17, 1941, for Vise structures.
Certain of my objects are to provide improved and simple means for bending pipes; to provide a pipe-bender whereby the pipe bending operation may be facilitated and to provide for the desired bending of pipes of such great length that the production of the desired bends therein by a single, bending operation cannot be efiected, because of shallow head room, the common practice involving the positioning of the pipe in upwardly extending position in the pipe-bender provided on a substantially horizontal member, such as for example the platform of a vise equipped stand, or on a member for attachment to a bench or a post; and other objects as will be manifest from the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a bench showing it as equipped with a pipe-bender embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1; and
Figure 3, an enlarged sectional view taken at the line 3 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow.
In the particular illustrated embodiment of my invention, the pipe-bender is shown as provided as an attachment for a bench and is capable of bending pipes approximately to right angle condition, the bender attachment being represented at 4 and a bench, to which it is shown as attached, at 5, the bender presenting a substantially horizontal plate portion 6.
The pipe bending meansare provided on the plate portion 6 and comprise a curved channel 1 on the plate portion 6, of curved shape in crosssection and merging into the upper end of an opening 8 in the plate portion 6 having a substantially vertical back wall 9. The opposite wall it of the opening 8 is curved lengthwise and is provided as a continuation of the lengthwise curved bottom wall I l of the channel 1 and with the bottom wall H forms an arcuate surface against which the pipe is bent in the bending operation, the wall 9 of the socket having an opening l2 to receive the inner end of the pipe to be bent.
By the means just described a pipe, such as that represented at l3, to be bent to an angle approximating a right angle is bent to such condition by successive steps, first by placing the pipe in the channel I with its inner end extending through the opening l2 as shown by full lines in Fig. 3 and forming a wide angle bend by pulling down on the outer end of the pipe and then removing the bent pipe from the opening l2 and inserting it downwardly through the opening 8 to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3 and then sharpening the bend in the pipe as shown by the dotted lines, by pulling down on the outer end of the pipe.
By the use of such means, as will be evident, the bending of pipes in general may be facilitated and pipes which would be too long, because of shallow head room, to be bent to the desired sharp angle bends where the bends are produced in on operation, may be bent to the desired shape.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, showing it as embodied in an attachment for a bench, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit my invention to the particular embodiment shown as it may be variously modified and altered and the invention embodied in other forms without departing from the spirit of my invention. Furthermore, as will be understood the invention is not limited to embodiment in a bench attachment as it may be provided for use in other situations as for example it may be incorporated in a vise-stand in which, by way of example, the pipe bending features may be provided in the I platform of such a stand.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A supporting member having an opening, an arcuate portion over which to bend a pipe located at one side of said opening and means at the opposite side of said opening disposed at different elevations and in line with said arcuate portion for engagement in succession with the end of the pipe at which it is to be bent over said arcuate portion, whereby a pipe engaging said means at the higher elevation may be given an initial bend over said arcuate portion and when repositioned for engaging said means at the lower elevation may be given a greater bend over said arcuate portion.
